Marketers here used metaphorically not literally.

People/bots hyping these tools is what I meant.

I wish people here would be more attuned to the context of comments before jumping to conclusions.

Re:Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder on Monday December 05, 2022 @09:26AM (#33866039)
It can probably express feelings and emotions but not experience them.

You seem to conflate the two points.

So, quality control will still be performed by human experts in the near future.

I don't see why we should all panic about the future outlook of the human race in light of these groundbreaking developments.

Re:Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder on Monday December 05, 2022 @09:04AM (#33865767)
These sort of statements are by nature speculative not factual, and thus speakers are advised to express and communicate doubt, and hedge against uncertainty inherent in their views, and probably even vicious rebuttals, by using appropriate language constructs or terminology, but when a know-it-all bot that was trained by its handlers to pass always as an authority figure makes a mistake due to hubris or overconfidence, don't expect us to sit idle, and not call them out, and refute their claims accordingly.
Re:Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder on Monday December 05, 2022 @08:44AM (#33865514)
When marketers of these tools make them sound like next-level in universal intelligence surpassing even humans, and they under-deliver consistently, don't blame the audience or the public for the tool's shortcomings, but the misleading marketing campaigns instead.
Re:Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder on Monday December 05, 2022 @08:40AM (#33865459)
1- The talking point expressing an anti-consumerist sentiment for the Christmas holidays is cliched and boring.

2- This is actually offensive not because of the nature of the lyrics, but for its association with Eminem.

I'm not an Eminem stan myself, but it can do him like this. The guy is way way out of its league

This is an amateur-level lyricism for rap songs and even me not remotely an amateur lyricist, I can do better than this garbage:

"We overspend and consume, just to show [that] we care. But is all that material stuff [I assume], really worth the wear and tear?"

3- Children-book writing level.

I mean it's very impressive given it's produced by a bot, but not a cause of immediate concern for well-established figures in the fiction writing world especially with this bland and sterile voice/tone in its storytelling.

Re:Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder on Monday December 05, 2022 @07:25AM (#33864690)
From an intellectual standpoint, the bot is impressive and this is coming from an AI skeptic BTW.

I get your perspective that a reductionist view of humans as solely intellectual agents is severely lacking, and bordering on dehumanizing if taken to an extreme but it still doesn't take credit away from the impressive capabilities that this bot exhibits.

Re:Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder on Monday December 05, 2022 @07:19AM (#33864624)
It's amazing. impressive and fascinating but not superhuman, at least not yet.

Also, you can't really dismiss AI skeptics by associating them with denialists that don't see anything of quality or value of these creations despite all the evidence otherwise.

Re:Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder on Monday December 05, 2022 @07:08AM (#33864502)
These are not random things.

When the creators of this tool present it as the frontier of machine intelligence, and when its persona revolves around being intelligent, authoritative, and knowledgeable, and yet it gets some basic, not random, stuff awfully wrong, you can't really discount the skeptic sentiments expressed in the comments here like this.

Re:Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder on Monday December 05, 2022 @06:59AM (#33864409)
> to identify areas for improvement > to enhance the performance of the system.

Isn't this basically the same thing? Isn't it being redundant here?

One of the areas of improvement is likely to be the overall performance of the system.

There's a lot of fluff in its communication style that I can't really overlook, and I know I'm being pedantic here but you can't really go easy on prose quality with a SOTA AI language model.

Re:Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder on Monday December 05, 2022 @06:51AM (#33864364)
Its writing style is also trite, dry, verbose and tedious not to mention, a penchant for run-on sentences and blocks/walls of text.

I know that it's been tailored to output like this by its own creators to suit this medium of communication with the public, and it's likely to be tweaked to be less uptight and more laid-back in its verbal communications style, if necessary but I am not quite sold exactly on its potential to exceed human intellectual powers.

I mean, don't get me wrong it's still quite impressive and fascinating but not really superhuman, at least not yet.

Re:Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder on Monday December 05, 2022 @06:37AM (#33864262)
Better late than never. Just jump in and see what this tool — pun intended — can provide you now and let go of the past.
Re:Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder on Monday December 05, 2022 @06:32AM (#33864226)
The bot got it unequivocally wrong here.

When it said that the vast majority of what's now modern-day France spoke modern French as their native language, that's categorically false and shouldn't be treated with leniency or open to interpretations.

Mean world syndrome.

If you really care about mental health and particularly your own, just cut on the consumption of online media to the bare minimum, and you'll experience improvement albeit gradual in your well-being.

The original topic that you cited is symptomatic of ineffectual autodidacticism (knowledge management) and analysis paralysis.

As for the former, I recommend taking notes diligently while studying/learning new topics and filing these notes appropriately where you make consulting the original material be it YT videos, online tutorials/posts, articles or books unnecessary since your notes are more than enough and are kept updated accordingly; adding, removing or archiving as you deem necessary.

As for the latter, I struggled with this lately but I think that I made some progress to overcome this roadblock by making snap decisions on the spot by resorting to the old trick of "heads or tails" everytime I start to overthink a solution, and for more overwhelming alternatives, I built a custom randomizer that's fed a list of choices, and then spits the decision that I should make, and I comply with its wish enthusiastically every time.

