News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

JCordeiro

This was exactly my take-away after reading through this list.

Industrial safety inspections done by robots and affordable, modern zero-energy homes are the kind of difficult real world problems that will make the world a better place when solved.

On the other hand, I don't know if glass-by-glass wine delivery or another college social network are solutions to real "problems" that needed to be solved.

Now of course, it's still early for a lot of these startups and I can be proven wrong. But the potential impact of a something like a smart oven with a companion subscription meal service seems really small compared to an idea like a marketplace for farmers in India to sell directly to institutional buyers

I wonder if an effective method would be to apply some sort of "shadowban" on the Twitter accounts instead of closing them.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing :D
Re:An optimal portfolio of pokemon on Tuesday June 16, 2015 @11:09AM (#9726335)
This is very cool! One thing I noticed though is "a pokemon master can only have 5 pokeballs (prisons for pokemon that you can carry around)". However, (at least in the video games) a pokemon master can actually carry with him a party of 6 pokemon.

and Google Maps
This is a very cool project. Turned out nice!

Nicely done! I've always wanted to build something like this, and have never gotten around to it. I can't imagine it would have ended up as good as this.
I agree! I'll look into adding this in eventually. Thanks for the feedback!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for giving it a try!
Thanks for the feedback. I have to plans to make the match ups closer (explained in my other comment to rollo_tommasi), but I like the idea of scaling the difficulty based on the score.
I plan to implement this soon. Right now each country is chosen randomly. What I have in mind is to sort the countries by population and choose the first one randomly. Then, choose a second country that is random, but within a certain distance from the first one. i.e. within 10 or 20 spots on the list. Hopefully this will ensure closer match ups.

I really like the design of this site.
This is a perfect example of a very simple idea that makes for an awesome, handy site.
Re:You are dangerously bad at cryptography on Monday May 27, 2013 @02:19PM (#5775830)
The thing with cryptography is that you have to get it right every time. The person trying to crack in only has to get it right once.

It's these sort of things that make technology feel like magic.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. I'll check out repo.js and make sure to tweak those hover underlines.

Show HN: MY First Ever Wesbite

Over the past couple of weeks I've decided to learn more about web technologies and I've taken the time to build myself a personal website. This is the first website I've ever built, and I would appreciate some constructive criticism and honest opinions from you guys: http://joncordeiro.com/Thanks!

Re:New PlayStation 3 Hack May Be One That Sony Can’t Stop on Saturday October 27, 2012 @08:37PM (#4707728)
That's true. Software is definitely more expensive in other parts of the world. I was just thinking from the North American point of view. Thanks for bringing up a good point.

Videogames are at the cheapest they've ever been. In previous generations some games cost as much as $100, and in the cartridge based eras games rarely cost as low as $60 as they do now. And we're talking in 2012 dollars, which are worth much less that 1995 and 2000 dollars.
Re:New PlayStation 3 Hack May Be One That Sony Can’t Stop on Thursday October 25, 2012 @05:54PM (#4699748)
This is bad news for PlayStation fans :( The easier it is for people to pirate games, the more people who will pirate. The more people who pirate games, the less moneys the developers make. This is how studios get shutdown. Sony's closed at least 3 first-party studios just this year.
I like the way you outlined your skill levels using progress bars. I've always found it tough to describe how good you are with a certain programming language. Saying "proficient with Java, PHP, etc... doesn't really attest well to your skills.
Re:When Facebook Insiders, Employees Can Sell Stock on Tuesday September 04, 2012 @07:47PM (#4477116)
With Zuckerberg pledging not to sell a single one of his shares during the next year (http://goo.gl/XkPk1) maybe some of Facebook's employees will be convinced to do the same?
This is lame by ABC.

Starting A Tech Company And Starting A Band Are Pretty Much The Same Thing

I have to agree with the Woz. Even as an iPhone user, it is easy to admit that Windows Phone's UI is amazing.

Thanks a lot for this reply. I just checked it out and it seems great! There are a ton of cool classes on this site.
