Re:HashiCorp’s multi-product strategy on Thursday September 01, 2022 @01:21PM (#32679762)
Agree, smaller providers are more difficult to work with, hard to draw the line between an issue with the tool or a developer introduced issue though, I do agree that smaller providers tend to be weird, so I think Terraform/Hashi could do a better job at making it easier for developers to create better/more reliable providers.

It baffles me that there's still no way of just disabling a block without having to introduce a count parameter, that should have been fixed ages ago.

Re:HashiCorp’s multi-product strategy on Wednesday August 31, 2022 @12:15PM (#32664341)
I agree that Hashi's approach to Terraform is “if there's a workaround, we won't fix it” I don't see Terraform as hard to use for DRY stuff, we have fully adopted Terraform, we now have 100+ modules that are used in more than 20+ AWS accounts with no major issues, these modules are opinionated and are mostly just plug and play for the teams that use them.

Pulumi is great, but you need to really trust your people to write stuff with Pulumi, in our case most teams can just grab a module, submit a pull-request with the values they want and it gets reviewed by a member of the infrastructure team, if everything looks ok then it's merged and the infra gets deployed/changed.

Even with that simple workflow we have issues with devs misunderstanding some concepts, even devs that have been using Terraform for months, it's not a simple tool to use, I would be worried about them having to use Pulumi for the same things.

It might just be an issue of scale though, we have a gigantic dev team and are riddled with regulations, so Terraform is the perfect fit for us, and again, we don't have DRYness issues, nothing obvious at least.

Re:Unofficial guide to dotfiles on GitHub on Tuesday August 30, 2022 @05:01PM (#32655016)
Yeah, I don't understand why people like reinventing the wheel, Stow works, Make works, both are available everywhere, you don't need 30 layers of JS to manage dotfiles, I'm not against progress, but at least make something better than what's already around.
Re:Stop saying 10x developer on Friday August 26, 2022 @02:43PM (#32611207)
It's so stupid if you dumb it down even further, it's so obvious that there are people that will be worth 10x more in every field, just compare the worst developer you know with the best developer you know, the difference it's probably way more than ten-fold; same thing with a doctor, scientist, mathematician, etc.
Re:Stop saying 10x developer on Friday August 26, 2022 @02:40PM (#32611170)
That doesn't sound like a 10x developer at all, sounds like a bad developer that prioritizes dumping code, 10x developer would write docs, spend time planning the architecture and removing complexity from systems.
Re:Stop saying 10x developer on Friday August 26, 2022 @02:39PM (#32611152)
This comparison is not good at all since you're only considering one metric, maybe he's a 10x runner because he has better technique, recovers faster, gets less tired, etc.

It's like comparing developers by how fast they can type.

Re:A sane SSH(1) key management example on Friday August 26, 2022 @02:36PM (#32611121)
So, you'd ask someone to SSH into a server, and you'll get some of his public keys (I think the default limit is 5 keys), what would you do with that? You can also just go to their GitHub profile and fetch the keys or ask them to send you their public keys, they're meant to be public after all.

Here's one of my public keys, for free: ssh-ed25519 AAAAC3NzaC1lZDI1NTE5AAAAICIc3nOnSnsiAdkjAdH5WR9enQiPYWq1zAVsTDt60e91

Re:A sane SSH(1) key management example on Thursday August 18, 2022 @11:27AM (#32510992)
Not a big deal at all considering that they're public keys, there's no security concern there.

Feels weird, but it's like going into a building that requires a badge and showing proof that you actually own several keys, then the building guard telling you he needs X key to enter since that's the one they know, and it's authorized.

All your public keys in your GitHub account are accessible through a link, just <github.com/<username>.keys>

Thanks! Those are really good resources. :)

Well a little feedback. I won't sign up to the site just to check soccer scores. Maybe is just me but there're a lot of sites that will give you scores and minute-by-minute analisis of a game.

Ask HN: What's the best music service available.

I've been dancing around various music online music services (Spotify, Rdio, Google Music, Grooveshark, Deezer, etc) but I haven't found yet something that fulfills my needs. Google music need to be always on and doesn't have a desktop client. Spotify doesn't have a nice view for albums and it's "hard" to upload my own music. Rdio mobile client is painfully slow. So, how do you manage your music?...

I tend to use SublimeText + Plain Tasks: https://github.com/aziz/PlainTasks

With the pomodoro technique. I find it useful.

That's neat! I'm not a web development fan but I'll definitely give it a try sometime soon. I really really hate HTML, I don't know I can code easily but I have a really hard time with HTML and CSS; Does someone knows a neat resource for this ? I don't wanna just mess around every time I need to do something I haven't done before. I need a lot of time to center something vertically and that just drives me nuts.
Re:Help beta test our site on Tuesday November 05, 2013 @03:02PM (#6677794)
So, what you need testing for? it's pretty straight forward.

Your marketing is awful, please stop self-advertising and get someone that actually knows what he's doing. The idea is great this is just a marketing problem now.
