Its sad that we are reaching the point where a large swatch of he planet is affected by the same thing and we don't get much of an investigation

Re:Dragons When Folder Merging on macOS on Thursday April 18, 2024 @10:38AM (#40076767)
I would believe that many people don't know about this difference. And I would also think that many would consider this to be unintended behavior.

Dragons When Folder Merging on macOS

Something to keep in mind when using a Mac if you are from a Windows background is how merging folders operates differently. On Mac its a replacement operation in the most literal sense. There is no merging of folders. I created a 1 min video to demonstrate this user design dragon.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kO90AI7CHE

I'm imaging this used as a public listing of your online avatar information. So any chatbot can skip all the pleasantries and formalities of getting to know you.

Ask HN: What are the “lost arts” of our field?

I've been thinking a lot of the good old simple days of the internet and programming. Lots of technology and tools are killed now right out of the gate b/c of how powerful established players have gotten. Your hobby project to track bots on twitter, killed by an overnight API change. So I'm looking for a list of the "lost arts".For example, its near impossible to find documentation related to...

Re:What should a new OS have? on Thursday November 26, 2020 @11:59PM (#25225662)
The future operating system is one built from the ground up to serve only as a personal data warehouse. Collecting, protecting, archiving, and analysing your life's data in a private pragmatic ways
Thanks for pointing this out. I suspect this why Google agreed to store all the backup data of a competing company for free. Google would have had no interest in storing Facebook's end-to-end encrypted data for free unless it could read it and possibly resell it back to Facebook.
And marx taught us about false consciousness.
To add to the discussion, I haven't seen anyone mention that this will effectively give the police departments the ability to do surveillance without a warrant
I use glasswire which kinda some some of this. In addition to your list I would also be interested in setting up my homelab to monitor and detect rogue traffic that would have caught my phone doing what was described in the article.

Does anyone have any open-source suggestions for DIY deep-packet analysis?

Re:Windows XP Source Code Reportedly Leaked, Posted to 4chan on Friday September 25, 2020 @10:30AM (#24590143)
Does anyone know what version of the code was leaked? Was it the most current version of the XP, or a codebase from 2008?
Re:Federal Agencies Tapped Protesters’ Phones in Portland on Wednesday September 23, 2020 @02:14PM (#24570113)
A podcast called "It could happen here" from iHeart radio recorded in 2019 predicted this with startling accuracy. To be fair, its not hard to predict where this is all heading.
Re:India authorises sale of electric vehicles without batteries on Thursday September 03, 2020 @08:31PM (#24370499)
Can someone help me understand how this will help the adoption when they still have to buy the expensive batteries
For the people who don't know what this means. WeChat is saving the passwords of all its users in plaintext. Which means the company and their employees can see your password. Which means CCP could use this password to gain access to your other accounts
Re:Elon Musk calls for Amazon breakup on Thursday June 04, 2020 @03:47PM (#23420936)
I know the Overton Window has shifted, which will make what I'm about to propose sound even more crazy, but how about Nationalizing Amazon?

I'm curious if this means our sky survey of EMF radiation in space is also missing this band? I don't know our space telescope history and capabilities, but can anyone who knows more comment on whether or not we are missing this?
Re:Giant 3D wave sweeps over Seoul's Gangnam District on Thursday May 21, 2020 @09:32PM (#23267813)
I've seen news sites do this before but I don't understand why they don't have actual video or photos of what they are talking about. Does anyone know why they just included renderings of the art installation?
Note: This has not yet completed it's peer review.
