Re:Arm-Based Laptops Will Make Up 13.9% of the Market in 2023 on Thursday November 10, 2022 @05:45AM (#33544704)
13.8% of it will be Apple Silicon.
Re:Elon Musk details his vision for a Twitter payments system on Thursday November 10, 2022 @05:43AM (#33544690)
Every body is doing payments. So I don't see how this could boost Twitter's profits. Probably a money sink because payments is hard and extremely regulated.

Twitter should focus on creating a market place for creators to sell digital goods to their followers or a way to subscribe.

They can put Substack into Twitter.

It's still amazingly difficult/unpredictable to deploy a simple node app with HTTPS enabled in 2022.

The best and easiest service was still Zeit Now v1 back in 2017. It has been made harder 6 years later.

Re:Ask HN: Who Invented CSS? on Monday October 31, 2022 @12:22AM (#33402037)
It's not that bad. What made is worse is that every browser is a little bit different and it needed to support mobile devices over time.
Re:I Played Facebook's VR Metaverse so you never have to on Monday October 31, 2022 @12:18AM (#33402002)
One reason Facebook's VR ambition might fail is that their entire culture has been built around social media, A/B tests, small optimizations, web, and a 2D interface.

From management to product teams.

They're now trying to create a fun 3D experience and they've utterly failed so far.

I feel as though a company like Epic or Sony or the Xbox team would be far better equipped to do so.

Re:Twitter engineers told to print out their code on Friday October 28, 2022 @11:13PM (#33380636)
Yea, sounds like BS to me. Imagine Elon reading code printed on hundreds of thousands of real paper from thousands of developers.

Makes no sense.

This is certainly true. The stagnation is what is causing low sales volume.

Every home owner in America has a 2 - 3% mortgage rate while today's rate is 7%. And they are sitting on equity gained during 0% interest era. There is no reason for sellers to sell. If they sell and buy again, they'll change their rate from 2-3% to 7%. No one is stupid enough to do that.

And buyers can't afford the massive increase in home prices during covid plus 7% mortgage rates.

So we have a stalemate. Hence, home sales keep on falling. The only group selling are institutional investors such as Blackrock or Opendoor because they need to free up cash.

Their record for this goes back to 2015.

As far as I know, home sales never collapsed by this much in the great recession. I compiled home sales data here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gVEXsjZjJaO3qtx4MI_W...

He is paying Tesla.
Re:Apple Q4/2022 on Thursday October 27, 2022 @11:58PM (#33367521)
It will be weaker because the M1 14/16 MBPs were eagerly anticipated. A chip refresh isn't going to have the same effect.

I think we'll see a big boost in Mac sales when M3 drops. It'll be on 3nm and should be a much bigger upgrade for M1 owners.

Mac Mini doesn't sell enough to matter much.

No, VR.
Re:Apple Q4/2022 on Thursday October 27, 2022 @05:36PM (#33364364)
Macs grew at 25% YoY (Apple earnings) while the PC market shrank by 15% YoY (IDC).

Apple Silicon is doing wonders.

Re:Amazon stock sinks 19% on weak fourth-quarter guidance on Thursday October 27, 2022 @05:34PM (#33364348)
I wonder how this affects Rings of Power budget. It cost $462m to produce season 1 and another $600m for the license and marketing.

Season 2 might have a much lower budget.

As both an LotR fan and a Prime member, I would have enjoyed a lower Prime membership cost than having to pay for Rings of Power.

Re:Meta stock sinks more than 23% on Thursday October 27, 2022 @10:28AM (#33357971)
Every report, rumor, public interviews from executives have pointed to a VR device in 2023.
Re:Meta stock sinks more than 23% on Thursday October 27, 2022 @10:24AM (#33357907)
I think Apple will come out with the best hardware.

Why?

1. Best mobile SoC designs by far. Not even close.

2. Hardware company at heart. Their culture is built for hardware.

3. Way more supply chain and mass manufacturing experience which means cheaper manufacturing.

4. Hardware designed for iPhone, iPad, Mac can be reused for VR/AR which means lower costs and more economy of scale. IE. M2 is used on both iPad and Macs. M2 cores are derived from A15 from iPhone 13.

Re:Meta stock sinks more than 23% on Thursday October 27, 2022 @10:22AM (#33357874)
I don't. I don't even own a VR headset. I tried the Quest Go or whatever it was called back in 2018. It was awful. I returned it immediately.

But I can see GenZ or the generation after GenZ embrace VR/AR. It doesn't have to be wearing a headset. It could be glasses when you're not wearing VR. It could be your phone when you're not wearing VR.

Re:Meta stock sinks more than 23% on Thursday October 27, 2022 @10:21AM (#33357830)
What they really want is to be the iOS and the App Store. They don't want to live under Apple and Google's roofs anymore. They want control. And they want to be the one taxing apps 30% instead of Apple and Google.
Re:Meta stock sinks more than 23% on Thursday October 27, 2022 @10:12AM (#33357703)
I personally think that the AR/VR will have a big market in the future. The question really is, how far away? 5 years? 10 years? 15 years? And will Meta be one of the winners when it's all said and one?

Meta is hellbent on creating a platform so they can be the iOS/App Store instead of just an app.

The stock is sliding because we're entering/in a phase where raising money is hard and cash is king. Companies are trying to pull back on investments and bets that might or might not pay off. Meta just told Wallstreet that it doesn't plan to pull back on Metaverse spending in 2023.
