It does smell like AI. The one bit that gave me pause was "Thank you again, I do hope that this issue is resolved quickly." AIs don't usually do comma splices. Maybe it was AI with light human editing.

So then you have a connection going one way (freezer to data-logging endpoint) and not the other.

The current state of "Hacker" News, where suggesting someone actually write code is seen as like suggesting that the injured walk to the hospital.

The main use cases for AI: fakery, deception, and making money off the back of real human creativity.
In a contest between the "supercharge my education and skill development" use and "let me be as lazy as possible" use of AI, it should be pretty obvious which will win out at the end of the day.

What a waste. All the anticipation that used to be built up with previews and looks into the dev process, now flushed down the toilet so billionaires can flood the web with crap and make more billions.

Other AIs, of course. AIs all the way down.

It has been going downhill for quite some time. The more recent flood of AI bots and now this change may be the last two nails in the coffin.
Award-winning writing has all kinds of different styles. The average of them will probably get you some boring median soup once again, though maybe a bit less bland than the LLMs trained on oceans of LinkedIn and Reddit slop.

Spain didn't even have high-speed trains until the early 1990s so I don't think that's the case here.

I have a coworker who used AI to generate music for a funeral using prompts with facts about the life of the deceased. (He just mentioned this offhand one day like it was no big deal.) I guess he "saved money" by not hiring a human musician.
I really, really wish I were making this up.
Re:AI is ruining haunted houses

In this case I think part of the "bad" was the clear lack of care shown by leaving in the AI "brand" in the end result. "Slop" is a perfect term to apply there.

When I took my daughter to a birthday party the other weekend, the playplace where the party was held had multiple party rooms, each with a large themed mural covering the walls. We were in the "dinosaur room" and the art was obviously AI-generated. This crap is everywhere.

The social aspect of a craft is more than just "clout" or "smart creds" from an in-group, it is also collaboration, commentary, discussion, and the joy of helping others find their feet, for example. LLM-centric programming takes away not just the "clout" part but also all the other less egocentric social aspects of programming as a hobby. If the hobby's ecosystem gets whittled down to posting a finished demo and saying "look at what Claude did," well, what is there to talk about, really? The whole "process" aspect of the hobby gets obliterated, or at least effectively ceases to exist as a social phenomenon.

I never realized just how much I would miss being able to assume that (nearly) everything I read online, no matter how crappy or annoying or frustrating, was written by a human being.
Re:Anthropic bans 'abusive or cruel behavior' towards Claude

The problem is that the folks at Anthropic seem convinced that Claude is conscious (or at least likely to be so) and so there is nothing "simulated" about the harm that sadistic users would be causing it.
Re:What's the Future for Pure Math Research in the Age of AI?

I'm wondering how we are going to maintain a critical mass of people who understand frontier mathematics if in another five or ten years the only "mathematicians" truly working at the frontier anymore are AIs. Or maybe "understanding" at depth will become a thing of the past, superseded by broad-strokes grasp of results plus machine verification.
Re:Writing code by hand is over, forever

I see the same thinking in AI-art boosterism: having "good ideas" is the important and "creative" part while actually implementing them is drudgery best delegated to someone (or something) else.

Probably, just like now where there are still small groups of hobbyist programmers who write in little-used languages for obscure old platforms hardly anyone else cares about. But I think it's perfectly fair to mourn the prospect of something that used to be both your passion and livelihood get pushed to some dusty niche corner of the tech landscape.
Re:Fuck it, make it anyway
on Saturday September 12, 2026 @08:34AM (#49671709)
Exactly. Motivation is rarely a question of either/or (art for art's sake / art for recognition). And for many practitioners, being part of a community of fellow artists who "know the struggle" is also part of the fun.

It's no more illegal than promising a tax cut for everyone if you're elected. What you can't do is promise money exclusively to the people who vote for you. That's bribery.
