alternative title ...

"all the worlds expertise has just been handed to me in an adundance that I cannot fully comprehend yet"

carry on student, carry on.

its just the ghost of your ego.

Also, its their degree. AI doesn't need one. You have AI.

From product to producer in 24 hours. Go!

If AI can find the holes in programming code, it can do the same with legal code, paving the way for chaos.

Felix Ringe, a visiting fellow at Stanford Law School’s liftlab and legal scholar, suggests large language models (LLMs) have become potent enough that they could break legal systems by identifying exploitable inconsistencies at scale.

...

the ability to discover adversarially useful inconsistencies in the law in an automated way risks overwhelming the legal system's ability to bridge the gaps.

No. Just, no.

The premise of this article is just way off base.

If AI suggests a behavior, to a person or group of people, that is legal, then how do the courts gets overwhelmed ? It's a lawful actvitity.

If AI suggests an illegal behavior, then we have the same situation we have now. The perp gets caught or he doesn't.

If anything, AI should likely end up helping with case backlogs.

Altman leaves out of this the fact that OpenAI has basically tried to corner the market on RAM, trying to lock up 40% of the world’s supply without even guaranteeing that it will follow through on the actual purchase orders. I mean, I think that alone would have at least some impact on the current price for RAM, wouldn’t it?

Hes going to lobby the federal government to confiscate all your RAM, like FDR did with the gold. :|

All screwed.

Everyone is going to use AI to draw up their plans.

Take a photo. Print your part.

The efficiency we all dreamed of is now here to destroy us.

Re:Should you feel grief for the dead who go to heaven? on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:21AM (#50335872)
I'm finding it difficult to answer this question without evidence that heaven exists. I would need to know the details of what heaven is, to know how I should feel about someone being there.

In the absence of evidence, my assumption is that grief is felt by survivors for their loss.

Grieving is for the living, not the dead.

It looked like a ballistic missile. Straight down into the pavement.

If it had been more horizontal, there would likely have been casualties on the ground as well.

I suspect they release the audio, ironically, to calm airline passengers letting them know it was a unique situation.

Analysis of Miami NEXRAD radar shows the Learjet 60 (N722BD) entered a thunderstorm core near Wellington at about 12:48 PM ET, just before it crashed in Palm Beach County.

At 35,000 feet, radar echoes around the jet jumped to 34 dBZ, with a 52 dBZ core below it and storm tops near 47,000 feet. Tracking data shows the jet climbed about 450 feet inside the core, then went into a spiraling dive and crashed 76 seconds later.

Aren't Virtual Private Servers a form of time-sharing ?

They could just allow people to buy wood stoves again.

Citizens would then harvest all the fuel on their own, trade it amongst themselves, drastically reducing the risk of wildfires, while growing local economies.

Nevermind. Too practical to pass.

Lets use robots to dump PFAs into the watershed. Yeah, we can make money off that.

The technology is impressive.

Re:A tiny Pacific country rolls out universal basic income on Sunday November 01, 2026 @10:39AM (#50326675)
Well, in a sense, it is a natural law.

The CEOs and boards who operated this way survived.

The ones who didn't, didn't.

I don't know how you are going to change the dynamic.

Any change will have to be approved by the powerful survivors, who know exactly how their behaviors have benefited them.

You're asking the king(s) to step down as king(s).

Accomplishing it historically has required force and rarely ended as planned.

But overall I agree with you, that if we are going to make a systemic change, the change should benefit those with the least, at the expense of those with the most, because that is a path towards equilibrium, not away from it as we have been progressing since the mid 70's.

And, AI may actually reduce the status of the wealthy the most, given, the more the individual can do for his/her self, the less we need a "corporate brain trust" to make a widget for us.

Economically, AI could play out to be the force that reduced the oligarchs to the same status as the common man.

We all shall see.

Personally, I'm neither for, nor against, UBI.

I think these small scale experiments have value, and that its part of the process of adapting to our environment.

What I can say with absolute confidence is, the post Bretton-Woods financial system promoted by my government, the only one I know, has increased wealth inequality spectacularly, and I expect any changes to the system to continue this trend.

And thats why I want to grow onions. I can eat them. They keep vampires away.

> Maybe the companies firing people or shutting down operations somewhere aren’t properly motivated to successfully retrain the people they are replacing?

No, at least not in the US.

A corporation has a primary fiduciary responsibility to its shareholders.

Every promise ever made by a corporation to an employee or customer was just "so much bullshit, subject to change" in order to fulfill their legal obligation to the shareholders.

It's always been this way, no matter how many employees or workers actually believed said promises.

People still think the grocery store sells food as well, when the reality is that the nutrients are removed and sold elsewhere, reducing satiety, increasing sales due to intentional malnutrition.

And your doctor isn't sending you down the road to wellness when he prescribes you GLP1 antagonists instead of a proper diet and exercise.

The cold hard truths of reality.

I don't see where I blamed anyone. Can you point it out ?

Did you mean the part where I said millions will never use AI to benefit themselves ?

We've had libraries for centuries. Millions chose not to use those as well, because they wanted a beer instead.

Its normal human behavior.

The proverb "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink" exists for this reason.

Re:A tiny Pacific country rolls out universal basic income on Sunday November 01, 2026 @09:08AM (#50325852)
Well, perhaps AI will teach them that political promises are no match for economic reality.
Re:A tiny Pacific country rolls out universal basic income on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:44AM (#50325641)
As a software engineer who is working on retiring to a small farm somewhere, I have no problem with the prospect of living on 10% of my former income, assuming, the other 90% of my income used to be spent on obtaining resources that I now can obtain for myself or no longer need.

In other words, if I can do more for myself, I require less interaction with commercial and governmental institutions.

