Re:Ask HN: Review my web application on Tuesday November 25, 2008 @06:29AM (#376247)
Meh, the problem and it's solution isn't that original so I wouldn't scream ripoff just yet. Also The other site want's you to install an extension. In my personal experience (a while back so don't know current situation) it was a bit buggy, and the offline reading thing didn't work very well. With this you can have sort of the same (minus offline reading). I still prefer delicious (tag: toread or towatch) though, have to admit I'm a bit of a fan of the delicious site, so I'm not that objective.

Edit: How do you plan to monetize this service? Or is this more for fun?

Re:How (not) to get a job at a startup... on Wednesday November 12, 2008 @06:30AM (#361706)
So you need someone who has lots of ambition AND doesn't object to put in a lot of work AND get a low paycheck AND is SOL when your startup dies. Good luck in finding that person.
Re:How (not) to get a job at a startup... on Wednesday November 12, 2008 @06:22AM (#361702)
True, or to be laid off if you're considered 'too greedy'. Let's not forget your employers had this great idea and you should be happy to be honoured to contribute to that great idea. After all, you're jut a code monkey.

Or are poor.
Re:Black and white on Monday November 03, 2008 @06:21AM (#352038)
Tivo takes software under a free licence, redistibutes it, and takes every step possible you can't do the same thing. We see the same thing with some android handsets. Open source is freedom and creativity, we need to protect that freedom, if not, open source will die. Stallman understands this.

safe_mode... [shudder x 3]
Re:Rackspace acquire Slicehost on Thursday October 23, 2008 @05:50AM (#341041)
You can tell your customer rep that. I'm sure he will oblige.

They just want to talk to you to get everything set up like you want/need it.

How much memory does your server need? Need a backup solution? How bout an apc module? What are the bandwith requirements, do you need multi or single gigabit lines? Like I said, their business works more on a case by case basis instead of select a, b or c and proceed to checkout. I'm not saying you have to join them, but they're a good, solid serviceprovider.

Re:Rackspace acquire Slicehost on Thursday October 23, 2008 @04:37AM (#341022)
Well, they sort of build/manage stuff for you.

So when you ask for pricing information, you get a call from a account manager, who helps you find what you need and offers a price. For instance if you need a server to do your email there are a lot of options and solutions to choose from, managed server or exchange mailboxes.

Ofcourse at that moment they'll try to sell you some more, like file hosting, terminal services etc...

It's just not a plan A, B and C with options x y z company.

Re:"Macs are glorified Fisher-Price activity centres for adults" on Saturday September 27, 2008 @01:28PM (#317018)
"But don't Macs have a larger share of the 'technically-minded-user' / 'geek' (whatever) market than Wintel?" Not in my experience... do you have the data to back that statement up?
Re:Be a JavaScript Rockstar (jQuery site redesign) on Friday August 29, 2008 @12:28PM (#290166)
If the jQuery people, who produce this great framework at no cost AND under an open source licence, want to put flashing yellow polka dots in a marquee tag on their site, then that's fine with me.

If this disturbs you so much, then you have two options: don't use it or fork it. They won't loose a penny by you doing so.

Re:Any Benelux hackers here? on Tuesday August 26, 2008 @11:43AM (#287181)
Well, most people who live there know what it is. :-) Luxembourgeois: I met both of them, and they suck. Just kidding. It's true: our little brother is often forgotten..
Re:Any Benelux hackers here? on Tuesday August 26, 2008 @08:26AM (#286992)
I have no idea... Just wanted to check if there were some guys doing the same stuff we're doing. Maybe in the spirit of http://freehackersunion.org/joining.html

Actually I'm surprised the post got two comments.

Re:Ask YC: Have you ever made a demo (of demoscene culture)? on Monday August 18, 2008 @05:41AM (#279115)
Maybe because the demoscene is more connected to the computergame industry.
Re:I want to find a co-founder using only my iPhone. on Tuesday August 05, 2008 @09:57AM (#267444)
Why?
Re:Why Don’t Hotels Use Roombas? on Saturday August 02, 2008 @07:46AM (#264941)
They are bolted down.
Actually, slashdot manages pretty well. Considering the number of users they have. Their moderation system has matured over time. And the typical WTF, 'funny pics' and youtube crap that ruins other sites is isolated on http://idle.slashdot.org/ where it can harm no-one. I think it starts with comment moderation ( http://slashdot.org/moderation.shtml ). It's hard to get karma on /. by just fooling around, and you have to be a dedicated user to even get to moderate other comments. Contrary to digg where a sensible comment about X can be downmodded into oblivion by an army of 13 year old fanboys.
Re:Worst Idea Ever: SSHKeygen.com on Thursday July 10, 2008 @03:59AM (#242170)
Heh "It is your responsibility to secure your new key pair in transit." it's not even https. Funny!
The gpl explicitly allows you to charge for your software.
You USE (do) the software anywa. The gpl only limits distribution
Re:PDF becomes ISO standard on Thursday July 03, 2008 @06:36AM (#235076)
If you use the pdf creator software from adobe that may be the case, but that includes DTP software. I've been using pdfcreator ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ ) for years now. Works like adobe's distiller and does the job great.
