Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with your brain not being “on?” on Thursday February 16, 2023 @01:13AM (#34815665)
Yes, and? People are different. There are Europeans who dream of living in the US, and Americans who dream of living in Europe. There are short people who wish to be taller and tall people who wish to be shorter.

We have investigated ourselves and found that we did nothing wrong.
You say this as if you assume poor whites are racist by default and the poor of the other races are "enlightened" by default.
Re:GitHub to Layoff 10% on Thursday February 09, 2023 @05:20PM (#34732482)
Why should a company be forced to continue to pay for employees they aren't in need of?

I believe they feel that their ideology is the ultimate force for positive change, and they become so lost in it that they are willing to do objectively wrong things under the rationalization that they're nuetralizing a threat to the idealogy.

Again, that's just what I think makes sense and personally believe. It's certainly possible I'm incorrect.

Im almost certain that they would have heavily tested and analyzed the balloon and its payload as soon as it got near the US to ensure that there were no unusual emmisions coming from it.
Re:Colombian judge used ChatGPT to make court decision on Saturday February 04, 2023 @12:01PM (#34655939)
Yeah I've seen a lot of people who seem to believe that the prompts they give ChatGPT aren't being cataloged and saved when they certainly are.

It sends every prompt you give it to a server, by design it has to as the model is far too computationally expensive to run locally.

> Many big corporations need to be counter-weight with some other big organization.

Such as labor boards, or rather the government that gives them power.

> Not to be rude but...

And then you proceeded to intentionally use rude and abrasive language.

You can disagree with someone and challenge their opinion without using phrases like "who gives a shit" and "let it go".

Ask HN: What's a *fun* technology to use for MVP's?

What do you all think a fun tech-stack/framework to learn and write an application with would be? Performance, productivity, etc all are secondary concerns, bonuses of course, but second to the joy of using the technology.I know this is super subjective, just interested in hearing what everyone thinks would be fun and why. I've got an idea for a relatively simple side-project and this feels...

Because young people don't die often, the requirement to be a "leading cause" isn't very high. According to the article Covid ranks 8th in causes of death with about 1,300 deaths in the 0-19 age range last year.

Not saying it isn't an issue, that's still 1,300 dead kids, but the headline seems (to me, at least) a bit sensationalized.

As someone who isn't too well versed on the topic, how are you so certain in your belief that all life is carbon based?
Re:Ergo: Erlang/OTP patterns implemented in Golang on Saturday January 28, 2023 @12:26PM (#34559490)
As someone without a lot of knowledge of GO and with only a trivial understanding of OTP/the gen_server impl, how would this add friction? What exactly is wrong with it and what would be a better alternative?
There are "plenty" of cold days as well. Does that disprove global warming?

Not only is "plenty" not an objective quantity, but even an objectively large quantity is irrelevant if it's not a large percentage of the whole. 100k geniuses with addiction problems wouldn't disprove the rule if there are 1b people with addiction problems who are of below average intelligence.

Nice! Thanks. Looks like my numbers were a bit off due to being out of date. To anyone who wants to know, currently the Swiss Big Mac is 35.4% more expensive than the US one.
A genius addict disproves the broader claim no more than does "it was cold today, therefore global warming is a hoax". The rule can be true yet still have notable exceptions throughout history.
You must be misremembering the price disparity. A quick Google shows that Switzerland is home to "the most expensive big Mac in the world"[1] at 6.50CHF. Almost double the US's average of $3.99.

Society doesn't need to change just because you don't like this specific sub-genre of joke. Romantic partnership, and subsequent occasional annoyance with said partner, is an almost universally shared human experience.
I imagine what they mean is that any time a politician speaks, they must adjust what they say to agree with core voter demographic if they want re-election. Perhaps if they spoke privately they could concede on certain topics and reach a middle ground, then plan a way for each to explain the compromise to their voters.

In a public forum people would likely view the compromise as one or both politicians "losing" and a mixture of ego and fear of not getting re-elected would prevent either party from giving ground and taking more measured approach.

You must not have gone out to eat much recently then. I'm on the road a lot and I'd estimate that over 50% of all restaurants I visit have a QR code menu.
Re:PSone.css – Playstation 1 style CSS Framework on Monday January 23, 2023 @07:23PM (#34497212)
Even without those arrows it seems very intuitive. It's just a subsection of the dpad with each button being an image that represents itself.

Maybe I'm just a weirdo but those icons seem perfectly intuitive to me.
I'd just want to stick around to see how things panned out, it'd be pretty interesting.

Re:Meta confirms it’s rescinded some full-time job offers on Wednesday January 11, 2023 @04:01PM (#34344747)
If I sign an employment contract I've likely already left a job for the sole reason of taking the job for which I've signed the employment contract. At the very least it seems to me as if ~2-4 weeks of the employees previous salary was lost when it could have been avoided.

Windows 11 is truly awful. Perhaps windows has always been a clunky mess and I din't quite realize it until I started using MacOS professionally, but I can hardly stand it. That said, I remember feeling Windows 10 was a notable degradation of UX, and Windows 11 only doubled down on that. Windows 7 is the last MS OS that I have any fond memories of, if it was announced that Windows 12 would be designed to more closely resemble that then I would seriously consider buying another Windows machine, until then I'll stick with my Macbook.

Ask HN: I achieved my dream of being a self-taught dev. I hate it. Now what?

Hey HN. I'm in a little pickle regarding my career and life choices and I'm not too sure what to do. I'd like to get some advice or perspective from others here. During my teenage years I worked fast-food/retail, with a bit of odd manual labor mixed in here and there. Then I joined the military and worked a physically demanding job while active duty. I did that for 4 years, all the while...
