Re:Enlightenment 0.28 Released with Many Improvements on Saturday October 31, 2026 @01:51PM (#50318308)
Funny how Enlightment was "too heavyweight" at the time it was released, and is now considered lightweight.
Path names are always really complicated, hidden invisible state or not. Just let use the Operating System's APIs to expand the full paths for you.

Then there's Path Canonicalization. This is especially hairy, and only needed in certain circumstances where you need to know when two paths are really on the same filesystem or not (Mount points and symbolic links can cause "C:\dir\file" to be on a different drive than "C:\"). Not helping this is that path canonicalization is broken on Windows in some cases. When you mount a filesystem, you are able to register the volume with the mount manager. If you do register it, path canonicalization will work, but you also get some unwanted side effects (creating a "Recycle Bin" and "System Volume Information" directory). If you don't register it with mount manager, the files are still usable, but Path Canonicalization won't find the drive. You have to enumerate every drive letter to find it, and if you mounted it inside a directory, that's even harder.

If you're feeling especially crazy, you can detect when a program was started from a console or not. That lets you make a Windows program that can display messages in the console that started the program. (But the console still is accepting inputs as if no program is running)

Animation production (2D or 3D) can also have raw RGB frames.
Re:H.264 Is Magic on Thursday October 29, 2026 @02:53PM (#50294071)
4:2:0 is not lossless. 4:4:4 with quantizing down to 8-bit YCbCr isn't lossless either. But 10-bit 4:4:4 is reversible back to 8-bit RGB without loss.
Re:H.264 Is Magic on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:26PM (#50292766)
One uncommonly used feature of H.264 is support for lossless video. It's a bit hard to use due to tooling (not easy to discover and select the feature), and is sometimes incompatible with web browsers, but you can get actual lossless video using a mainstream video codec. You can verify that it really is lossless, and doesn't have any conversion step where it's quantized to 8-bit YUV.

"x264vfw" is one tool which supports this format, even inside of an AVI file. So older software that uses Video For Windows can create those files.

Re:H.264 Is Magic on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:17PM (#50292601)
Not really, lossless WEBP still decodes much faster than lossless JXL, so if you need to decode the images faster, you use WEBP. Yes, you could also speculatively decode the JXL images to hide the decode time.

For lossy, neither is in a good place, since lossy AVIF beats both lossy JXL and lossy WEBP. Lossless AVIF is a joke and barely competes with PNG.

Re:The Curse of Soldered RAM on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @12:26AM (#50269337)
Windows supports letting you specify Bad RAM ranges in the BCD file. Also, do not do this. Windows will erase your Bad RAM specifications when it upgrades to the next build, leaving you with crashes and possible file corruption.
Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Monday October 26, 2026 @05:13PM (#50251055)
I can tell that the person making the video never actually tried to run Doom on a real Windows 2000 or XP machine, otherwise they would have noticed that the game has absolutely no sound. Sound support for DOS games in Windows 2000+ was not built into the operating system. You needed to install a third party tool called "VDMSound" if you wanted sound blaster emulation for DOS games.

I just use a tab suspender, I prefer having RAM over having something cute.
"Censorship" vs "Content moderation". You can't have online discussions without moderation, and that makes moderation some form of censorship. Thus you can't have online discussions without some form of censorship. Only difference is who is doing the censoring.

Those are some big song previews. 1:30 is a lot more than the typical 30 seconds.
Why show a screenshot of a different game (SimCity 2000) when discussing SimCity?
Well a VHS tape isn't normally a stream of numbers, it's an analog video signal (with low-resolution chroma merged in). You can turn it into a digital signal if you really want to, there were some consumer ISA cards that let you perform tape backups onto VHS, claiming a whopping 4GB of storage on tape.

Re:Laptop Based on 6502 CPU on Monday October 19, 2026 @10:04AM (#50152676)
When you say "sleep mode", do you mean like Z80 having a HALT instruction which waits for an interrupt, or do you mean entering a very low power state like a laptop put to sleep?

6502 emulators can easily detect dumb endless loops, and that can turn into what's basically a Z80 HALT.

Re:Laptop Based on 6502 CPU on Sunday October 18, 2026 @10:36PM (#50147731)
It's gotta be integrated together (and possibly be at a smaller process size) before you get all the power savings. If you have a real 6502, it has no internal RAM or cache, and you need to send power back and forth to the RAM chips. (I presume it's SRAM, but it could also be PSRAM)

If you ran a 6502 emulator on a cheap ARM SOC, it would be much lower power.

Can't go below 12GB?
Re:Non-Determinism Doesn't Matter on Saturday October 17, 2026 @09:56AM (#50131229)
For LLMs, you're picking a result token from a list of tokens and their probabilities. It's not a situation like cryptography where you need secure random numbers. Just traditional and simple RNGs (seeded using the system clock) are useful enough for this task.

For the koboldcpp/llama.cpp example, there is a setting where you can change the initial RNG value. It says "seed" in sampler settings. Set it to any constant besides 0 and you get consistent behavior.

Re:Non-Determinism Doesn't Matter on Friday October 16, 2026 @03:48AM (#50115398)
Given the same text input, same hardware type (inference on CPU vs on GPU), and same RNG seed, you will get the same exact output. That is deterministic.

That was from when I was testing out someone's claim that koboldcpp got less smart in a newer release, but I was reproducing the exact same output across different versions of the program.

Re:LineageOS 24.0 on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:20AM (#50053112)
I have LineageOS installed on my Moto G7 Power (Ocean) phone, and the GPS places me somewhere like 100 feet north of where I actually am, making navigation useless. I wish I could recommend aftermarket operating systems once the manufacture abandons the device, but this is something serious enough to warrant throwing the phone away.
Re:I guess I'm using WebP now? on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:15AM (#50053073)
"Lossless JPEG" is basically in name only, since it has nothing in common with regular JPEG.
Re:I guess I'm using WebP now? on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:11AM (#50053043)
Meanwhile, JPEG-LI is literally JPEG, just with different rules for how the image is decoded in order to support higher color resolution. (And different rules during encoding to allocate bits differently, usually boosting the bitrate of luma and cutting the bitrate of chroma)
