Re:Danish Government silently drops plan to dump MS Office on Sunday October 25, 2026 @06:31AM (#50230089)
China has been successful (I guess?) in switching to WPS for civil servants and state-owned companies employees. As long as you don't have to worry about 100% compatibility with MS Office, you have a lot of options. But if you are working with others using MS Office, you will get things like font issues in Word and Powerpoint, and financial models in Excel is just hopeless.
That's not what I said.
I can't say about the price (it is actually relatively affordable in China even without insurance), but my personal experience is: if your daily cost involves a significant amount of food and beverages, taking GLP-1 can offset some of that. I no longer have the constant craving for comfort food. Contrary to some other GLP-1 users, I still like my drinks, but it wasn't excessive to begin with.
I know, and I tried, but I just couldn't. I have every respect for those who can lose weight on their own through exercise and calorie control. It is just really hard for me. I was on a diet for half a year or so before quitting, and I actually lost probably 7-8% of my weight, but it had a detrimental effect on my mental health: every afternoon I was craving food so much that I couldn't focus on anything else. Knowing that this has to be long-term, it was simply not going to work.
I use GLP-1 to control my weight, which was obese according to the BMI before taking it. I don't really care about the other benefits that may or may not be true or relevant to me, but I am deeply convinced that controlling my weight is massively beneficial for my long-term health and completely overweighs all my concerns about side effects.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @02:11AM (#50114722)
I don't think this is true: drag increases with the square of velocity, so that's close to double the drag from 150 to 200, and I believe somewhere above 60/70 mph, aerodynamic drag starts to overtake road resistance as the main friction source, i.e. it takes significantly more horsepower to be able to do 200 than 150.
Re:All I wanted was a custom domain email on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @10:38AM (#50072458)
Purelymail (mentioned in the post) works very nice for me for now.
This is bs. It is admitedly difficult to become a Chinese citizen, but a huge number of foreigners work in China, especially in tech, higher education, etc. Also, Hong Kong is another good place to find a job if you want to increase personal exposure to China without having to learn Mandarin.
Of course it is not common at all, and my fear is probably very ill-founded and irrational. It's just the idea of dying from ... well, the raw form of randomness, scares me. I'm not scared of flying, for example, even though the pilot may very well f up, and they do f up from time to time. But if the pilot is throwing D100's for each flight, and if there is a streak of 50 1's, the next flight will be doomed - I won't be flying at all.
The scariest part for me is: it can just form randomly in one's body, and there's no way to tell until it's too late.

I definitely struggle at playing using artistic pieces. I had one set when I was a kid: it was so much more difficult to recognize patterns with its metal pieces: sometimes I even couldn't distinguish black from white.

But they were pretty as hell, and I absolutely loved it.

Plus, this sentence in the original post I replied to really struck me as absurd: "Content-neutral time, place, and manner restrictions aren't censorship".

Let's imagine a country bans the distribution of all writings by authors in another country/region disregard of the content. It would not be censorship according to the original post.

The fact that a ban encompasses a wide variety of content could mean simply that it is difficult/undesirable to limit the scope of the ban, but the censorship always originates from the content.

Re:AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible on Saturday September 19, 2026 @10:41PM (#49772085)
My take is most users (who generate these posters) are not aesthetically astute and/or care enough to put in more effort.
My point is - copyright is also a "content related" reason: some site is banned because the content of the site is infringing the copyright of someone else.

In the end, all censorship is content related. One could definitely argue along the spectrum of "all" to "none" censorship is appropriate, but I would guess most people actually hold the belief that "some" censorship is okay, while disagreeing on "which" censorship is okay.

If this is the case, then the bias problem is indeed relevant.

In China's case, it is a very well known and documented fact that heavy censorship is present. Of course if one thinks additional knowledge on that is useful enough to solicit wide user participation, that is certainly one way of thinking.
See "Spotify lawsuit" in the wikipedia article. Also:

"In January 2024, Italy's ... ordered major internet service providers (ISPs) in the country to block Anna's Archive due to a copyright complaint..."

"In March 2024, ... ordered major ISPs in the Netherlands to block Anna's Archive and LibGen due to a request by advocacy group BREIN (which represents the interests of the Dutch entertainment industry)."

"In December 2024, the UK Publishers Association won an order from the High Court of Justice requiring major ISPs to block Anna's Archive... under section 97A of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act."

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna%27s_Archive

They do not. But it is pretty pointless I would guess: probably most of the domains this tries to visit will be blocked.
Anna's Archive is prevented by some countries from visiting because of its (presumably illegal) content. All restrictions are based on its content.
Re:China's Regulators Take Aim at "AI Boyfriends" on Monday September 14, 2026 @11:34PM (#49707398)
Could be just China has a much higher population density. US cities sometimes feel like "ghost towns" in China to me...
I didn't have "replace" in my mind. I 100% agree with you that AI cannot replace human educators, but I am hopeful that as a supplementary tool, AI can achieve a lot.

On your point of MOOCs and YouTube lectures: I agree that the latter is sufficient for me, but there's nothing stopping AI from creating something similar, or even better: lectures tailored to my specific interests and needs. MOOC failed for me exactly because it wasn't "for me" - I might as well try and find a YouTube playlist.

These are all tangential, of course. I don't know how this specific thing would turn out.

This looks really bad.
May I ask why? If by "not the same" you meant: AI is not at the level of a good human educator, it is a fair argument - but not many humans can afford to have a one-to-one human educator either.

Perhaps I am a bit more optimistic, but if AI could give me, let's say, 90% of an average lecturer's capability, at 10% of the price or even less, that is probably extremely valuable. (For one, I would certainly be interested in learning new things that otherwise wouldn't make sense financially)

(1) An inmate is not allowed (essentially, by the society) a specific diet dictated by his/her belief; and, (2) A poor person cannot afford (essentially, because of the society) a nutritious and delicious meal dictated by his/her needs or wants.

What are the differences between them? Are there differences at all?

I'm guessing the person you're replying to meant the incremental cost of serving African customers is low.
