Re:Can turning office towers into apartments save downtowns?

Yeah, the US is big. Movies and TV shows usually only show like 2 or 3 cities which makes everything seem like it's close together. For instance I live on the east coast, and I've never been to LA California, which might seem weird but it's over 2500 miles away. Different regions have basically different sub-cultures that emerge because we're so spread out.
Re:Second Life's Formula Will Never Be Replicated
on Monday April 29, 2024 @04:12PM (#40203545)
I remember when Second Life was new and touted as "The Future". Gamers jumped into it but many left because there was simply nothing to do unless you were a creative type who had the skill to create and sell items in the 'game'. I'm guessing today it's just creative people hanging out with creative people, which is probably a fun experience for them, but not something that will appeal to a wide audience.

on Wednesday February 21, 2024 @02:03PM (#39458013)
Surprised the author didn't bring up the corporate mentality of having to justify having (sometimes) large office buildings, cafeterias, etc that make their campuses look impressive but are a massive cost sink if nobody is utilizing them. You can say "just get rid of the buildings" but then (thinking of tech companies) they won't APPEAR to be as big or popular as other tech companies.

Cable TV didn't have ads when it started, and then started adding advertisements once they realized they could get away with it. That's when you ended up with HBO, which was an additional cost above standard cable TV. Corporations are never "content", but always require more and more income.
Re:Jackie Coogan and the Fall of Hollywood's Child Stars

"Gentle Parenting" is another instance. It could mean that you set boundaries but are more cautious about how you give punishments, attempting to fit the punishment to the bad deed. Or it could mean that you let the child do whatever they want and give them everything, teaching them that there are no negative consequences to their actions and that others are there to serve them.
Re:Why do so many people think they are in a bullshit job?
on Friday October 13, 2023 @11:53AM (#37871990)
As a small cog in a large corporate machine, I get this. You just keep spinning and spinning, seemingly doing the same kinds of projects and the same work over and over again, often with no understanding of where the projects are coming from or whether or not the hard work you're putting in has any real value. And then there's constant changing and revisions and sometimes the project gets dropped, which is a clear indication that your hard work was basically wasted by higher ups who seem to have no understanding of the work that has to go into the projects.
I get paid though, so I'll keep spinning and find my value as a human outside of work.

Easy to say when the OS is more important to you than the games. But when games are more important than the OS it's a different matter. Most gamers just want to click on the game and have it run, they don't want to mess with WINE or proton or Lutris or playonlinux

on Monday December 23, 2019 @12:28PM (#21865220)
The author seems to forget that the internet existed in the 70's and 80's, and smartphones existed before 2009. Back then they were experimental and many people thought they might go away, and they might have gone away if they weren't then refined into technologies that average consumers could more easily use.
