Re:Reasons You’re Hiring Too Junior
on Tuesday December 15, 2020 @07:44AM (#25429755)
When you’re a tiny startup budgets are extremely lean and products don’t have a lot of users. In that environment companies often prioritize breadth of functionality (see what works) and getting that via several (more affordable) junior team members guided by a smaller group of senior team members.

*"PRIVACY" IS LIKE "the environment" – it's about too many things to be useful, so everybody ends up trampling it for a host of petty reasons. Leading to a world that's degraded and hostile, and that would never have been chosen had the consequences been made clear.

Re:Sovereignty and ‘Sovereignty ’
on Friday December 11, 2020 @08:38AM (#25385547)
Sovereignty is important because it is the right of the people to elect their government, its laws, etc. This is a representation of a territory and it implies that the territory would be respected. Accordingly, sovereignty is a power, rather than a right.
Re:Why can't we automate data cleaning?
on Friday December 11, 2020 @08:36AM (#25385521)
It’s clear that data cleaning, like modelling, is not immune to automation. As a result, it’s likely that data scientists will find themselves leaning more and more into their subject matter expertise, communication and engineering skills in the future, rather than spending their time on dealing with missing values, hyperparameter optimization or model selection.

Re:How to Get People to Like You
on Thursday December 10, 2020 @09:31AM (#25374022)
Listen better.
I mentioned how talkers tend to be more likable, and that’s true. Sometimes, over-communicating puts people at ease. But it’s also important to pause once in a while and listen. Good communicators take a breath once in a while! Likable people are always listeners who are curious to (genuinely) learn new things. The best communicators talk and talk–and then listen for a response. That makes them an office favorite.

Re:Can developer productivity be measured?
on Thursday December 10, 2020 @09:04AM (#25373774)
Most software projects get managed with a ticketing system that logs the work to be done as individual tickets. Counting the number of cards a developer closes over a certain period allows us to see what actual work is getting closed off.
Measuring closed tickets is an excellent metric if the tasks are written well and assigned based on business priority. When more tickets get closed, more good things are happening with the project, be that bugs getting closed off or features made.

Re:Things Worth Knowing About Empathy
on Wednesday December 09, 2020 @10:28AM (#25359476)
Emotional empathy is good because it means that we can readily understand and feel other people's emotions. This is vital for those in caring professions, such as doctors and nurses, to be able to respond to their patients appropriately. It also means that we can respond to friends and others when they are distressed.

Re:The Art of Not Selling
on Tuesday December 08, 2020 @07:42AM (#25344395)
I agree on the long term Investment. The main reason to buy and hold stocks over the long-term is that long-term investments almost always outperform the market when investors try and time their investments. Emotional trading tends to hamper investor returns. Over most 20-year time periods, the S&P 500 has posted positive returns for investors.

One area where AIs can benefit from the brain is our knowledge of core concepts that relate to the physical world—spaces, numbers, objects, and so on.
Re:Listen to 35 Hours of Podcasts Every Week. Is That Bad?
on Monday December 07, 2020 @09:06AM (#25332170)
You’ll get more done and feel calmer if you save your podcasts for non-work hours. And next time you finish a good podcast, instead of rushing to the next one, take a pause. Reflect on what you learned, write down your thoughts about it, or simply enjoy the silence. Your brain and nervous system will appreciate the rest, and you’ll probably remember the podcast better tomorrow.

You need to choose a technology based on the problem you want to solve. Some things are better done in one language than another; for example, Java is great for large-scale projects with complex business logic and platform-independent code that has to run reliably.
