Get Sketch. Seriously.
I just spent the last year of my life doing a 'proof of concept' and 'looking out for investors'. You'll spend your life always with a sense of insecurity drawn on by the fact that you don't have a real product.
Now, if your favorite Uncle is an investor and absolutely loves you, that's a whole different story. But realistically, make a product, find users who love it, then campaign for them by finding people to invest.
Otherwise you'll lose sight of why you're doing this.
Anything that I could do to supplement the course to make up for my disadvantage?
Just a thought: You should have a "tip jar" so people can show their appreciation where it counts.
Come on now, start a company when you've identified a problem that really needs a fix, and that has a huge potential of profit. A great way to find that problem is in a paid position. Starting a company for the sake of starting a company won't get you anywhere.
Honestly, it's all fun and games till the average consumer has the ability to buy it. The rest is just speculation.
I also don't want to discourage anyone from leaving their culture to try something new. It's an amazing truly eye opening experience.
Just be aware of the challenges you face.
Don't get me wrong, the international community is very accepting, even loving. But when you get to actual nationals, other than a few exceptions, you'll never be truly accepted.
Watch the move "Lost in Translation"
If you can deal with forever being isolated, even with friends, then by all means live overseas.
You will always be an outsider, no matter how acclimated you become. If you're ok with that, then you'll be fine.
Otherwise, stick to America, it really is an awesome country to live in.
Maybe I'm just blind and everyone is jumping into startups for no equity/salary. But in actuality, the startups out there offer realistic deals, if they don't, don't take the job. Simple as that.
One thing is for sure though, you're not going to get as good a deal at a startup as you would at a big company. There is a reason for that, you (should) have a possible big payout.
Now, if people are actually taking low paying jobs with barely any equity while the founders feast, I totally agree that's messed up.
Also, the Michael Jordan example doesn't apply. He would be like a Google employee that demands a higher salary, and because he's worth it, gets it. He was having "fun" playing in the NBA, so he stayed. If he went out to start his own basketball league that would be a different story.
Honestly I enjoy the thrill of working in a startup, if I didn't have fun doing this I wouldn't be doing it.
But in all honesty, there are people who worked hard and got pricey non-engineering degrees that are jobless.
If this article speaks to how messed up the startup life is, it also speaks to how spoiled we all are.
I mean, what's a perf score? Why does everyone bureaucratize everything?
We have such finite lives, why are we putting ourselves through this?
Join a startup, go freelance, take the pay cut and enjoy life.
You have a skill that is highly sought after, you'll find a job where you're happier, if you don't, move on.
I swear, I know of so many notable startups (that are real companies with real revenues, with real benefits, great locations) that are dying to have more tech talent.
What I'm saying is that if you're going to be miserable in your work place, move on with your life!
