You mean "concealed flaws"?
Re:What 81,000 people want from AI on Thursday March 19, 2026 @02:31AM (#47435681)
Oh no
I'm intrigued but also very confused on what this is about. Posting so I can looking into that later
Lending and banking in general is a highly regulated market so they do have to underwrite and do anything in their power to avoid lending money or start contractual obligations with people that are bad creditors. Source: worked for them for 2 years.

Thanks for sharing. Just one note: as someone who doesn't know who Mario Bekes is, this whole piece reads a lot like an Ai supported (borderline generated) piece. I literally gave up on the third paragraph.
Either this is written by AI or someone with a similar level of empathy. This said, there's little to be known about the methods they use to assess people, but if it follows the trend, it definitely isn't close to being fair, honest, transparent or even human-like. Even more so when it comes to helping managers by using an AI conversation tool to simulate scenarios. It is another corpo BS that is polished to look like they care about people (with respect to the local laws). But otherwise I'm pretty sure this won't help make MS some sort of high performing company.
Re:The Lost Towers of the Guelph-Ghibelline Wars on Tuesday March 25, 2025 @03:52AM (#43468886)
Someone did look into exactly that. There is no supporting document regarding the actual height. And it does look like it is exaggerated for impact purposes. So they did have towers, they were clearly higher than the rest of the other buildings... Might have been this tall? Maybe. Or maybe not.

I have reached a point in my crusade to kill Technical Debt. As many have stumbled upon this, I share my experience to set a milestone in the achievement of this goal.

Thanks, but I'm still missing how I would properly diagnose myself. These symptoms might be all too common ... Anything more reliable?

Re:Ask HN: Does the Framework laptop stand the test of time? on Wednesday January 01, 2025 @05:15AM (#42565121)
I pre-ordered my 13" with an i7 in late 2021. As a long-time Linux user, the experience has been very plug-and-play with the installation, and everything has been working as expected.

During these years, I ended up opening the laptop multiple times: - upgraded the monitor hinges: this was a major annoyance when travelling. - went through support to get the mobo repaired/swapped as one of the ports broke for whatever reason - ended up moving to AMD mobo, while increasing RAM and SSD simultaneously. - I bought the Coolermaster case for the i7.

Overall, all of the above happened as advertised. I enjoyed putting my hands on it, and to be honest, the engineering quality that went into it still impresses me.

There are a number of issues that I still find below grade but don't really bother me: - the speakers are definitely not great, I saw there is an upgrade available for them, will look into it, still not my primary use. - the original monitor was glossy, so ended up with an anti-glare screen cover. I now see that you can also have a matte version and one with bigger resolution, never been an issue, but interesting to see. - the fingerprint scanner is a bit jiffy, but I figure this is mostly a linux issue. - the battery was a major downside at the beginning under the i7, but right now I don't see it being an issue, at least under AMD: I get a good amount of hours and playing a movie on battery is something I can do without issues, draining just a few percent off it. (I'm currently running tuned and tuned-ppd if you want to know).

I'm very happy with it mostly, if not exclusively due to its upgradability and linux support. I only wish there was more competition in this sector.

Re:Isomorphic Web Components on Sunday December 15, 2024 @08:54PM (#42427343)
I might be nitpicking but, the transpiled version of React is the one that uses those standards. If you are thinking of trying to get a 5+ years old project working in a development environment you might effectively be out of luck.

To reduce the argument to a simpler one, this is effectively the difference between using vanilla js to build anything Vs using any abstraction over it that has a number of dependencies you don't control that are effectively a working solution of a dependency hell in a specific moment of time.

Re:Debian Stable and the Framework 16 on Wednesday December 04, 2024 @03:32PM (#42321733)
Similar experience. I tried to move to KDE and it was utterly disappointing with the external monitor. I've been using gnome with no issues whatsoever, if that's even something you're willing to try out

I only wish this website would be adapting to the viewport width. It's good awful to look at on mobile
I wish the article gave a bit more context on how he was caught. This seems like a major hit and I remember someone talking about AI generated music on Spotify by the few "authors".

While with this case the "fake artist" might have generated enough noise to be caught, I wonder how many are scheming and lurking in shadow.

Re:Big Companies vs. Startups (2015) on Thursday May 16, 2024 @01:51AM (#40375585)
I think you should be given the opportunity to try both, even better before you finish your studies (if that's the case).
Interesting take on the origin of the performance review bs, but I was hoping this would add something to the discussion.

In the current state of things the process is heavily defended by the HR department and most ICs want to have an "objective" way to be promoted and have a raise, when there's very little in this to be "objective", making it almost impossible to dismantle.

In more than 25 years in the industry, I haven't been once in a company that solved this conundrum and makes me want to quit being a manager.

A good book I've read that I can suggest if you're painfully struggling with this, is "Abolishing Performance Appraisals"

Oh that's great so we can finally train AI on what human generated content is Vs content to discard.
I even wonder if this can be reported to the whatever EU commission or group monitors and regulated data usage. I'm pretty ignorant on the matter.
This reads a lot like a potential load of money to be shoveled into "AI" once again. As someone else said, overall healthier environments are the best solution to the problem.
Cool and all... But a video would have been interesting as well.
Re:Performance Reviews Matter on Sunday January 14, 2024 @07:02PM (#38995787)
Seconding you here. This reads like a very shallow analysis of a much complex problem.

There's a good amount of data that suggests that we should indeed can performance reviews. The best approach here would be to start assessing and questioning the assumptions behind the "need" to have them. Like for example how fair (objectively) you think you can be when you're "evaluating" someone and not risking alienating the rest?
