Re:Ask HN: Aren't you afraid of a possible world conflict? on Tuesday November 26, 2024 @05:58AM (#42244581)
I try not to worry about things that are not up to me. I will die at some point anyway.
I wonder if the hidden bear will remain on the logo

Re:Reversible and Irreversible Decisions on Sunday October 30, 2022 @04:00PM (#33398064)
I use this model a lot in life. I like to remember about this when in arguments with someone - once you say something that you later regret, it's very difficult to take it back.
Re:Ask HN: What's happening with Gmail spam filtering? on Wednesday September 21, 2022 @10:07AM (#32925363)
Yes, several phishing emails got through to my gmail in the last couple of weeks, which never happened before

Re:Tutors / tips to change your English accent on Sunday August 07, 2022 @08:43AM (#32376049)
Write down a list of words that you do not pronounce as you want. Record yourself reading them out loud, listen back to it and try to say it better next time. You can also create some sentences from those words and read them.
He could start taking finasteride/propecia. If he was getting a hair transplant, he would have to take it anyway so his hairline doesn't recede further behind the transplanted hair.
Cure already exists - finasteride
Re:Shopify to lay off 10% of workers in broad shake-up on Tuesday July 26, 2022 @09:24AM (#32237930)
What I don't get about these lay-offs, is that these companies usually start hiring again soon after
Re:Ask HN: Why do I struggle to follow corporate meetings? on Wednesday July 06, 2022 @02:35PM (#32004979)
Pro-tip: if you have to say something in a meeting, but you don't know what to say, just ask "what's the timeline on this?"
Re:Understanding how others relate to you on Sunday July 03, 2022 @07:15PM (#31971822)
I think this model is over-simplified and not useful. The main problem in my opinion is that it's one sided.

A good question to ask would be what is your label in how you relate to someone else - I think almost no-one would label themselves as a 'Shapeshifter' or 'Hater'. Even if you didn't like someone, you wouldn't say that you are a hater, but you are being rational in your dislike for them.

Re:Understanding how others relate to you on Sunday July 03, 2022 @07:11PM (#31971806)
Some models are useful, but this one isn't. I guess you can just label me as a 'Hater'
Re:What should you do with stock options during a recession? on Wednesday June 15, 2022 @06:12PM (#31760102)
I would just hold it - I have sold most of my index fund holdings in the past 6-9 months and been just holding cash. I don't think stocks have reached the bottom yet, so holding cash at 0% return is still better than negative returns from stocks. Right now, it's about not taking losses. I also don't see the market and economy rebounding quickly after reaching bottom - they will stay flat for a while IMHO

A lot of negative self talk that I think you should work on improving. Try CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) - you can do a lot of it by yourself

>Unfortunately, I have never been a rockstar programmer

>I've already wasted my entire teens and 20s

Those are all biased opinions. You can take a break from work, but by itself this will not change the way you think

Re:Ask HN: How do you handle boredom? on Monday May 09, 2022 @05:28PM (#31320009)
You cannot defeat boredom just like you cannot defeat your shadow. You can only embrace it

I've never heard of Alex Hormozi, but from googling it looks like he is a typical youtube guru selling scam courses on how to get rich. Seriously, I wouldn't listen to anything that he says.
Re:Study conspiracy theories with compassion on Saturday April 02, 2022 @09:49AM (#30888269)
That's why I think conspiracy theories can be a threat to democracy. They try to convice people that the free and open societies that they live in, are actually not free and open. Some of them can be right (e.g. Snowden leaks), but personally I think what we currently have is better than the alternatives. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
Re:Study conspiracy theories with compassion on Saturday April 02, 2022 @08:47AM (#30887812)
Let's say that you live in a democratic country, where over hundreds of years you regularly hold democratic elections. One day, a new presidential candidate says that if he wins, he will turn this country into a totalitarian state - this country will never have another democratic election and a chance to vote him out. 51% vote for him and he wins. Is that fair or a loophole in democracy?

A lot of conspiracy theories these days are anti-West and anti-democracy.

> For most of the time no one will thank you for doing something that way

That's still would be a good outcome. More likely, is that conspiracy theories would appear about that person's work and they would start facing abuse.

You could cure cancer, and there would be a number of people who would hate you for it.

You just can't make everyone happy.

Re:I let a baby bird nest in my hair for 84 days on Friday March 25, 2022 @08:40AM (#30801417)
From the headline, I imagined that for 3 months she carried a nest made of wooden branches on her head. Very disappointing that it wasn't the case.
Balls are very fragile though
I think for many people the definition of boring is:

- anything that I don't understand

- anything that forces me to think
