Do I think that was her intention? No, I think that part spiraled out of control. Do I think this spawned from a PR person looking for the page views? Yes.
I wonder if you could re-create this whole debacle in 3 months with fake people; you could use your post-mortem to tell people that you faked them out and announce your startup PR firm.

It is not a scam per se; unless you deem investing, or taking risks a scam.
It wouldn't be per site fwiw, you could list an unlimited amount of domains for 7.99$/mo; consensus seems to be that a percentage is the better way to go though.
You already own the domain (ie it was for an old side project you never proceeded with), the 7.99 would be to host the landing page, facilitate the payment, and help getting eyeballs on your list of domains.

I am curious if there is a need for this; I personally have 20 or so domains I have purchased for random things over the years, but I probably will never use them. Selling them is a pain generally, and I know none of them are worth too much. Would there be demand for a site:1. setup a landing page listing your domains
2. verify all the domains with a text record
3. point all your domains to...
That is on the list, I am at the point where I can do that, and may do so next week; but say I get a bunch of people texting in (I am not so much worried about people texting the shirt honestly, I am fairly confident they will), what can assumptions can I make? Or is this a matter of "if people have fun with it, run with it?"
Did you have a tough time "getting" it on the initial look? My conversations with people have been:
me: check this out
person: its funny, but why would I want my number on a teeshirt?
me: well, its not really yours, it's an anonymous phone number you can forward to your cell, email, or set an auto-responder
person: OOOOHHH, thats pretty cool!
me: would you pay for it?
person: hrm..I am not sure, but I could see it becoming "a thing"
me: perplexed on whether to invest time and money into this.
I am not sure. I definitely think that restaurants/bars would like the idea; but I am not sure about consumers (hence the thread). I am pretty sure spring breakers etc, would like it, but I may be too far removed from that demographic (I am 31).
I have been working off and on on this for a couple months, and I think one last push over the next month should get it done. Is this just a novelty? I will have a bunch of out of pocket costs, namely initial inventory, and testing which designs sell if any, (how's my service? vs Do you think I am cute). Anyone have any suggestions on things, other than that landing page...its not great, I know.

Why does he have to compete with you? What if his goal isn't to work a 9-5, making a middling salary like most programmers? (hint: he never stated what his actual goals are). You do not need to be a smug programmer to make something that turns into a multi-million dollar business.

Hi,I work a 9-5, but I would like to eventually break off on my own, and help small/medium businesses implement devops/config management/automation etc. How did you build your pipeline of work? How personal/professional was your "website".
