Re:What's Getting Pwned on Thursday October 22, 2026 @12:28PM (#50197610)
We might see a return of some viruses and worms patching out others so they can keep running, but with AI.
Re:Presented by Stripe on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @04:12PM (#50186962)
I didn't say I think he's about to retire. There are words after "retire from tech" that can't really be separated from my use of those words.
Re:Presented by Stripe on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @02:50PM (#50185722)
I figured he was angling for a buyout with jacking prices up and all but eliminating free stuff. Can't really blame him for wanting to retire from tech if that's his goal once the required "pretend I'm still in it" phase ends. Things are getting weird.
Re:Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @11:50AM (#50168223)
This seems like an arbitrary line with no reason to hold it. "Drone" refers to how it functions (remotely or autonomously), not how it moves.
Re:Making a 88x31 button book using ImageMagick on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @10:42AM (#50167197)
The promotion of "classic" literature is largely about exposing you to depictions of the lived experiences of others through history. You can probably find better sources for that these days. It doesn't have to be unbearable without going into it with a specific goal (like wading into muck to save a puppy), but it often is.

>> "The Creative Commons licenses I used since more than a decade (CC By for Pepper&Carrot, and CC By-Sa for MiniFantasyTheater) miss an option: the possibility to prohibit AI generated derivation."

Did they miss it, or did you misunderstand what "commons" means? AI complicates the goal a bit, but no, I don't think they missed anything. Here's what CC had to say on the topic so far: https://creativecommons.org/ai-and-the-commons/

>> "AI is built on the commons. To serve the public interest, AI must help grow, not diminish, the commons, ensuring benefits are widely shared. We need a new social contract, anchored in reciprocity and a shared commitment to the commons."

Which is a great idea. Putting up more barriers doesn't seem compatible with that. All you've done is pre-emptively cordon off your work from the commons based on the tools people use.

Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft on Thursday October 08, 2026 @12:03PM (#50007514)
That sounds like a serious systemic issue. What are US candidates lacking that you find in candidates elsewhere?
Re:RuneScape's Position on Gen AI on Sunday October 04, 2026 @01:33PM (#49955954)
Strong evidence for this: the cottage industry of reusable gadgets in every creative field. Presets and sample packs in music[0], brushes and textures for illustration, models and rigs and so on for 3D. You could go on forever listing it.

[0] And library music for games, which I'm getting into making: https://clubhouse.kyefox.com/posts/2016-2026-162342979

I usually tell it to go fetch research and writing/blogging from practitioners before having it produce lists.
Re:ADHD, autism or complex trauma? [pdf] on Saturday October 03, 2026 @06:11PM (#49948280)
This still sounds like you're trying to justify "weak" and "strong" as useful categories.

>> "Consider breaking down in front of everyone all the time, embarrassing yourself constantly, never knowing what to do, irritating everyone by being inconsolable, etc. vs always being composed, manipulating situations to avoid embarrassment, always being prepared with plans and never depending on others. Despite the fact that the latter is a constant never-ending source of work that mostly never gets used, on top of being incredibly lonely, the former feels worse because everybody sees it as worse."

These are not emotionally mature ways of handling things. These are called maladaptive coping strategies.

Re:ADHD, autism or complex trauma? [pdf] on Saturday October 03, 2026 @05:51PM (#49948146)
You seem to be talking past me.
Re:ADHD, autism or complex trauma? [pdf] on Saturday October 03, 2026 @05:23PM (#49947916)
I don't think "weak" and "strong" are useful in this discussion without defining them carefully. The way most people seem to get through these things is by becoming more thoughtful and emotionally mature. This is what is generally meant by "weak" in these conversations. "Strong" leads to pills and bottles and painful deaths trying to fight the feelings down.
Re:Music Theory for Programmers on Sunday September 06, 2026 @04:32PM (#49590605)
Music theory is a tool for analyzing music and, optionally, helping make it. Treating analysis and composition as inverse operations is going to mislead you. There are useful analyses in music theory that would be completely alien to the person whose work it's based on.

That's what the Library is for. You can use GitHub to keep it outside ChatGPT. GitHub also provides a Chat-based option for sites.

Re:Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B on Thursday August 27, 2026 @08:49AM (#49464018)
OpenRouter->Stripe (~$7B)

Hugging Face->Nvidia ($13B)

Keep an eye on Exa. With local models and niche harnesses proliferating, they're going to need a way to search without everyone having to run their own index.

Google is an obvious buyer if they could get it past regulators. A Doubleclick-level addition of the agentic stuff they're bad at to the indexing they're good at.

Nvidia is the obvious less conflicted #2

Secret third option: Cloudflare. They're already the glue for so much of this stuff.

Re:Graze Joins Flipboard on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @01:39PM (#49452956)
On the one hand, SV-speak has trained me to read acquisitions as an end of good stuff. On the other, if this ATProto experiment really is something different, we need to be willing to consider that old patterns don't hold and expect something better.

I like the optimistic track.

Dolly Parton seemed nice on that episode of The Orville.
Re:New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @11:07AM (#49435461)
It's nice when using large sample libraries so you can stream them off the drive without as much caching in memory. Local LLM workflows probably also benefit from being able to run models too big for RAM off the drive.
ChatGPT Work and Codex use that. Normal chat has a different, unspecified limit.
Re:GPT-5.6 Sol Pricing Cut by 50% on Monday August 17, 2026 @11:19PM (#49340837)
Sol has held stuff for a while to do the same sort of hazard checks I assume Fable is doing, but it always releases them. I think that's the better way to handle it rather than preventing me from seeing how far I can get generating schematics to use in Minecraft. Currently: a mostly normal voxel house.
Re:A Spectre Is Haunting Unicode on Saturday August 15, 2026 @04:37PM (#49314108)

Re:Hello, me. It's been a while on Thursday August 13, 2026 @10:48PM (#49294252)
I had to make my own focus music. What most other people call focus music puts me to sleep.
Humans were shaping their environments to produce food long before they plowed fields. Hunter-gatherers didn't just hunt and gather willy-nilly, picking up whatever they found, oblivious to how it got there.
