Depends on where you live, but here in Canada, PiShop (https://pishop.ca) usually has 4B kits in stock. I haven't seen single boards being available for a long time though.
Just make it hibernate after X time (2 hours for me). There a repo of scripts on github (https://github.com/lightrush/framework-laptop-formula) where you might find information on how to do it. I'm sure it's not a 1 to 1 port to Arch, but it might get you started. Just note I had to disable secure boot for hibernate to work.
I can vouch for the Framework. It doesn't feel beta at all. I'm running Xubuntu 21.10 on it an it rocks. Someone created a repo with salt scripts which works all the kinks of the laptop under Ubuntu. The only thing I needed it for was to fix the touchpad issue after resume from sleep (it would be at max acceleration) and to enable hibernate (just note that you must disable secure boot first). https://github.com/lightrush/framework-laptop-formula

Actually, it probably isn't that bad if it's well balanced. I own a Meta Quest 2 and I added an external battery at the back of the headstrap because it helps balancing the headset while playing, preventing it from dropping on my nose too much.
Re:Show HN: Simula One – Portable Linux VR Computer on Wednesday February 23, 2022 @09:38AM (#30441426)
I see people have issues with the price tag, and while it is by no mean cheap, since it's actually a full blown computer AND a VR headset all in one, it is somewhat justified. The computer specs match my Framework laptop and the headset is, on paper, on par or better than other high-end VR headsets (and a miles ahead of my Meta Quest 2 and other consumer-grade VR headsets).

Will try that for sure. Thanks!
Re:My First 80 Days of VR for Exercise on Saturday February 19, 2022 @08:44PM (#30402428)
The stock headset definitely needs to be upgraded for this kind of application.

I own a BoboVR headband with an external battery, which helps balance the weight of the headset. I had the elite strap with external battery and the BoboVR is much more comfortable for me. It’s also leatherette instead of foam, so much easier to clean.

I also have a fan (BoboVR F2) attached to the face mask in order to prevent condensation and overall I get a great experience even when I drip of sweat after exercising.

Re:My First 80 Days of VR for Exercise on Saturday February 19, 2022 @08:39PM (#30402402)
I do pretty much the same thing. I own a Quest 2 and I play Pistol whip, Thrill of the fight and Moon rider (a free VR game which is played in the browser where you need to hit blocks with your hands synced to music).

The only issue I have with Thrill of the fight is that when I get into it, I hit hard, but find no resistance as I would hitting a punching bad or sparring with someone, so my elbow tends to overextend and I feel some pain for a couple days after playing for about 30 minutes. That’s something that will probably get better over time as I gain more control, but as of now, that’s something I need to be careful of.

Re:Framework Raises $18M Series A on Tuesday February 01, 2022 @01:22PM (#30166806)
I'm running Xubuntu on mine and it works fine. Battery life goes down pretty quick when sleeping, and battery life is definitely lower than Windows, but I can still get 4-5 hours of actual work on it.
True, my bad, read the exact opposite.
This is electrostatically applied, a bit like powder coating from my understanding, so yeah, it probably won’t work on drywall.
Re:Ask HN: Do you still miss your RIM BlackBerry? on Tuesday September 14, 2021 @12:03AM (#28520067)
I used to own a BB Z30, which I bought after my q10 developer édition began having issues, and to this day I still think this is the best phone I ever used, primarily because of the BB OS. I had only owned iPhones before that and have owned both Android and iPhones since then.

Really? I completely missed that feature.... thanks for the tip!
At a certain point, people get in this so deep that it becomes a religion, and unfortunately logic doesn't help in these cases.

My personal favorite psql command: \e, which is used to edit the query currently being written or the last query run in your preferred editor.
Re:Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com on Thursday September 17, 2020 @06:50PM (#24510907)
Hey Ted,

Is there a way to migrate a bunch of domain names from Godaddy to Namecheap ? We own about 200 domain names and I would like nothing more than to drop Godaddy for Namecheap, but I cannot justify the manpower (basically just me) required to migrate domains one by one.

Thanks.

Noob question here: Since, if I get this correctly, all these changes will require new pilot training, why is the MCAS still needed?

My understanding was that this system was installed in order for the new plane to behave exactly like the old one therefore not requiring costly additional pilot training.

Re:Logitech MX Master 3 vs. 2S Teardown on Tuesday December 17, 2019 @03:53PM (#21818705)
I still use 3 MX518s. One in my backpack, one at home and one at work. They’ve been used and abused for the past ~ 13 years and although they‘ve got some visible wear, they work as well as the day I bought them.
Re:Ask HN: Feasible Alternative to the MacBook Pro? on Sunday October 20, 2019 @12:08PM (#21304986)
I might be an outlier in the dev community, but I’m on my second Alienware 15" laptop running Ubuntu + Xfce and I really love it. It’s fast (my current laptop has an i9 in it), reliable, offers multiple possibilities for extensions and the new M form factor does pretty good when it comes to bulkiness.

Of course they are bigger than an XPS 13, but if you are like me and mostly work from office and home, it’s not really an issue.

Ho and it’s gaming-ready too (got a gtx2080 in my current laptop).

My previous laptop before that was the first gen of retina MBP (2012) and the only thing I miss from it is the almost double battery life I had over the Alienware.

Couldn’t you submit the app with a different name such as VLC vNext ? This would allow people on v2 to keep using it and bring v3 to the store ?

It’s a major release after all, so breaking changes are to be expected.

Re:Remote code execution in Asus router firmware on Monday January 12, 2015 @06:14PM (#8877109)
DD-WRT allows you to do this using its QoS service. You can specify rules by range of IPs or by MAC adresses, so this definitively is possible.

You can also set rules regarding specific groups of services (games, torrent, netflix, etc.).

If you want a more powerful way to control your bandwidth, DD-WRT has iptables installed, which can be configured by connecting to the router through SSH. The possibilities using iptables are pretty much limitless, but there is a level of complexity that is completely abstracted when using the QoS service.

For more information, see:

Re:Remote code execution in Asus router firmware on Monday January 12, 2015 @06:06PM (#8877067)
I've been a DD-WRT user for many years now. I have considered the other options before installing DD-WRT on the N66U (which I received just after Christmas), but none of them were offering significantly better functionalities over DD-WRT for what I needed, so I just went with what I knew worked well.

I have 2 routers running DD-WRT (RT-N66U as my main router and TP-WR1043ND as a wireless bridge) and it works like a charm.

Re:Remote code execution in Asus router firmware on Monday January 12, 2015 @03:30PM (#8876230)
Running DD-WRT v24 sp2 on my N66U here. It works like a charm and you can customize the OS all you want since it's Linux-based.

Re:iPhone 5 with iOS 7 randomly shuts off on Thursday January 23, 2014 @12:52PM (#7109760)
I had a similar issue with my 4S where it would shut down when battery got down to around 30%, and only boot up if I reset it (normal boot would show the battery discharged icon) after using it for about a year.

Doing a full charge cycle of the battery (fully charge -> fully drain -> fully charge) fixed the issue.
