Get this: China sends us all this great stuff, and the only thing they get is OUR FIAT CURRENCY, which is essentially worthless. And then, what do they do with that currency? They buy our treasury bonds, which pay them interest in our own fiat currency. Not only that, but every bond they buy is more encouragement to help us keep the US economy strong and stable. The trade deficit thing looks like a great deal for us when viewed from some angles.
Re:Save Daylight Savings Time on Saturday December 21, 2024 @11:03PM (#42484312)
I've been saying that for decades. The concept of time zones became anachronistic when instant communication went worldwide.
Re:TeamViewer Security Breach on Thursday June 27, 2024 @06:26PM (#40815864)
I dumped TeamViewer a few months ago in favor of Google Remote Desktop. It satisfies my occasional low bar requirements, and doesn't make me feel guilty for using it without pay. I connect between iPad, Windows, Linux, a couple of times a month. Easiest thing I've found so far.
Re:Ask HN: Which distro do you use? (2023) on Sunday July 23, 2023 @04:10PM (#36839303)
Mint, for the last few years. I honestly don't remember why I chose Mint after using Ubuntu previously. In any case, I'm not shopping for a change. It does exactly what I need.
This line may be crucial: "The cell model that we used in this study is a carcinoma cell line, with active DNA replication which differs from non-dividing somatic cells."
Re:One-Man Amphibious 'Copter' [video] (1955) on Wednesday February 02, 2022 @04:10PM (#30184105)
The music was originally created for the Paramount Superman cartoons of the 40s. https://youtu.be/_djxH-q0e48
Re:A $3B bet on finding the fountain of youth on Friday January 21, 2022 @11:58AM (#30026273)
If this research can reduce the enormous cost of old age frailty, even if not extending life by much, the payoffs are there.
Re:Technology Behind the Lilium Jet on Wednesday December 22, 2021 @01:46PM (#29653379)
From those videos, it's difficult to be sure those are full size prototypes and not scale models.

Re:How you play Spades is how you play life on Monday August 30, 2021 @04:40PM (#28360626)
I learned Spades in the USNavy, and didn't realize that it was intimately associated with African-American culture at all. I preferred Spades, but the most popular card game (at that time, in that setting) was Euchre.
And we will hear only crickets on this one...
Re:Buttergate: Why are Canadians complaining about hard butter? on Wednesday February 24, 2021 @07:47AM (#26249280)
I'm a little skeptical that the properties of palm oil that could raise the melting point of butter would survive the cow's digestion process. In any case, the experiments to prove the relationship should be almost trivially easy, right?
Re:Ask HN: Why is everyone here so obsessed with Lisp? on Wednesday August 14, 2019 @03:11PM (#20698906)
Here is a powerful and elegant human language: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esperanto (although it should be said that its power is mostly hypothetical until it becomes widely used, which may be never)
That original video looked phony to me two years ago, and in comparison to the latest, it looks even worse. Am I completely alone in this?
Re:Dyson Lightcycle Task Lamp on Thursday March 21, 2019 @08:43AM (#19451621)
Personally, I'm done with Dyson. James was a vocal supporter of Brexit, gets what he wants, then decides to move his company's HQ to Singapore. That kind of blatant hypocrisy taints their products for me.
Re:We Should Think Twice About Colonizing Space on Monday February 18, 2019 @10:30AM (#19191332)
Silly idea. We could not possibly come up with all the possible outcomes (positive and negative) of space colonization in order to make an "informed" decision. If Phil Torres and his friends decide for us that space colonization should not proceed, how do they enforce that decision?
Re:Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen? on Thursday September 27, 2018 @12:44PM (#18086213)
Lots of great documentaries already mentioned, but one of my favorites "Tim's Vermeer" hasn't been yet. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/tims_vermeer_2014
Could somebody please kill this story before the wrong bureaucrat realizes this is happening and I lose my precheck status when I fly with my wife? Snitches get stitches.

Re:The estate tax is a bad tax say economists (2001) on Thursday December 28, 2017 @11:02AM (#16022759)
Remember that there's a HUGE exemption (the recently passed Donor Relief Act increases it to >$20M) and then it's only a percentage of the amount above that exemption. Your tears are wasted.
Re:The estate tax is a bad tax say economists (2001) on Thursday December 28, 2017 @10:59AM (#16022724)
Apparently an 11 million dollar exemption (soon to be >20 million) isn't enough to satisfy these oligarchs - (not to mention that above that exemption, we're still only talking a percentage, not the entire fortune).
Re:Ask HN: Which scifi authors to interview about immortality? on Monday September 25, 2017 @12:35PM (#15331836)
Seconded.
