Ask HN: Management wants to talk to my Datalake. What's the best way to do this?

We’ve inherited a lot of data, now neatly organized in a Dremio Data Lake. Most team members use Excel or Power BI to access it. With all the excitement around AI, management (especially non-technical business units) are now asking for a chat-based interface to interact with this data and generate charts on demand—similar to the AI demos you see everywhere.I’ve pointed out that Excel Copilot...

Re:Show HN: Horizon – Private alternative to Imgur on Monday July 15, 2024 @10:11PM (#40973161)
I have always wondered how "hosting" sites deal with malicious actors, like sharing of copywritten stuff (like movies), xxx stuff or worse (cp).

Is there content moderation at the backend of Horizon?

How would you stop a Man-in-the-Middle attack in a Fantasy setting?

Inspired by The Wandering Inn's latest chapter, what would you do If you are the 5th Wall's Bastion-General? Assume you have all the resources that the Kingdom Rhir provides, the irregulars from the other kingdoms and the Champions that was isekai'd from Earth.Backstory [here](https://wanderinginn.com/2020/07/12/7-34-c/) and [here](https://wanderinginn.com/2020/07/15/7-35-c/), actual attack...

Re:The Race for a Zika Vaccine on Monday August 22, 2016 @03:51AM (#12334734)
Mosquitoes are the main food source of some animals, which leads them to die out. Then those animals are the food source of other animals, etc. etc..

Also, the male mosquitoes also pollenate some plants and flowers, which also negatively affects the ecosystem- only the females bite.

Ask HN: I want to create my own web gateway, where should I start?

I'm having a hard time finding resources on creating my own web gateway. It feels like I'm googling the wrong terms? I'm talking about the website that limits connectivity until a username/password is provided, usually found in Free WiFi Access Points.I'm a C# Developer, specializing on ASP.Net Web Api, if it makes any difference. Any help is appreciated, just point me in the right direction :)...

Ask HN: Gamedev, RPG Maker and A Maze Generation Problem

I have two questions for you guys here at Hacker News, I hope you guys don't mind :) (this is a x/post on r/gamedev)First, what are your opinions on using RPG Maker (which ever version; I'm using MV via Steam) as a game engine?I have to admit, at first it felt like a toy- not an IDE at all. I'm using it because real life is getting in the way right now, and I wanted to start developing this...

As a layperson, why would I use this rather than just open MS Word? Is there any benefit for me, considering I'm not writing Math?

Ask HN: How do you manage passwords across your team?

We're having a bit of trouble managing passwords while keeping it secure and reasonably convenient across our development team.We have tried a number solutions such as written notes on sealed envelopes with a logbook to access (our oldest 'system'), to an SQL database with a custom application, to a LastPass account with a shared master password. The passwords that we are trying to manage range...

Re:The Pixel Factory on Monday September 07, 2015 @07:16AM (#10180992)
Amazing! :D Learned a lot about pixels
This JS "library" contains one function:

> function fuzzysearch(r,e){var n=e.length,t=r.length;if(t>n)return!1;if(t===n)return r===e;r:for(var f=0,u=0;t>f;f++){for(var a=r.charCodeAt(f);n>u;)if(e.charCodeAt(u++)===a)continue r;return!1}return!0}

I mean.. come on, guys. This is getting absurd..

Re:The random number generator of DOOM on Wednesday July 01, 2015 @12:23AM (#9810056)
I hope I don't sound too dumb, but how does it work, exactly? It doesn't look random to me, more like an unordered (but repeating) sequence..
Looks cool. I don't know ruby though.. :(
