Re:Old laptops in a colo as low cost servers on Thursday April 09, 2026 @04:45PM (#47709761)
The premise was kinda dumb, wouldn't be surprised if its just a scam.

Wait, whats the point of this if I can have my old laptop running in my garage?
Re:PicoZ80 – Drop-In Z80 Replacement on Thursday April 09, 2026 @04:43PM (#47709718)
So is this just for hobbyists or it has any, say, industrial applications? are there any machines still running on a Z80?
Odds are if he left there's the possibility their compensation situation might have changed for the worse if not leading to downsizing, that in the edge of a recession with plenty of competition out there.
Win11 its such a dumpster fire they had to stop selling Win10 licenses to force people to upgrade.

Add to that porting copilot to Win10 because there aren't enough Win11 users around.

You got a point in the optimization part, it's difficult to compare both chips when you're running on completely different OSs, specially when one of them ruins a specially optimized OS like ios

The closest it could get I think would be running a variant of Unix optimized for the Ryzen.

"no where to go"

Indeed, subs and groups in social media have decimated web forums, web2.0 has consolidated most communities within a handful of sites.

A Russian company launched a similar keyboard like 10 years ago, don't know what the long term reliability was

Not all the keys can change and the ones that can't are all Mac ones which limits the adoption of Windows users which like it or not are still the vast majority

Are you going to support evernote?
Re:Ask HN: What are the best unknown books you have read? on Monday January 20, 2020 @06:24PM (#22102905)
Can't believe nobody has mentioned Blindsight yet.

Awesome scifi book, it will blow your mind.

If you think this is bad wait until streaming-only games get killed.
Re:Consume less, create more on Monday August 26, 2019 @12:39PM (#20801260)
Many who used to have a PC now have just a smartphone but the problem is that phones are modeled to be consumption devices, not for production. Even pro/highend mobile devices lack the ability to compete head-to-head with an actual laptop/macbook because the underlying OS is limited in scope by design.

TL;DR: you were never meant to do work on a phone, just watch stuff

>but on most things there's almost no difference between they and Aliexpress. I can buy the same products from Aliexpress way cheaper and have them delivered in 2-3 days.

That's what a lot of FBA vendors are, middlemen. Some Chinese companies learned about this and are now doing FBA directly.....but the quality is the same and so are the prices.

I remember looking into startup ideas for an FBA venture and the forums being incredibly sleazy most of the time.

That was years ago, no surprise this is the result.

>according to our own personal interpretation

That's incredibly problematic

What tech?
Re:Ask HN: What do you do with your Raspberry Pi? on Wednesday June 26, 2019 @11:01PM (#20291407)
Well that sucks, I could see this being used in VR arcades
Re:Ask HN: What do you do with your Raspberry Pi? on Wednesday June 26, 2019 @11:00PM (#20291398)
Side question: how did the company go? and what was the product (the animation) for? games?
Is this another tech that's "just around the corner" like holo-memory from the late 90's?
Or just ban companies that use it from operating in the EU
It could given the proper legislation and strict safety protocols. The costs would be offset by taxing these polluting fossil ships.
Re:Mazda is purging touchscreens from its vehicles on Tuesday June 18, 2019 @07:22AM (#20211762)
They're right but their solution is cumbersome and counter intuitive.

What we need is to put all the controls both within sign and within reach of the driver, that means in and around the steering wheel, just like it was done in sport cars where driver focus is essential.

Yeah the K20, not too expensive either.
Re:Maker Faire halts operations and lays off all staff on Sunday June 09, 2019 @03:03PM (#20141144)
Not the same generation (waaay later) but I too had a PC at home back in the DOS days when computers were not that common. I learned to use the command line before I learned to read and write in my native language.

Anyway, I went through a similar thinkering scene but it was in software, the FOSS scene of the late nineties up to early this decade was very active and there were tons of tools and programs that surpassed retail software of the time.

As for electronics right now, there's some crazy things in the FOSH scene and if I had the money I would get more into that, but when it comes to retail electronic and IoT stuff I'm skeptic: too many corners cut, too many security holes, too much data going into opaque servers, etc. And that's just security and privacy, don't get me started on planed obsolescence and repairability.

And there's still a lot of stuff you can make that have no retail equivalent, from console clones with FPGAs for perfect emulation to car automation with comma.ai
