Re:Commodore 1600 VICmodem on Friday October 30, 2026 @10:39AM (#50304597)
I remember buying one of these at a computer flea market in Toronto sometime in ‘83 before my C64 days. It’s what got me hooked on being able to get “online” and see what the rest of the world was doing with their VIC-20s.

Soon after, I was able to afford a 1200 baud modem for my C64.

This isn’t an airport, you don’t need to announce your departure.
Re:An old photo of a large BBS on Thursday March 12, 2026 @09:29PM (#47359660)
I'm enjoying the nostalgia on HN this week!
Re:An old photo of a large BBS on Thursday March 12, 2026 @09:28PM (#47359655)
There's a name from the past... according to the Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rusty_n_Edie%27s_BBS, they _only_ had 124 dial-in lines.
Re:An old photo of a large BBS on Thursday March 12, 2026 @07:52PM (#47358939)
I recall running Opus (or maybe the predecessor whose name escapes me) under DESQview on my lousy XT clone. I don’t recall it being crashy but it certainly didn’t have enough horsepower to handle the BBS software and an interactive DOS window.

I couldn’t afford a second machine in those days and having to sacrifice my one and only PC for the full-time BBS wasn’t fun :)

Re:Why NetNewsWire Is Not a Web App on Saturday October 04, 2025 @04:30PM (#45476416)
I dunno, Google Reader was actually pretty good. I am also a NetNewsWire user…
Re:Reverse Engineering Bambu Connect on Monday January 20, 2025 @12:47AM (#42765359)
I did the same- replaced an Ender with an A1. Unfortunately, I’ve had it 10 days and have yet to be able to print anything. Won’t calibrate and cannot update firmware. Seems like a commonly reported issue but tech support is still bumbling around with no useful suggestions. I foresee it going back.
Re:I deleted my social media accounts on Sunday January 12, 2025 @08:50PM (#42679175)
It always shocked me that isn’t the way for all. When I was on FB, I only friended people that I “knew” in real-life. I guess that’s why I only had a handful of friends :)
There are other usable browsers… haven’t had Chrome on my machines in literally years.

Re:Sublime Text 4 Build 4142 on Friday November 11, 2022 @06:00PM (#33567980)
I want to be a Sublime Text user. I want to give them my money. I want the performance of a native macOS app, but…

I’m a full-time Go developer. Last time I tried Sublime Text, I couldn’t get close to what I have in vscode with an all-in-one Go extension to handle `gopls` for function lookups/refactoring/etc and `golangci-lint` for linting, for example. I am even willing to live without integrated debugging if everything else is near perfect. Sublime gets so close with several extensions, but it didn’t feel coherent. Before I try again, is it worth the effort or is Go support still spread across several disparate extensions from different developers?

Re:The Amiga Workbench Simulator on Monday October 17, 2022 @04:45PM (#33239298)
This brings back fond memories of my A1000 with Workbench 1.3.

It's still amazing what this machine was capable of given it's very limited resources back in the day.

Anybody remember Fred Fish shareware/public domain? I hung out at a local computer store and copied dozens of floppies in the heydays of the Amiga.

Re:2020 Mac Mini – Putting Apple Silicon M1 To The Test on Tuesday November 17, 2020 @09:57AM (#25124388)
Is it safe to assume that future ASi CPUs for desktops will have just Firestorm cores and no Icestorm, which should further increase MT performance?

I know Apple was trying to get to market quickly, but I fail to understand why we need Icestorm cores in a non-mobile CPU, especially with this already (really) low TDP.

Re:Odroid-HC4 is a $65 2-bay network attached storage device on Wednesday October 21, 2020 @08:16AM (#24847021)
Interesting project/product, though I'd really like to see a conventional case instead of the "toaster" style.
I really haven’t had a positive experience with Microsoft Teams
+1

I am quite comfortable dropping to a terminal to run `ag` but this shouldn’t be necessary. Such wasted potential in a GUI file manager and seemingly no chance it’ll ever be improved.

Re:Devuan Beowulf 3.0.0 stable release on Tuesday June 02, 2020 @08:52PM (#23398437)
You're not the only one who thought that :)
Sadly, the Archer C7 cannot exceed 60Mbit/s without hardware offload when running OpenWRT. I had to replace mine with a Ubiquiti wireless access point and a dedicated pfSense box.
My biggest hangup for my project is Celery... not compatible with 3.7 due to the use of the reserved keyboard `async` :(

Then stop trying... let them prove or disprove themselves and we'll go from there.

Re:MacBook Pro is a lie on Monday November 07, 2016 @04:53PM (#12895537)
IMO, the majority of "pros" that have made the most noise about the latest MacBook Pro aren't pros at all.

I typically bounce between vim and Atom for Python development, with occasional forays into VSC. VSC has come along very nicely to the point where I may just make it my full time GUI editor.

Can anybody recommend some must have plugins for Python development on VSC?

I didn't even know of this app until now. How does it compare to VirtualBox, VMware Fusion, or Parallels, for example?
This sounds like solid advice. I've done freelance work with Wordpress for one of my clients and it showed potential. Any tips on pitching WordPress to those who are not sure what it can do for them? This client, in particular, I was working with was interested in setting up an online store using WooCommerce.

FWIW, I am a developer with strong Linux/unix admin knowledge, and plenty of PHP experience.

I didn't read the article. I am getting tired of Marco.
Re:Ex-NASA Man Squeezes Cloud Onto USB Stick on Thursday September 29, 2011 @10:50AM (#3052627)
The guy who created this has great cred, but geez, this is gimmicky as hell! Hardly something to be taken seriously in the large enterprise datacenter.