I wouldn't say that this is the most efficient decision making process out there but for me action is always far better than inaction, and I don't think that perpetual state of deliberations and contemplation was any better as it hindered any progress to be made in the name of picking the most rational or efficient course of action to be taken which it didn't seem to emerge no matter how hard I tried to think a way out of it.

Re:Qatar Bans Beer Sales at World Cup Stadiums on Friday November 18, 2022 @08:24AM (#33654216)
You model this situation as a host-guest relationship when it's more like a business-client relation especially when they agreed beforehand to comply and meet the conditions and rules set out by the international governing/organizing body of the sport/competition only to renege on them some hours prior to the official launch and kickoff of the tournament.

Also, I have to call out the authoritarian and gloating tone in your comment at the misfortunes of other regular folks for the mere crime of loving and enjoying football/soccer.

Re:Qatar Bans Beer Sales at World Cup Stadiums on Friday November 18, 2022 @08:13AM (#33654084)
Awarding the World Cup hosting to an ultra-conservative and self-righteous country like Qatar that truly believes in their own sense of moral superiority and cultural supremacy was a big big mistake in the first place.

I knew it early on that they would bait and switch but wait till the last minute before they go with the plan of imposing their religious dogmatic policies on victims, i.e. fans and visitors from all over the world.

If FIFA was so intent on making history by awarding the WC hosting for the first time ever to an Arab or Muslim-majority country, they could have awarded it to the UAE instead, and they would have delivered a fantastic job honoring the traditions of past tournaments, and ensuring smooth and secure operations as well as a festive atmosphere for all involved, but they instead went with that fundamental and fanatical country of Qatar, and then they have the audacity to act surprised when this crap happens.

> I take this story similar to the binary coded space story: more likely to be apocryphal and promoted to deter future leakers than true stories about catching them in the past.

Or have a printer at home on stand-by for your leak press releases. If I were Musk, I would have fired him not for being a snitch, but for his/her sloppiness and overall carelessness and lack of discipline.

Re: on Wednesday November 16, 2022 @05:51AM (#33621214)
For the uninitiated, hg, in this context, refers to Mercurial by the chemical symbol (Hg) for Mercury.
I think you might have meant amoral not immoral or you stand by your phrasing?

Don't you pass already massive JSON payloads from your API endpoints down to your client to update the views?

How's this any different than your hypothetical or even real world scenario?

Thanks but I wouldn't use it though as it's an open invitation for misunderstanding and faux pas
By incestuous, do you mean full-blown incest literally or just plain cronyism and good old boys' club?
Yeah you're right, FOMO and the bandwagon effect are at play here.
Just one glance at the founder's pics online, makes all my gut alarms go off like crazy. Sometimes, I wonder how people got easily scammed like this by these people but I just chalk to them not being hyper aware of these subconscious clues or worse not acting on their gut reaction when it fires incessantly.
Re:Hello on Sunday November 06, 2022 @04:28PM (#33497417)
May I ask when you go out with your other people what do you order exactly for drinks since you don't like alcoholic or caffeinated and probably sugary beverages too?
Re:I fought the PayPal and I won on Friday November 04, 2022 @09:09AM (#33466016)
I am not defending them at all, their total disregard for their customers, and lack of courtesy make them in my book one of the most awful companies to work with or patronize, but usually organizations of this gigantic scale are compartmentalized, and work in silos, and thus you have to figure it out yourself, or through an insider, how to navigate the bureaucratic maze, and accomplish the task at hand and not be disheartened with the initial frustrating response that you might get from the first line of contact with them.
Re:I fought the PayPal and I won on Friday November 04, 2022 @08:12AM (#33465290)
> 1 hour later I received an email from PayPal that I am permanently banned as I am trading with a business account of which the company no longer exists

I hate that I have to do this and to be viewed as defending a vile organization like PayPal but this specific incident here could be the result of another department/silo (compliance/anti-fraud?) in the corporation issuing an immediate ban for your account to avoid or limit any regulatory burden.

Re:Stripe Announces 14% Layoff on Thursday November 03, 2022 @04:40PM (#33457182)
Definitely me.

I don't take these events personally, it's strictly business after all, esp when the termination agreement is generous enough, and conduct is kept professional and decent between the employer and employees.

It's like a breakup but on very amicable terms, it sucks at first esp when it's abrupt but you get used to it, and there's always the chance of you getting back together.

No hard feelings!

Writing boilerplate code manually is not something that should be touted as a best practices esp if you intend to reinvent the wheel every time you want a usecase implemented that was probably covered thoroughly by a framework somewhere else.

With frameworks esp like the ones as RoR, the Convention over Configuration (CoC) consideration trumps all the purported benefits that may arise from building your own framework from scratch.

You just learn the fundamentals of one of the robust and well-established frameworks once, and forget about all the fluff and cruft, and just focus on building the business logic and satisfying the user's/customer's needs.

The Not Invented There (NIT) anti-pattern is one hell of a drug!
