Could you tell more about these 'nix boxes? Sounds very interesting.
I would be much more interested in some deterministic utilities than an LLM wrapper, but this is also nice, thanks for sharing.
Re:Show HN: database of the world's brands on Sunday June 30, 2024 @03:58PM (#40839827)
The idea is cool. The quality of the data is very questionable, though. The color swatches appear more or less random. What does that orange have to do with Google and that maroon with Microsoft? And yet they are in the spotlight of the demo page.

I've never before gone 4 levels of parentheses deep whilst reading text that isn't programming code.
I know about templates, but I don't believe they are designed for fungible copies. You can run a bunch of [email protected], but it's not the same UX as `pm2 start my-app -i number-of-copies`.
I don't think systemd has a built-in load balancer. Also, running multiple copies of the same service isn't typical PID-1 stuff, so maybe doing that with systemd involves some friction.

I've enjoyed writing a few projects in x86-64 assembly as well, for what it's worth. Even though I'm sure that any C compiler would generate better assembly than my handwritten one. Flat assembler is great, by the way.
Re:Cybersecurity Is Broken on Saturday April 06, 2024 @03:58PM (#39954992)
I'm fascinated by C. I agree that using almost anything else automatically eliminates entire classes of bugs and vulnerabilities, but it's so much _fun_ to be close to the machine and avoid those bugs and vulnerabilities myself. Judging by the fact that even some greenfield projects are still written in C, I'm not alone.
Re:Cybersecurity Is Broken on Saturday April 06, 2024 @03:40PM (#39954842)
The ideal data protection law would prevent most of the data from being collected in the first place. Cybersecurity, on the other hand, is about protecting what you have collected anyway. So, maybe cybersecurity is broken, but fixing privacy is a great first step.
By being generic and customizable it will have the potential to become a great new game in its own right. Let the community begin with something they already know and love (MtG) and watch them coming up with cool new stuff.

> so if you are able to specify a short TTL for a TXT record in your domain control panel

Triweb users are able to do that, but they don't necessarily know that they need to do that. For example, the Cloudflare DNS dashboard displays "auto" as a TTL by default, and one has no idea how many seconds "auto" is for a TXT record.

Re:Show HN: This website is hosted on DNS on Monday February 26, 2024 @02:52PM (#39516041)
I know that it's all configurable, what I meant is that some DNS providers may apply a long TTL by default, and it may be desirable to let users of Triweb know about this possible source of confusion.
Re:Show HN: This website is hosted on DNS on Sunday February 25, 2024 @01:11PM (#39503180)
This is a nice PoC. For how long are TXT records usually cached? Triweb might not see the latest changes to the websites for quite some time.
This would enable some advanced merge conflict resolution strategies, I suppose. However, it can also be done by building the ASTs on demand and still storing plain text.
Re:Show HN: A bulk image compression service on Sunday January 14, 2024 @11:21AM (#38991764)
Well done. SVGs can be selected in the file picker, but the compressor doesn't seem to support them. You should probably further limit the selection to raster formats.
If it requires little effort, it's fine, but generally before working on something one should ask the maintainers whether the status quo is deliberate.
I imagine a lot of such pull requests wouldn't be merged.
Many tiling WMs have an option for gaps between the windows. Do you find them unpleasant? I love my 8px gaps. Most of the wallpaper is still covered, though.
I use the mobile version regularly, especially when it's warmer outside than it is now, and TIL that it is open source. Now I consider purchasing the pro version, as a form of donation.
Thank you for the link. I had no idea about most of the optional tags. It looks ugly when taken to extremes, though.
Re:Show HN: Your Raw HTTP Response -> URL on Monday January 08, 2024 @06:47PM (#38920201)
It can be a nice stub for testing when integrating an API that doesn't have a sandbox environment.
Re:A New Blog for 2024 on Tuesday January 02, 2024 @10:51AM (#38842819)
The background noise is a subtle detail I would have never noticed on my own, but it does subconsciously make the blog appeal to me. Content in front of something that looks like real paper appears more credible than the same content on a flat background.

Re:Show HN: Shmux – script runner for almost any language on Thursday December 21, 2023 @09:43AM (#38720984)
I think you should show the JS example first. The bash examples don't tell how it is different from make, just, etc.
Re:Show HN: I made a dead simple logo maker on Wednesday December 20, 2023 @10:45AM (#38709901)
There must be a memory leak in the icon picker. It eats more than 1.5 GB.
Re:Show HN: Fully automatic Git alternative/companion on Friday December 15, 2023 @10:44AM (#38655237)
That's all right if they are not integrated into an IDE. The typical scenario is: a file is edited by a human -> linter/formatters run -> 60 seconds delay -> the file is backed up. Therefore, debouncing has a handy side-effect of letting linters/formatters run before a version of the file is stored.
Re:Show HN: Fully automatic Git alternative/companion on Friday December 15, 2023 @01:47AM (#38651678)
Yes, Klunok can work alongside Git.
Re:Show HN: Fully automatic Git alternative/companion on Thursday December 14, 2023 @03:05PM (#38646551)
inotify doesn't tell which process writes to a file, and Klunok is all about tracking only files edited by a human. Also, monitoring entire subtrees with inotify is painful and prone to race conditions.
