Tell HN: Rise in AWS accounts getting hacked and owner being stuck with the bill

I have been seeing a lot of posts on Reddit and other forums of mostly students setting up an AWS account only for them to be hacked and account owner being stuck with a significant bill. Most likely scenario is hackers are trying leaked username/password pairs from other breaches against AWS and gaining access to those accounts. They then spin up EC2 instances in all sorts of regions on the...

Re:Brave launches 1.0 on Wednesday November 13, 2019 @12:44PM (#21527047)
It is a lot more intrusive in my experience. I'd get notifications about random blockchain conferences all the time before I figured I had to disable brave rewards to get rid of them.
Re:Ban kids from loot box gambling in games on Thursday September 12, 2019 @09:13AM (#20951022)
Fifa is the biggest offender IMO, you can spend $10k on loot boxes and you'd still not get the top tier players in the game.

Around $150 CAD gets you around 100,000 in-game coins considering average yield from loot boxes. A player like Ronaldo costs 2.5 to 3 million coins (aka $3750 to $4500) for the first 4-5 months of each game cycle. And he's not even the most expensive card in the game, some cards trade for 15 million coins. To unlock all the top players for your team, you'd probably have to spend way over $10k. To top if off, every Sept. a new game comes out and you have start from scratch

Re:Apple Music Web Client on Friday September 06, 2019 @12:49AM (#20893155)
Apparently even the Apple Music in iTunes tab was written in ember as well: https://twitter.com/geoffreyd/status/616848868391555072?s=21 (from 2015)

IIRC, the old Mac App Store was in ember too

This is one that I came across in that list: https://www.tensil.ai/ there are probably more judging by parent comment
Re:How Weight Training Might Change the Brain on Wednesday July 24, 2019 @11:06PM (#20522234)
for me personally the biggest benefit of weight training has been the discipline it gives me. Once I stick to my gym plan, everything else in my day falls to its place.

Knowing I have to be in the gym every other night from 10 to 11:30, gets me to get my chores done quickly before 10 and not waste time on Reddit/Netflix all night. I also listen to audio books between sets to make a better use of my down time

For anyone looking to get started, I have been following a workout plan called 5x5 for a year and it’s been working all right for me. The idea is you do 5 sets of 5 reps of 5 different workouts and increase the weights you do by 5 pounds each workout

Re:Gist Is Down on Monday July 22, 2019 @11:39AM (#20499004)
HN was the first place I came to check to see if it is just me or if it is down for everyone else. I'm getting errors when trying to push as well

Ask HN: Packaging a Python application as a native windows/mac app

I have a python REST API built with Django and a React frontend. Right now the API is hosted on a bunch of Ec2 instances which works fine but I was hoping to make it work offline (people don't trust sending sensitive information to a third party server)Ideally it would be something like jupyter notebook that launching the application, starts the web server then launches a browser tab that...

Re:"DigitalOcean Killed Our Company" on Friday May 31, 2019 @04:26PM (#20064646)
AWS support is a lot more responsive even if you are not a big source of revenue. One time when I had an issue, I directly reached out to our startup program point of contact and they made sure everything was resolved by constantly following up with the interval team responsible and keeping me in the loop
Re:"DigitalOcean Killed Our Company" on Friday May 31, 2019 @04:20PM (#20064588)
Not even surprised by the way Digital Ocean have handled this. They pulled something similar on me back in 2014 at a previous company I used to work in. They essentially shut down my account and did not even let me get my backups out.
Re:Black – Uncompromising Python code formatter on Friday May 17, 2019 @12:01PM (#19940829)
We have been using this for almost 7-8 months and even though I don't personally like the style of it very much, it has helped keep everything consistent. You can set it up as a pre-commit hook to automatically format the code too
Re:How the Apple Store Lost Its Luster on Tuesday May 07, 2019 @11:07AM (#19850177)
I have also had a bad experience with repairs. Took my laptop in for the first time for keyboard repair, when I got it back they had damaged the screen and some brown hues where randomly popping up on it (its apparently caused by leaving dust inside when assembling the laptop). I took it in the second time and they replaced the screen but didn't tighten the screws inside properly and now my screen wobbles a bit
Re:Redesigning Trust: Blockchain for Supply Chains on Thursday May 02, 2019 @02:52PM (#19811255)
How can you ensure the devices are not hacked though? If someone has physical access them, would it be possible to limit them from tempering with them?
They have a 2 weeks no questions asked return policy. Apple store employees usually suggest buying a new one and then returning it once the repair is complete
Re:Apple announces Apple Card credit card on Monday March 25, 2019 @01:41PM (#19484668)
In Canada I pay for pretty much everything with Apple Pay. It is accepted wherever there is tap available. There is only one coffee shop out of 100+ stores in my town that I can think of that doesn't support Apple Pay
Re:Calculating the mean of a list of numbers (2016) on Saturday March 23, 2019 @12:45PM (#19471179)
Because you're placing a higher weight on elements that come later in the list. Try it for the list [1, 2, 3, 4]

