It seems like a really cool idea, I just can't see myself using it though with other locational based apps like 4square. Also, I'd look into twitter bootstrap for the site UI.
Reminds me of this. http://xkcd.com/732/ (Hover over the picture.).

Re:Ask HN: Review our redesigned Landing Page on Monday April 02, 2012 @06:02PM (#3790312)
Not exactly, most portfolio sites are well, just portfolio sites. We provide a recruiter aspect to it, that allows direct interaction with employers.
Re:Ask HN: Review our redesigned Landing Page on Sunday April 01, 2012 @02:27PM (#3784489)
Well, it's more like we don't want to reveal too much on the Employer side of things because:

1) The are more likely to contact us for information.

2) We're releasing more information as the product reaches completion, as we want to make sure we deliver what we promise.

Ask HN: Review our redesigned Landing Page

Re:Poll: What's Your Most Disliked Programming Language? on Saturday March 24, 2012 @08:50AM (#3749240)
Java, I was force-fed it in school. We actually had to develop web applications with it.

I wouldn't have cringed so much if I hadn't have been developing in nodejs and php prior.

Her point about why she wouldn't recommend other women to be engineers is completely overshadowed with her workplace woes.

I get it, she dislikes her office culture, but that doesn't explain why she'd pick such a gender specific title. I think it's a complete over-generalization to use her experiences in her field to warn other females. To be honest, it feels like a sympathy piece.

Re:No way I am calling you for a price on Thursday March 15, 2012 @08:32AM (#3708091)
On one hand I definitely agree that transparent pricing gets more customers, if your product isn't made for an enterprise level there is no excuse not to make the prices transparent.

With that being said, many software and web applications that use the "contact us for a price method" that aren't just vultures looking for your info usually need more information in order to price you properly. For example, the size of the company, your budget, your specific needs etc. may be needed to ensure that the company gets a fair specific price that caters to their needs.

Thing is, they could be doing random, unknown acts of kindness and you'd still be complaining they want the spotlght. Since they aren't publicized, you wouldn't know if they did.

But yeah, this backlash is pretty childish on both ends.

Re:Great, Another Bootstrap Site on Wednesday March 07, 2012 @03:49PM (#3677141)
As a web programmer I understand where you're coming from, but as a UX designer I whole heartedly disagree.

Bootstrap is a wonderful tool for getting your app out there without having to do much on a design level. But I believe that websites with a distinct look and easy UI that reflects their functionality is way better than a monotonous string of websites with no distinction between their design.

For instance Twitter's design is beautifully streamlined for it's functionality, which is to show a constant flow of micro-information. As opposed to HN's listed threads which show link based data. These designs even though they differ seem "natural" based on their functionality and require little to no mental effort.

Good UX does not require mental effort.

Furthermore, a unique look is how others identify sites. It's Twitter's UI looked exactly like Facebook's, more would have trouble distinguishing the two. This would hurt the site's capability to make an impression in the user's memory.

With no distinction between websites, how will the casual user remember you?

Ask HN: How do you develop your weekend projects?

When looking at various HN "Weekend Projects", most are so well made I sometimes contemplate how the developers can organize and polish their project so well over the span of a weekend. So I became curious on how the HN community approaches developing their weekend projects. What are some of your individual approaches?

Ask HN: Including a demo with your pitch email. Good or Bad?

Hello, Recently I've been emailing local VCs with accelerator/partner programs (With only "contactus" and no application forms) in order to apply. The mail was the standard small bit a of background about myself, a paragraph pitch about my start-up and a meeting request where I told them that I can show off a detailed demo of my start-up.The only reason I don't attach the demo into the email is...

I don't know much about law school, so bare with me if this sounds far-fetched.

Have you considered trying to offer legal consulting as a service, especially for start-ups?

I mean it cant hurt as a side job to pay the bills.
