Re:Account bans on Reddit on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @12:20AM (#49988125)
As a regular reddit user I can say that they aren't nearly aggressive enough about banning LLM generated spam, tons of smaller subreddits I used to enjoy following are getting choked with very obvious (it even fails pangram) AI spam posts.
Google scholar link since that one didn't work for me: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=Chal...

Yikes, didn't realize that the 2009 stand included a few really silly things like that. Yes, the 2026 stand is overall pretty decent and doesn't have much objectionable in it.

Re:The Browser's Main Thread Is Expensive on Thursday September 03, 2026 @11:24AM (#49551568)
I started reading and it immediately sounded like AI, sent it to pangram and it agreed. The amount of posts praising it like it's fuckin oxygen or something ... dead fuckin internet
Those skeptical are anticipating a possible large drop in demand before that backlog clears. ie. a change in market conditions that means that many of the orders in that backlog would be cancelled or belong to bankrupt entities.

Many words have already been spilled as to whether or not that might happen, so I'll just shrug rather than adding to them.

> has now widened from the initial +175bps to a whopping +231bps doing more than two-thirds of the work.

2.31% spread over treasuries is heading for junk bond status?

Re:Is Sunscreen the New Margarine? on Monday June 29, 2026 @07:41PM (#48726763)
Yes. Most modern sunscreens are photostable, but even if you aren't going in water or sweating, just moving around (and thus scrunching and un-scrunching your skin on a micro level over and over again) is enough to mess up the sunscreen layer you put on your skin.
Re:Apple to Raise Prices Due to Memory Chip Crunch on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @07:44PM (#48578612)
No, they're regular LPDDR dice from one of the big manufacturers that are mounted on the same package as the SoC.
I would assume 395MW is the nameplate capacity, so you would multiply it by a capacity factor and time to get the energy production in a specific interval. Capacity factor in hydro can vary a lot by season and how much they want to produce vs reservoir levels, but for a back of the envelope 100% capacity factor you have 395 MW × 8,760 hours/year = 3.46TWh/year . Capacity factor could be in the high 90s in good conditions and maximum production but I expect it's a lot lower unless it's a wet year with very few big maintenance jobs needed.
Re:C constructs that still don't work in C++ on Monday May 25, 2026 @11:49AM (#48268236)
It didn't stand out to me on first read but pangram gives it a high confidence rating as being written by AI.
IDGI. How is a company that owns a bunch of infrastructure you almost have to use to put your service on the internet not more profitable such that they have to do layoffs?

Re:MacBook Neo Is a 'Shock' to the PC Industry: Asus Co-CEO on Thursday March 12, 2026 @12:07AM (#47346327)
Please don't link to LLM generated crap.
It's hard to say whether it's AI generated or just bad writing, but my eyes kept sliding off of it. The bolding for emphasis could be a sign it's LLM output though, whatever bot was popular to use for reddit posting a few months ago loved to randomly bold parts of its responses.
Re:Does that use a lot of energy? on Thursday March 05, 2026 @01:42AM (#47258347)
Most clothes washer cycles are about an hour, is the motor really averaging 800 watts over that time?
There are tons of important health effects of exercise beyond caloric balance.
Re:Windows Notepad App Remote Code Execution Vulnerability on Wednesday February 11, 2026 @11:44AM (#46977255)
It splits revenue out to 3 categories, "Productivity and Business Processes", "Intelligent Cloud", and "More Personal Computing", with windows as one of several things in the 3rd group. How did you figure it out as a 5th place revenue source?
Re:Valve is about to win the console generation on Thursday November 13, 2025 @09:38PM (#45923255)
Tariffs/inflation/everything has raised the unit cost to the point that they're probably close to running a loss again sometimes on the latest gen consoles.
On possibility I've seen raised is that slower GI movement -> slower alcohol uptake -> not getting as much of a "hit" from drinking as the effects come on more slowly.
They're saying a net 14,000 reduction after hiring, so it's possible that's consistent with the 30k total from the earlier rumours.
Their performance claims are quite a bit ahead of the distributed android build systems that I've used, I'm curious what the secret sauce is.

As of a few ipadOS versions ago, the higher performance models can use swap space now.
One of the famous small canadian mining companies that went under was named something like Bre-X, somehow a lot of members of the general public had shares of it so it was a big scandal on the news when it went under. Also as it was unraveling a whistleblower at the company "fell" from a helicopter in indonesia, I don't recall if anyone was ever charged or convicted for that.

EDIT: Oh damn it was far sketchier than I recalled and he wasn't a whistleblower. From wikipedia:

The fraud began to unravel rapidly beginning on March 19, 1997, when Bre-X geologist Michael de Guzman reportedly died of suicide by jumping from a helicopter in Indonesia.[11][12] A body was found four days later in the jungle, missing the hands and feet, "surgically removed".[13] In addition, the body was reportedly mostly eaten by animals.[14] According to journalist John McBeth, a body had gone missing from the morgue of the town from which the helicopter flew. The remains of "de Guzman" were found only 400 metres from a logging road. No one saw the body except another Filipino geologist who claimed it was de Guzman. One of the five women who considered themselves to be his wife was receiving monetary payments from somebody long after the supposed death of de Guzman.[13]

Pretty sure Baumol has like 80% of the blame here.
Re:Made for People, Not Cars: Reclaiming European Cities on Wednesday September 10, 2025 @12:07PM (#45199740)
Switzerland's extreme wealth makes them a bit of an outlier though, other european countries are probably a fairer comparisons for most places.

Re:Ask HN: Why hasn't x86 caught up with Apple M series? on Tuesday August 26, 2025 @01:33AM (#45022635)
They're big, expensive chips with a focus on power efficiency. AMD and Intel's chips that are on the big and expensive side tend toward being optimized for higher power ranges, so they don't compete well on efficiency, while their more power efficient chips tend toward being optimized for size/cost.

If you're willing to spend a bunch of die area (which directly translates into cost) you can get good numbers on the other two legs of the Power-Performance-Area triangle. The issue is that the market position of Apple's competitors is such that it doesn't make as much sense for them to make such big and expensive chips (particularly CPU cores) in a mobile-friendly power envelope.
