Not entirely. With GrapheneOS, google play services and any other google apps have the same level of control over permissions as any other app. So you can deny access to any features that you don't want it to have access to. Others in this thread have recommended using a separate profile for google apps so it's not even running when you're not using it.
I think Graphene spoofs the most basic level of Google's security thing but they never wanted to spoof anything higher because it would just turn into a cat and mouse game that they would eventually lose.

They recommend that app developers adopt the much stronger and vendor-neutral Android hardware attestation API instead.

Indeed, I suspect this wikipedia page has been astroturfed, or at least is lacking prominent messaging that these are only for show nowadays (perhaps always were?)
I went down the rabbit hole of trying to find the best binary JSON-ish format a couple of years ago, it's very interesting to compare their different design choices. Having read the specification, this looks to be a fresh and minimalist take on a binary format, which is great.

In general, it seems CBOR won the standardisation and support battle while also being one of the more complex and ambiguous (in terms of the number of ways to encode something) formats. I think MessagePack is nicer, though I still wish UBJSON caught on.

YouTube seems to have gotten confused and marked this as "for kids" which disables commenting (and weirdly also adding videos to playlists)

There is already a media query for contrast preferences (increased or decreased) IIRC
Re:Minecraft rewritten from scratch in Kotlin, hypixel works on Monday November 27, 2023 @06:44AM (#38431158)
I think I've seen a Minecraft client reimplementation that runs in the browser, can't remember what it's called though
Re:Minecraft rewritten from scratch in Kotlin, hypixel works on Monday November 27, 2023 @06:42AM (#38431143)
What's interesting is that the Minecraft netcode is so bad that your client physics doesn't even need to be accurate or even correct for it to work. There is no verification that the client's inputs actually match the player's resulting position (not that they're even sent to the server). The client sends their position to the server, the server does some simple checks for flying, speed hacks, phasing through walls, and that's about it. Which is why there's all sorts of interesting movement cheats, and also why most servers run some kind of third-party anticheat plugin.
Re:Windows Key on Sunday November 19, 2023 @06:01AM (#38331475)
It's weird that keyboards before this just didn't have a key there. No one looked at the almost entirely contiguous main block of keys and thought "huh we could put another key in that gap"?
Re:Xash3D: An open-source reimplementation of Half-Life on Friday November 17, 2023 @05:24PM (#38311332)
I have a port of this running on my 3ds. Terrible load times, amazing performance considering the hardware. Pretty funny.
Re:Toward Federation and an Open Network on Friday November 17, 2023 @03:37AM (#38300985)
It's not immediately clear to me whether they're planning to federate with the existing ActivityPub-based network (hard to sat whether they would be accepted) or something based on their own protocol (which probably wouldn't gain traction)
There are ways of putting graphics on screen without requiring users to have WebGL enabled/supported. I think my mobile browser has it disabled for security.
Re:Hare aims to become a 100-year programming language on Friday November 10, 2023 @05:23AM (#38217169)
I'm a big fan of this idea and the language looks nice as well. I hope the project sees success
Re:Monaspace on Thursday November 09, 2023 @06:40PM (#38212961)
Wow, these are pretty nice, with a permissive license too by the looks of things. I like the serif one in particular, very readable to me.
Re:Monaspace on Thursday November 09, 2023 @06:19PM (#38212803)
I have a love/hate relationship with that song. I hate it because some guy used to play it on repeat on a server-wide radio on an old Garry's Mod surf server I frequented... On the other hand, I love being reminded of those times.

for anyone unaware, Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing https://youtu.be/fn4i8bAfnMY

> Fast forward to this century. I've had full conversations with successful people, who announce that they're autistic.

People often change a lot over the years. I know people who had serious difficulties as a child who now function "normally" within society.

Pretty sure the owners of one of the archive sites is a dick and does that intentionally to people who use certain DNS servers
All metaverse articles and marketing is so weird to me because people have been doing this and much more for years in VRChat. It's far from the perfect platform but it's where real people actually hang out, unlike the metaverse.

Also:

> If I can be placed down as an avatar and dynamically move my way through the dance floor while interacting with friends and other partygoers—as apparently promised—then this experience could be a lot of fun. But I wasn't shown that.

That's not a rave.

Re:Pixel 8 Pro on Wednesday October 04, 2023 @11:45AM (#37766858)
My guess is that your question isn't seen as relevant to the post (it's more of a general Android topic) and it has an ad for your failed submission which could be seen as manipulation, which is highly frowned upon on this site. There's a bias against the stereotype of Apple users too.
Re:Pixel 8 Pro on Wednesday October 04, 2023 @11:38AM (#37766743)
Honestly the most appealing thing for me is the seven years of software support. The Pixel 5 support leaves a lot to be desired, given that I don't even want to upgrade from the hardware.

The demo video of their AI photo editor was kind of mind blowing but ultimately not a feature I would use. I've seen a few complaints about their automatic photo processing as well, which you can't disable in the official camera app.

Overall the majority of their features seem to be software which is tied to Google apps/services, which doesn't sit well with me.

Re:Crusty Windows on Monday October 02, 2023 @11:07AM (#37739111)
Then use the LTSC editions which only receive security updates and don't come with any modern Windows crap
Re:UK airport confiscates passenger's Flipper Zero on Friday September 29, 2023 @06:38PM (#37710932)
a more mature response might be something along the lines of "I'm a cybersecurity researcher/hobbyist and the device is used to communicate with other electronics for the purposes of security research", although that argument doesn't exactly have a good track record with law enforcement in many countries...
Re:Epic Games Cutting 870 Jobs, 16 Percent of Its Workforce on Friday September 29, 2023 @09:29AM (#37703931)
That's not how percentages work...
The term is "noctalgia" for those who don't want to feed the clickbait
I would bet that it doesn't matter for 99% of scripts. By the numbers, Godot's primary use case so far has effectively just been game jams.
Re:Artic Code Vault on Saturday September 09, 2023 @03:58AM (#37443199)
What I find more interesting is the guide they wrote on how to make use of the vault itself, intended for people far in the future. I think it's also mostly marketing crap but there is some substance to it. https://github.com/github/archive-program
Re:Ruby Outperforms C: Breaking the Catch-22 on Saturday September 09, 2023 @03:04AM (#37442926)
Somehow I can't find a source for this but it's well known that Go prefers compilation speed over runtime performance. Doesn't help that they implement the entire compiler stack themselves so it definitely misses optimisations that other compilers can already do.

Also, I've never heard of anyone using assembly for performance optimisations. It would never happen where Go in commonly used (server programming), maybe if you're doing graphics or something nonstandard?

Re:Emoji Generator with AI on Friday September 08, 2023 @05:59PM (#37439890)
I tried a few times to get a good "donkey kong thumbs up" emoji but the results didn't make much sense (spritesheet-like, missing any kind of thumbs up). Most of them did contain Donkey Kong, in some weird AI-deformed way.

Re:WASM: Big Deal or Little Deal? on Monday September 04, 2023 @08:13PM (#37386446)
For the web and other use cases where it is embedded in another program (e.g. sandboxed plugins, other places where Lua or similar would've gone previously), I think yes. But I really don't see something like WASI or WASM servers sticking around, especially because it still has a noticeable performance penalty compared to native (can't source this right now, need to sleep)
