This is called moral hazard, and people love to worry about it. Usually though (the relevant example here is PrEP, or birth control) it's fine and enables people to live their lives with fewer risks to their, and others, wellbeing
> A war with large geographic scope has been independently modeled as having a high probability of occurring circa 2030 by major governments for a decade or more

Do you have more information about this, or a source?

Kind of like keeping a certain plane model number the same, and claiming that re-training isn't needed even when it clearly is

After reading "If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies" I think this is not the correct take. If anyone creates ASI, it just means it's going to wipe everyone out, and it doesn't matter if China or the US do it first

Supply-chain attacks aren't really a property of the dependency management system

Not having a dependency management system isn't a solution to supply chain attacks, auditing your dependencies is

Ironically the same argument applies

And in tank warfare this is called spalling

A projectile hits the armor and doesn't penetrate it, but the armor inside still fragments and injured the operators

Agreed. There's also getting a hexadollar from Donald Knuth for finding errors in The Art of Computer Programming

I've never done either, so I'm not bragging or anything

Look I love giving people the benefit of the doubt, but that's not why this pricing model exits. It's because they want to capture a percentage of the value delivered, and the easiest way to do that it to charge by executions
What's a good organization to donate to which would oppose this?

Even being generous, and saying it's a year, most capital expenditures depreciate over a period of 5-7 years. To state the obvious, training one model a year is not a saving grace
Not necessarily though, it depends on where you got the book from (Amazon, the library?), and what your question is
This is always true though. Any data that a cloud company has against you can be subpoenad

It would be weird for him not to be transparent about that

Interesting, I find that youtube is a great resource for educational content and was very useful in highschool etc.

This seems like throwing the baby out with the bathwater, but to be fair AI and really toxic context wasn't as big of a thing when I was in highschool

Re:GLP-1s Are Breaking Life Insurance on Monday July 14, 2025 @10:49AM (#44560931)
In my school there was a strong emphasis on what a healthy diet is baked into the curriculum. Along with my family's relatively healthy cooking, that set me up for cooking and eating well on my own through college and life after that. I would edge away from takes related to "it just wouldn't work"

I mean the education system is its own mess for other reasons, but it's not a complete failure

Wouldn't it only be cancer if your immune system doesn't destroy it? If your immune system can handle it, that's just normal.

The DNA damage that the parent was talking about would lead to cancerous cells which your immune system cannot handle, which is different from the ones that your immune system can handle

Is that accurate? The Willis proceedings were about events around 2021, so that's only 4 years at best

Can you please explain what you found weird? I just started using sea-query and haven't found anything super odd quite yet, but I've only written a few migrations and queries so far
The only gripe I have nowadays with libraries is that they don't have a specific book I'm looking to read

But I found that it's possible to request books like that through other libraries, since most libraries have agreements with other libraries to allow interlibrary loans

But only on Android as far as I know

The last Chrome update also disabled it for me because it's a manifest v2 extension. I use firefox on my personal computers, but might need to switch on my work PCs as well
Re:AMD YOLO on Friday March 07, 2025 @02:40PM (#43293633)
Agreed, but I don't think that's a good use for PE. PE is useful for comparisons between similar companies, not as an absolute yardstick
Re:AMD YOLO on Friday March 07, 2025 @01:48PM (#43292976)
> AMD is probably undervalued, but Nvidia is clearly way overvalued.

AMD trades at a price to earnings ratio of 99, NVDA trades at a PE of ~38. PE isn't everything when looking at companies, but I don't see other reasons to think AMD is undervalued