The mean is 2.5 if you sum them all and divide by 4.

With that method it is:

mean([1, 2, 3, 4]) = mean([1.5, 3, 4]) = mean([2.25, 4]) = 3.125

Re:AirPods with Wireless Charging Case on Wednesday March 20, 2019 @01:51PM (#19444794)
It is not as fun to be honest, you have to book an appointment at the Apple store and they don't just sell you one if you walk-in. Then you would have to wait for their technician to verify Airpods were not stolen for them to finally sell you a new case
Re:AirPods with Wireless Charging Case on Wednesday March 20, 2019 @09:39AM (#19441991)
I lost my air pods case again last night so almost perfect timing. Last time I lost it, the replacement case was $70 so it has only gotten $10 more expensive
Re:A Standard and Clean Series A Term Sheet on Monday January 28, 2019 @04:33PM (#19021287)
Probably raise from elsewhere. We got a term sheet that included all the bad things mentioned about control in there. They wanted a 2-2-1 board + a whole bunch of protective provisions about requiring their approval for almost anything. Overall wasn't a pleasant experience and we would have saved months of our time had we not bothered working with them.

We got very lucky that things didn't work out with them

Re:DNS Flag Day on February 1, 2019: check your domains on Thursday January 17, 2019 @10:19AM (#18931372)
Testing my domains on CloudFlare gives me:

Weird since they are listed as one of the supporters

The 2018 keyboard is much better than 2017 and feels nicer to type on. I have both right now and the 2018 seems improved but still not as good as the old keyboards
Re:Focals by North on Tuesday October 23, 2018 @11:51AM (#18284423)
They're $999 a pair AFAIK
It was such a well engineered piece of software. It worked so effortlessly and without any issues. It was so good that I had it installed on my family members’ laptops as well and used it instead of FaceTime for simple calls
If they invest at a company 100k at a cap of of $3mil and discount of 20%, then they will effectively 10X their returns if the company sells for $30mil.

Now if they invest at a company founded by experienced entrepreneurs that has same traction as the previous company, they might have to put-in $1mil at a $10mil cap and they’ll need the company to have an exit of $100mil to 10x their money.

I haven’t looked at the data personally but my hypothesis is inexperienced founders and $30mil exits are more likely than over $100 mil exits with experienced founders. It’s far more likely to sell for $30mil than it is to have an exit upwards of $100mil. So while a n experienced entrepreneur will be more likely to have an exit at $30 mil than an inexperienced one, it won’t produce the same returns for the investors

Re:Molten: A modern Python (3.6+) web framework on Sunday September 30, 2018 @06:56PM (#18108919)
It seems to come with ORM and request validation, metrics, etc. built-in. Flask is fast for getting started but you end up rebuilding most of the things this framework does on your own as your application grows.

It seems like a good middle ground between Flask (minimal and no batteries included) and Django (bloated but very powerful).
