Re:FlowCE: Calculus on your TI-84 Plus CE on Sunday October 11, 2026 @11:11PM (#50050933)
TI85 can do very basic calculus-like things, such as estimating numeric slope at a point on a graph, and numerical area under a curve. Those correspond to derivative and integral.
Re:I guess I'm using WebP now? on Sunday October 11, 2026 @10:24PM (#50050569)
In GIMP, when you try to save as a "lossless" AVIF, it will add a lossy colorspace conversion step (to 8 bit YCbCr) unless you specifically specify otherwise. And lossless AVIF always loses to lossless WEBP.
Re:I guess I'm using WebP now? on Sunday October 11, 2026 @10:22PM (#50050555)
There are two different codecs both called "webp". There's the lossy VP8 codec, and the lossless codec that's completely different. Lossless WebP is so good that outside of image format support, there's no reason to use anything older (except for very specific kinds of repetitive images).
Re:Fingerprints Are the New Cookies on Sunday October 11, 2026 @10:14PM (#50050489)
The "PHPSESSID" thing is why many message boards couldn't be archived in wayback machine.
What an overlay does is hook the 'present' function, does more drawing, then calls the base 'present' function. It's easy enough to detect when a draw call happens during a call to 'present', that tells you that an overlay is active.

Then you're faced with the problem of how deep your hook is, you either want it to run early (before other hooks), or late (after other hooks but before actual function). When you're trying to capture the overlay, you want your hook to run late.

The cop-out is to hook D3DKMTPresent instead and hope nobody else hooked it.

If you have the standard two-byte backwards jump pointing to a longer jump instruction, you also have another happy case for overriding it (just change the long jump).

Meanwhile, the Microsoft Detours library supports detouring other kinds of instructions at the beginning of a function. It's not exclusively for the 'two byte nop and blank space' thing.

Detouring can be done for already detoured functions. Just look at Steam Overlay vs other systems that hook into Direct3D, they can coexist.
Re:A browser-native classic Visual Basic VB6 IDE on Sunday October 04, 2026 @10:03PM (#49959910)
Best part of VB5 was that when you hit F1, you instantly got help for whatever was under the cursor. VB6 changed it to use some much slower MSDN help system instead.
Re:Newgrounds.com – A community of games, music, and art on Saturday October 03, 2026 @12:12PM (#49945499)
Yeah, home internet (cable, etc) is fast. Mobile internet is not.
Re:Newgrounds.com – A community of games, music, and art on Saturday October 03, 2026 @12:11PM (#49945483)
Ruffle seems to have a bug that causes the intro scene to skip ahead if you wait a while.
Re:Newgrounds.com – A community of games, music, and art on Saturday October 03, 2026 @01:19AM (#49941525)
Assuming you're not looking at the file sizes involved...

SWF is extremely compact, since it was intended to be used over a dialup connection. Flash worked because the player was preinstalled on the computer.

The newer Ruffle player is a 10MB download in addition to the actual flash file. You get a new freshly downloaded copy of Ruffle from every site that's hosting Flash content.

Re:What if we stopped using GPUs? [video] on Friday October 02, 2026 @10:04PM (#49940730)
15 years ago was Sandy Bridge, which added the Intel HD Graphics GPU inside of the processor. MMX was almost 30 years ago.
Re:What if we stopped using GPUs? [video] on Friday October 02, 2026 @06:32PM (#49939433)
16 years ago, Intel CPUs finally got GPUs integrated inside of them. So they did get better at matrix multiplication 15 years ago.
Re:A 20-year-long permanent cookie: America.gov and tracking on Friday October 02, 2026 @12:14PM (#49935209)
I mean 20 year cookies make sense for a logon cookie, but not something given out to guests.
Re:56k.rip – the 1996 dial-up internet experience on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @10:22PM (#49916932)
Who is upvoting this AI-generated nonsense? This is embarrassingly badly made. We have a solitaire game where you cannot drag the cards (and HTML elements move around every time you click), a pinball game with no gap between the flippers, etc etc etc... Nothing about this suggests a human made it.
Re:Tcl/Tk 9.1 Released on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @07:02PM (#49902006)
What about oldschool Visual Basic?
Re:America.gov – Whatever you need from government, start here on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @05:25PM (#49900838)
People don't know that you can search for text within a page. They really do need the chatbot for that.
Re:Show HN: Destroy Any Website with Stickman on Monday September 28, 2026 @04:50PM (#49884149)
Really guys? Detecting a desktop web browser as a "mobile phone" just because the window is sized to be taller than it is wide? Then refusing to let you use the website?
Re:Windows 11½ on Monday September 28, 2026 @02:34PM (#49882411)
Back when Windows RG (2001) was considered a sharp mockery.

(Random fact, at the time that flash came out, clicking on the A: drive made your real floppy drive light up)

Re:The Copilot+ PC brand is dead on Monday September 28, 2026 @02:07AM (#49874209)
Even the arrow keys are weird, they report as numpad keys, but also have a special extended key flag to tell you that it's not really a numpad key.
Re:The Copilot+ PC brand is dead on Monday September 28, 2026 @01:51AM (#49874119)
I personally wrote the program that does all the steps necessary to remap the Copilot key, since it's actually three keys (Left Windows, Left Shift, F23), it's not as simple as it sounds to block all those keypresses while also allowing the real keys through.

You could also call it "I changed your copilot key back to Ctrl".

https://github.com/Dwedit/NoCopilotKey

This program does properly allow you to use the left shift key completely independently of the remapped copilot key, many similar programs do not have this feature.

"Do not want"
You can still get ISA slots on systems as new as Broadwell with an adapter.
Re:F-Droid 2.0: A New Chapter for Android Freedom on Thursday September 24, 2026 @05:06PM (#49836720)
Can I finally block those bible apps?
Re:The "Windows XP Box" (2003) on Thursday September 24, 2026 @01:32AM (#49826623)
Back when software came in boxes.
LLMs use random numbers, so a single test won't necessarily match someone else's experience.
The real question is if it's relocatable or not (still works correctly if you add or remove bytes)
Re:UTF-8000: Unlimited UTF-8 on Sunday September 20, 2026 @02:45PM (#49778698)
CJK characters is the one big weak point of UTF-8. It forces them to be 3 bytes large instead of the local codepage which is 2 bytes per character, or UTF-16 which is also 2 bytes per character.
Re:The Lamentable Later Life of Lemmings on Sunday September 20, 2026 @10:44AM (#49776381)
"Ten Green Bottles" is the base of that song.
Re:UTF-8000: Unlimited UTF-8 on Sunday September 20, 2026 @03:12AM (#49773278)
FF bytes are an easy way to identify an invalid UTF-8 file. This idea doesn't have that property.
