Re:Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals on Wednesday December 04, 2024 @04:23PM (#42322180)
Does anyone know of a more accurate economic measurement of growth rather than GDP?

Building bombs a la Russia and paying a lot for healthcare is great for GDP but are those money well spent to grow the economy?

Its like we have built our entire lives around another time system! /s

You get similar problems converting between Freedom degrees and Celsius. Its just what people have built an understanding of.

Customer choices can still lead to monopolies..
Crimea is de jure in Ukraine per international consensus. Crimea is de facto occupied by Russia. These are orthogonal statements are both valid. Everything else you listed derives from these premises.

Re:Europe Is Losing Nuclear Power Just When It Needs Energy on Tuesday February 01, 2022 @08:55AM (#30162392)
This. We need nuclear to keep the base load green. Wind and solar need batteries to be base load providers. Building out both battery and renewable infrastructure at the same time is a tall order.

Re:Many clothing donations end up in African landfills on Saturday January 22, 2022 @01:27AM (#30034236)
At the office several of my coworkers use a service in which they rent cloths. Kinda oike Netflix was for DVDs. You pick a few you like, they send them over and next month you send them back. All for a monthly fee.

Someone once told me the average piece of cloth only gers worn 7 times before being disposed of. Dont qoute me on that though :)

Re:Ask HN: Should I publish my research code? on Friday January 14, 2022 @01:45PM (#29938389)
Yes.
Rather its that the goverment funded development resulted in a bad product. People reimplementing it in a their spare time resulted in an even better product.
Re:Apple M1 Max Geekbench Score on Thursday October 21, 2021 @01:22AM (#28940631)
Intel tried to ”design down” their uArch.

Also, there is a TON of pro Mac users. If we define ’pro’ as getting paid for work done on Macs..

Not to mention M1 emulates x86 pretty darn well..

Ah, ”the EU”, only something like 27 countries with highly different laws and economies..

Erm, the entire university system in Europe is built on collaboration between countries.

ESA is a thing. ITER is a thing. But mainly all those small international projects that simply would be too niche or small for a single country or market. Im talking about stuff like wave power startup, on land fishfarms, salvage operations in the baltic, cofinancing of highways (or powerlines so that green energy may find its way across the union), et cetera..

Re:Go standard library benchmarks – Intel vs. M1 on Friday November 20, 2020 @04:12AM (#25158710)
Exciting times for CPU architectures this year with both the M1 and Zen 3 being highly competitive. The 2010s were a bit of a stagnation when it comes to performances, lets hope more the 2020s is more interesting.

It was a bit hard to read honestly. A bit of rehash but that is most of the content on the internet anyways. Felt like someone writing for a school assignment.

There are a bunch of downsides to large caches. Everything from access time to chip layout to latency and even power consumption. Everything cant be cache and be awesome.. :P