Since money is a form of communication, if I am conducting fewer financial transactions because I am solving problems on my own, my standard of living doesn't necessarily decline with reduced income.

30 years ago, if you needed a one off plastic part by tomorrow, you were most likely simply screwed.

20 years ago, if you needed a one off plastic part by tomorrow, you could probably get it at a fairly high cost.

10 years ago, if you needed a one off plastic part by tomorrow, $10 worth of gas across town and back and you had your part for an affordable price.

The world never ended, people just adapted to the new environment.

Today, if you need a one off plastic part by tomorrow, you ask AI to crank out a 3D file, its in your hand in a few hours, and you crank out 4 more parts in the remaining time.

If the individual is more productive on his/her own, he/she will naturally conduct fewer commercial transactions with his/her neighbor or neighboring tribe, and the forces of supply and demand do exactly what we know they do.

Some numbers get smaller, some numbers get larger, and we all wake up tomorrow and eat breakfast.

Having food you can eat is wealth.

Having 100% of your time at your own command is wealth.

AI is doing what every politician promised, and none could deliver.

It just made everyone (potentially) wealthy.

And it will only get more interesting in the Confucious sense as more people realize this.

Dare I say it .... world peace ? ( dependency on others as a source of fear and insecurity -> AI reducing dependency to minimal amounts -> every individual confident and secure -> ego death -> world peace ... the presumed potential path )

Re:A tiny Pacific country rolls out universal basic income on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:35AM (#50325556)
You don't need to do anything to retrain someone.

You let them retrain themselves.

People in "coal country" who can't get a job in a mine, do something other than mining. Hunger is a powerful motivator.

A $10 a month cell phone plan is all it takes to get 24/7 access to all the worlds information, and AI's intelligent queries into it.

And yes, you will have millions who never learn how to use said information to their own benefit, but we've known for awhile that poverty is a behaviorial problem as much as it is a resource problem.

Re:A tiny Pacific country rolls out universal basic income on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:14AM (#50325350)
> I don't think the difficulty is with the drivers, more with the logistics of retraining them all at once.

The only events that happen "all at once" are in our heads as hypotheticals.

In the real world, every change takes time to propagate.

It stands to reason, all of the "experts" of the world are going to be in less demand than they were before, because some percentage of people, will replace them with AI, for some percentage of tasks.

Stated another way, each of us will be consulting with AI more, and assigning some number of tasks to a non-expert, with the help of expertise from AI, and talking to human experts less frequently.

Interactions will decrease in frequency. In the commercial space, this means transactions will decrease in number and amount. This is "bad" for everyone, in the financial sense. Corporations lose revenues, governments lose revenues, employees get pay cuts, etc.

But downward trajectories on financial charts have been a problem for every fiat based economy we know of, long before AI came into the picture.

Maybe AI will teach the world what to do when the charts turn down instead of up.

Re:The Perceived Value of Software Engineers Is Going Down on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:12AM (#50325333)
Ironically, as a software engineer, my perceived value of marketing, sales, management, and maintenance have all declined significantly.

With an AI client app running on my trucks android stereo, I can hire day laborers from the home depot parking lot to replace them.

And now that I read my own words, I think both positions are flawed. :|

Re:A tiny Pacific country rolls out universal basic income on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:00AM (#50325235)
I was thinking that everyone would suddenly become a "truck driver" overnight, just so they can sign up for the free money.

We need to keep in mind the scope and scale of the environments in which this UBI experiment is being tried in.

The temporary success or failure of the UBI experiment seems entirely dependent on whether the country is a major currency, a manufacturing base, a service oriented economy, etc, etc, etc. and it doesn't seem likely to work for everyone, or for any individual small nation for an indefinite period of time.

> there is realistically no way to retrain this cohort. [truck drivers]

I disagree. They had to attend class and pass a test to get a CDL. They were trained to drive a truck, they can be trained to perform another task. Truck drivers are not lobotomized.

Re:Enlightenment 0.28 Released with Many Improvements on Sunday November 01, 2026 @07:48AM (#50325142)
Yeah, they all have one quirk or another which seems to make the app your trying to work on impossible. For me, it was always the integration of async event loops w/ the widget framework.

As for the decade old roast, theres a few things I disagree with.

...

Using Qt, one would write:

auto widget = new QWidget{parent}; widget->show();

2 lines, all obvious, all working as expected.

...

No. It's 2 lines, which makes it "not at all obvious." Those 2 lines have so much baked in functionality, I have no idea what its doing until I read 100 pages of documentation and become an "expert" on the internals of that specific UI toolkit.

...

But let’s go into some details. Remember the quote about types? EFL takes that philosophy seriously. Everything is a pointer to something called Evas_Object, which translates to void *. Those knowledgeable in the horrible language of C know it’s a pointer to anything. And so it is.

...

Okay, now we see where the motivation to roast comes from. This guy hates the C language itself, so he's going to hate any GUI toolkit coded in C.

Theres no argument from me that C's syntax makes coding GUIs based on object hierarchies more difficult than languages with proper OO support, but the alternatives have their own problems as well.

At the end of the day, its good to have choices.

You got me there.

I forgot about GNOME/gtk+

Which is odd, because I've written a bit of gtk 3 code.

I don't know, I don't want to say anything negative, only that I'm looking forward to using enlightenment again. :|

Much like physicists who spend their careers searching for a "grand unified theory of everything," I'm a software engineer searching for the UI toolkit that runs on everything.

I wanted it to be enlightenment, way back in the day,

Before becomming enthralled with the widgets of gtk,

Gave both IUP and Agar a try, but much to my dismay,

There were quirks to be found, so I tossed them away.

Local services are the solution to this.
