Re:What is the business model for DuckDuckGo? (2017) on Tuesday June 02, 2020 @10:01AM (#23391060)
I prefer to splice them, personally, I like a challenge.
Re:What is the business model for DuckDuckGo? (2017) on Thursday May 28, 2020 @07:23AM (#23336027)
Not to splice hair, but Google isn't just "surviving", so the amount needed for DDG to survive is probably even smaller than that. They don't need to be as profitable as Google Search (which is much more profitable than the company as a whole) to do well.
Are we sure this isn't a false positive?
Re:Comparing HTTP/3 vs. HTTP/2 Performance on Tuesday April 14, 2020 @09:21AM (#22865555)
Indeed, the part that they illustrated with Pong does show that in environments where you lose packets or have to reconnect there should be a more noticeable advantage.
Re:Tesla X parts that had to be replaced after 400k miles on Sunday February 23, 2020 @09:22PM (#22401126)
Toyota Corolla keyfobs are like $400 CAD, last I checked.
Re:What Coronavirus Does to the Body on Thursday February 20, 2020 @03:26PM (#22378259)
It can be confusing to compare the mortality rate of cases in hospitals (which are be definition the worst cases) to the mortality rate of all infections (many of which never get to hospitals or get officially diagnosed). Gotta make sure we compare apples to apples.
Re:Nuclear power is the only green solution (2004) on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @08:42AM (#22180319)
Great (great!) podcasts about nuclear fusion reactors (the second one is an interview with a physicist at ITER, being built in the South of France):

Re:DuckDuckGo Search Improvements on Tuesday October 15, 2019 @01:33PM (#21261215)
I'd use the DDG iOS app if only the search field wasn't at the very top, out of reach in one-hand phone typing... It's terrible UX on anything but the smallest phones out there.
Re:Google Cloud Worth $225B, Deutsche Bank Says on Friday October 04, 2019 @01:06PM (#21159657)
It is, but that wasn't anticipated at the time and Amazon didn't reveal its margins until much later.
Re:Tumblr on Wednesday August 14, 2019 @04:57PM (#20699871)
This is exactly what happened. Verizon probably didn't know that most of the traffic they were buying were because of adult content, and then they killed that. I wish they had sold it to Pornhub instead.
Re:Market Moves Suggest a Recession Is Unavoidable on Thursday December 06, 2018 @03:00PM (#18621550)
Exactly. Every market correct feels like it's going to be the big one as its happening, and most of them pass.. By the time people start to feel like maybe it's over, market levels are usually well off the bottom and so everybody who wanted to "wait on the sidelines" miss their chance..
Re:Why Do Hospitals Hate Sleep So Much? on Wednesday December 05, 2018 @09:09AM (#18608261)
And it's a known biological fact that during teenager years the circadian rhythm is affected and normal sleep is pushed later in the night. Having teens wake up early is literally fighting biology and can't but have negative results on their health, education, socialization, etc.
Re:Why Do Hospitals Hate Sleep So Much? on Wednesday December 05, 2018 @09:07AM (#18608247)
Peter Attia (MD) had a podcast episode where he talked about being a resident and how it almost killed him (asleep while driving) and was bad for patient.

Also explained that the guy who created the residency program was a cocaine addict who rarely slept, and since then all doctors have to try to follow his crazy schedule for no good reason..

Seems like they should add a visible toggle switch that allows user to decide if they want the timeline algo to weight likes or not.

Hey Twitter, it's not bad to give users a little choice.

I love quality private labels. One more is good news. Competition keeps price low and quality higher. I buy a lot of Kirkland stuff at Costco, some Great Value stuff at Walmart, and increasingly more AmazonBasics stuff on Amazon.

My rule of thumb tends to be: Always try the cheaper private label at first, and only if it's not good enough do I move on to branded stuff. With most things, the private label stuff is just as good.

Re:Denmark to ban petrol and diesel car sales by 2030 on Wednesday October 03, 2018 @03:21PM (#18133845)
There are many other LCA studies, go find them. They all say similar things, and it makes sense when you think about how many gallons of gasoline or diesel a car can burn over its useful life (15-20 years).
Re:Denmark to ban petrol and diesel car sales by 2030 on Wednesday October 03, 2018 @12:47PM (#18132117)
If you look at page 29 of this LCA by Audi, you can see that they show an ICE car's impact at about 20% manufacturing, 80% usage, and around 1% recycling at the end of life:

Re:Denmark to ban petrol and diesel car sales by 2030 on Wednesday October 03, 2018 @12:45PM (#18132087)
All the Life cycle analysis I've seen (don't have the sources handy) have shown that the vast majority of an ICE's car's impact is from the fuel that is burned and not from production, usually around 80% driving and less than 20% production.
Re:Amazon is stuffing its search results pages with ads on Tuesday September 11, 2018 @02:40PM (#17962213)
"Amazon is stuffing its search results pages with ads "

Like Google, you mean?

Inertia is hard to fight. Sometimes all it takes is one player in a market doing it and then everybody else follows/feels they have to also to compete.

That's one reason why Tesla was such a catalyst for the whole industry and EVs. As long as nobody else was really making too much of an effort, everybody could just drag their feet.

Another option is skysails (giant kites that drag the ship forward):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkySails

Hopefully someday almost all ships have a mix of these things + maybe run on algae-based advanced biofuels or something like that.

Hyperbolic discounting is a very common way to be irrational. Humans are not very good at thinking long-term. Bezos became the world's richest person in part by extending his time horizon by a few years longer than most CEOs.
Re:Arm Announces Client CPU Roadmap For Laptops on Friday August 17, 2018 @10:41AM (#17783132)
Wouldn't Apple design the whole thing internally without needing help from Arm? They have a world-class silicon design team in-house.
Electric is more efficient/cleaner than that. You might not get the same range, but realistically, few people drive that far without stopping (biological needs, taking a break, etc), so that provides time for fast-charging.
The first place to phase it out of is densely populated areas, because of all the particulate matter pollution which is particularly bad for people's health:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5352477/

Burning it elsewhere might not help when it comes to CO2 emissions (though if it ends up being burned in a much more efficient engine/powerplan, at least you get more useful work out of it), but it can help a lot when it comes to health[1]. Diesel is particularly dirty, and burning it in densely populated areas should definitely be phased out. Long-haul trucking might make sense, but buses and garbage trucks should at the very least run on hybrid natural gas, until they are electric.
