100%. I've been combating burnout over the last year or so. A saying that has stuck with me recently is "you don't need to set yourself on fire to make others warm." Trying to fix things by yourself in a massive bureaucracy is nigh impossible, so I've resigned myself to stop going the extra mile for the sake of the health and wellbeing of myself and my family.

Huh, fun coincidence! I just pulled this article as a WikiGacha card recently.
This is the first I've ever heard of this.

Looks like it's licensed CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. Cool. Might be a fun read, might be a waste of time. I try not to dive into conspiracies after having wasted so much time on them in the past.

By not giving their customers business. Unfortunately I am forced to interact with their customers (i.e. governments, schools, utilities, etc.).
Voting with your wallet doesn't exist. Try to boycott Amazon by blocking the AWS IP ranges and see how unusable the internet becomes for everyday tasks. Corporations continue to push the personal responsibility narrative so they can externalize costs of unethical business practices.
If you don't think lying/tricking/manipulating people is abusive, then you might want to reflect on that.

Reading their about page...

Yeah, no, fuck that bigoted bullshit and the people who made it.

They also sell a license with the new hardware. The bulk majority of the public never buy hardware without an OS. So yes, they are making more money with each new hardware sale. Plus the increase of forced advertising means they make more per user, effectively double dipping.

Why do you feel the need to defend a convicted monopolist for engaging in user hostile behavior?

As an American, we deserve the derision. Please, continue shaming us, maybe some day people will get sick enough of it to try to prove them wrong.

That's probably asking too much, though.

ACCount37 expressly left out the coal smoke stacks from their description, so I'm not sure why you chose to focus solely on that and throw it back in?

Re:Bluesky Goes Dark in Mississippi over Age Verification Law on Saturday August 23, 2025 @09:01AM (#44995674)
Edit: I mistook the bsky.sh domain, my bad. Can't get strike through to work for the life of me. I give up.

~~Bluesky blocked in Mississippi, try to work around it, only for the resource that tells you how to do this to be hosted on Bluesky, which is blocked. That's... suboptimal~~.

I can't help but feel like Bluesky is just three corporations in a trenchcoat pretending to be an open federated ecosystem.

Sounds like a failure to properly build a threat model. Consider relocating your instance and begin using privacy mitigations like VPN.

Much cheaper than an attorney.

Re:Bluesky Goes Dark in Mississippi over Age Verification Law on Saturday August 23, 2025 @08:29AM (#44995509)
In theory, but is that actually the case today? I couldn't find any information about the current state of federation for Bluesky.

Contrast this with Mastodon which already has a vibrant federated ecosystem.

A.K.A. Axon Enterprises. Some OUI databases have the new name, some have the old.
Direct action against manufacturers. You don't have to be a wizard to cast fireball.
Re:Gandi March 9, 2025 incident postmortem on Monday May 05, 2025 @09:39AM (#43895008)
One could argue the polish of their UI/UX is worth it, but not to me. I moved to Porkbun and found the difference a bit frustrating when trying to migrate from Gandi, but that was one time pain.
I wonder what this would cost to have done. I have a relative that was left paralyzed after a spinal cord injury, would love for them to be able to try something like this.

Edit: looks like it has to be a pretty recent injury... "14-28 days prior"

For either, if the papers don't stand up to peer review and meta-analysis then yes, we should ignore them. Don't often see papers from think tanks engaging in actual science though....
A lot of good that's doing. Big tech was sitting front row for the inauguration.

Americans have way more faith in America being the good guys than is warranted.

It most certainly is abused that way. See every garbage DMCA takedown request submitted by scumbag corporation du juor.

This doesn't even take into account the endless lobbying by Disney to pervert copyright law into what it is today.

Re:The Toyota Prius Transformed the Auto Industry on Saturday January 18, 2025 @11:21AM (#42749400)
My friend's Jeep will give them a notice that it needs to switch to gas when it hasn't been used for a while, so it seems like a pretty common thing across manufacturers.
Re:Using ChatGPT is not bad for the environment on Saturday January 18, 2025 @09:51AM (#42748768)
Is that actually a common configuration? I could find very little on data centers being cooler by river water, and the few I found sounded like they were doing something novel.
Re:Using ChatGPT is not bad for the environment on Saturday January 18, 2025 @09:10AM (#42748434)
Redistribute the tax back to the people. That way you're eliminating the price externality but offsetting the cost to individuals. The fossil fuel industry can't continue to plug their ears and ignore the costs associated with putting more and more carbon in the atmosphere. We need to hold them to account.
