Re:Ask HN: Food Addiction on Saturday May 14, 2022 @06:18PM (#31383201)
Not a nutritionist here, but I'll share what I'm doing right now. I'm 14 days into a 30-day plant-based meal program/ reset and have never felt better. I'm eating all sorts of veggies that I wouldn't normally think to try or know how to prepare. I have more energy. I'm sleeping well. My acne has cleared up. I did have one slip up while traveling at an airport and I immediately noticed how crummy that food made me feel. I got right back on my program.
Re:Show HN: YouCode, a Search Engine for Coding on Wednesday May 11, 2022 @04:24PM (#31345255)
Ok, You.com just made my workflow so much easier. You all have been great for technical searches, but this is next level. Great job, Richard and Bryan.
you.com is good for coding, especially the SO results.
Re:The next Google on Tuesday April 05, 2022 @01:17PM (#30921830)
"DuckDuckGo and Bing are not true alternatives – they’re just worse versions of Google."

"The next Google can’t just be an input box that spits out links. We need new thinking to create something much better than what came before."

Could not agree more.

Great roundup of some exciting search alternatives. Thanks for sharing.

Re:Ask HN: Why isn't there a Google competitor emerging? on Sunday March 27, 2022 @08:40PM (#30825688)
I just like and agree with conceptually Nuzzerino's idea above.

"Decentralized configuration would allow for communities with given interests to configure and distribute customizations for that audience, in a way that would appeal to that audience."

Re:Ask HN: Why isn't there a Google competitor emerging? on Sunday March 27, 2022 @11:01AM (#30820742)
I've been pretty stoked on you.com so far. I do like the ability to pick my search sources (apps). It would be cool to see search results for different genres/communities.

You heard it right there folks. Another reason to de-google.
Re:Ask HN: Starting a Career in Programming at 61? on Friday March 25, 2022 @03:20PM (#30806096)
Just wanted to chime in and say I think that awesome of your dad. And if he goes forward with it, perhaps document (twitter or a blog) the journey - the ups and the downs and everything in between. It could be cool to see him share some wisdom with the younger generations along the way. I think he'd find that community would rally around him too. All the best!
Re:Teclis – Non-commercial web search on Thursday March 24, 2022 @12:23PM (#30792069)
you.com is worth checking out
I know people who've done it. One person I know did 3 stints at the same company.

I almost returned to a prior employer and was in final discussions before accepting a different opportunity.

A good lesson to never burn bridges when you leave.

Re:If Google sucks then why is everyone still using it? on Friday March 18, 2022 @08:03PM (#30729282)

Love The Economist. I have a subscription.
Re:Things you notice when you quit the news (2016) on Tuesday February 22, 2022 @01:50PM (#30431873)
I haven't watched TV news in 6+ months now and don't intend to. I still read the news, but much more so blogs and writers on Substacks. I've subscribed to a bunch. I do like primary sources too.
Re:Tell HN: I let my 6-year-old daughter design my website on Wednesday February 16, 2022 @06:10PM (#30367136)
This is awesome! thanks for sharing
Demand seems high. A lot of opportunity and for remote too.
Re:Ask HN: What Books Do You Recommend Reading for 2022? on Wednesday February 16, 2022 @04:42PM (#30366139)
Atomic Habits if you haven't read it. I re-read it at the beginning of the year.
Been using you.com for 2 months now. Great for tech queries. I'll be honest - I wasn't into the layout at first but now I really like it. Great stackoverflow results.
Re:Ask HN: What do you have for breakfast? on Wednesday February 16, 2022 @03:24PM (#30365202)
2 scrambled eggs, one slice sourdough toasted in a pan with butter. Water + coffee.
Re:Google Search Is Dying on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @04:41PM (#30353167)
Agree - it's deteriorating. And that's probably why we've seen a bunch of upstart engines appear like kagi, you.com, several others.
Re:Ask HN: What's your learning strategy? on Sunday February 13, 2022 @12:58PM (#30323821)
I use notion. I have one doc that's built out as a learning framework. I categorize the different areas I'm learning about. As I come across an insight (blog, tweet, book, news article, podcast), I put a link and some quick notes about it in there. Then, I take time on the weekend to go through and synthesize and pull out the signal. I'm also fortunate to be in a relationship with someone who's into learning just as much as I am. We talk about these things.
Re:Ask HN: How do you stay physically active? on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @11:13PM (#30282382)
Time block on my calendar for physical activity. I lift weights, walk, and run.
Re:Does DoorDash jack up prices even if your on a subscription? on Wednesday February 02, 2022 @04:44PM (#30184477)
I noticed this too. Other day the restaurant slipped me a QR code in my bag to just go direct through them and save money. I checked and it's about $1+ for each item on DD versus the restaurant.
Re:Ask HN: Burnout at 20, How to Recover? on Wednesday February 02, 2022 @04:39PM (#30184434)
My recommendation:

Take some time off and really unplug.

Invest in a hobby/activity outside of work that makes you happy. For me it's lifting weights. I wasn't always that way - a doctor recommended that I do that in my mid-20s when I was going through serious burnout, bad diet, poor sleep and stress. It helped me having that outside outlet.

you.com. Been using it for technical searches and some other searches.
Better technical searches is why I've been trying you.com
Agree, that was my thought too. They seem to come back a few months into a job.
