This part's a little confusing to me. What does "suffix" mean in this context? (Is it referring to just like the style-instructions boilerplate text you might include with each image?)

And then also: does locking a set seed really have an effect one way or other for consistency? Wouldn't changing the prompt text even if only slightly have just as much a randomization effect as changing the seed, making fixing it or using a random seed both functionally the same? Or is that not how the latest models work?

Re:Unit Tests are not the enemy on Friday October 23, 2026 @08:22PM (#50217138)
All things in moderation, I suppose. 800k+ lines is a lot of unit test code, even for a big monorepo, and deleting that much could be justified if there are still a solid core of better quality unit tests left over. Now, if they really meant all unit tests, that's a bit more suspect, but maybe they still have a solid core of integration and other higher order tests, which could make the decision still somewhat sensible, on a cost-benefit basis.

> Online I’ve seen instances where developers are proclaiming that all of their tests will be end-to-end. So we’re trading tests that are cheap with tests that are slower, need a running system and fail intermittently. An end-to-end test belongs at the top of the pyramid and when you move everything there, it gives you less coverage at a higher cost and topples over.

E2E tests can definitely be fragile, but I've definitely also seen cases of unit tests being fragile too: they try to go way beyond the scope of the "unit", and end up failing inconsistently for all sorts of benign reasons (e.g., leaking state between tests), wasting time. When you get into those kind of situations, just declaring unit test bankruptcy is a little tempting. But there's got to be some balance.

Re:You can now generate files in Gemini on Wednesday April 29, 2026 @04:42PM (#47954324)
One pain point I had with Gemini for a while was for a use case where I needed it to output exact specific ASCII-formatting back out, such as asterisks around words meant to be italicized, for copying out. But Gemini kept auto-formatting those words as italics in its chat display, removing the asterisks (and other formattings) in the process.

Eventually I realized the "fix" was to ask it to begin its response with:

```text
...Which consistently got it to output in a plain text block. It worked, but was frustrating to have to figure out.
Hopefully this file generation stuff will help reduce that pain point.
Re:$1,605: average annual ad value of a U.S. Google user on Tuesday April 28, 2026 @11:33AM (#47935975)
It's interesting/non-intuitive to me that parents would be worth less than non-parents. I wonder: is that because they actually tend to spend less, or is it because more of the clicks are accidental ones, from when the kids get handed the phone?
But I guess that would apply more to display ads than to search ones, so I'm not sure. Confusing.
