Goofy looking OpenDyslexic font vastly improves reading

Personal experience. Last year I switched my Kindle font to 'OpenDyslexic' and after a day or two reading became overall more enjoyable. Less eye strain. Longer reading sessions. I've doubled the amount of books I'd normally read in a year.I was never diagnosed as dyslexic and have always enjoyed reading. It's one of the best life hacks I've found.Has anyone else experienced this?More about...

Fire and EMS demands have more impact on our built environment than I see in these comments.

Some of this is direct from land use regulations. Some of this is from political influence of Fire depts.

It's only recently that people are waking up to how the regulatory requirements of staircase design in multi-family buildings for the ostensible purpose of evacuation impact the look and feel of US cities.

Same for street widths. You will rarely find support from fire depts. for compact and connected streets.

Corporate Crime and Punishment: An Empirical Study

"Put simply, for large companies, criminal penalties may be just another cost of doing business—and quite a low cost at that."

I think this comment is not intending to be anything other than curious, but it strikes me with a bit of techno-savior assimilation sentiment. These autonomous tribes have plenty of opportunities to reach out to modern western culture when they are interested in doing so. Suggesting how they should "enter into the modern world over some generations" seems presumptious, even culturally aggressive.
"There is a fire in the theater" when there isn't one creates a chaotic stampede. People die.

The theater is the political culture war. Millions of human lives will die in the chase for politically charged click bait.

In no sane world should this not be punished severely.

This is an example where I'm skeptical that AI will be able to "appreciate" craft. Situationally aware enough to identify and articulate what makes these features notable. There's so much context baked into identifying these features.
it's not a conflict, it's a feature

Re:The Internet Isn't for Humans Anymore on Wednesday June 19, 2024 @11:44AM (#40729343)
"AI's capacity to optimize networking and capital allocation could exacerbate existing inequalities, potentially marginalizing human involvement in economic systems. As AI-driven efficiencies increase, there's a risk that traditional roles and benefits for humans could diminish, necessitating careful consideration of policies to ensure equitable outcomes in an increasingly automated world. Addressing these challenges will require proactive measures to safeguard human welfare while harnessing AI's potential for societal benefit." --AI

Don't. Face the consequences. You chose to fight on this hill. Giving up your sources is immoral.

I don't think she's someone to be admired. Being ceo of an app that is IMO rife with bigotry, xenophobia, and scare mongering.
For those looking: "All participants were taught and instructed to follow a KD, (macronutrient proportion 10 % carbohydrate, 30 % protein, and 60 % fat; at least 5040 kJ). Participants were not instructed to count calories, but to reduce and monitor carbohydrate intake to about 20 g (excluding fiber) per day, eat 1 cup of vegetables per day, 2 cups of salad per day, and were encouraged to drink 8 glasses of water a day."

Musk the worlds most hyped "capital allocator", a phrased increasingly parroted by billionaires and aspiring VC-bros as their raison d'etre to excuse bad behavior.
Resilience: Stay strong when you're product launch isn't going well.

Resilience: Stay strong when you're a working single mother struggling to pay rent and feed your kids.

The techno-twitter teeth grinders would have you believe these are the same. They are not.

Hear me out. Try three transformers.
FedEx has large self-serve scanner/copiers where you just load up the pages and let it rip.
Number of jobs is only as interesting as the wages of those jobs (real wages not nominal wages.) I wish journalists would do better.
You can scan and OCR (adobe) this yourself with not much more effort than boxing and shipping at FedEx

Then repost on related public-facing online forums or a free wordpress site or upload to archive.org

"and walking is made more viable at the stroke of a pen simply by changing the zoning and building code to actually allow people to build walkable neighbourhoods with retail amenities,..."

This is an easy claim but unrealistic in North America. For the Boomers that have lived in single family housing for decades, those who also represent the larget voting block in most major cities, you're expecting them to forfeit their percieved "quality of life."

Have you seen large apartment projects in US cities, they are atrociously designed, with the vanity of walkability but rarely deliver the NYC or San Francisco level of walkability that they are selling.

Yimbys would do well to insist upon better replacement products.

He literally had a fiduciary duty as a board member to his companies to maximize profits above all else, including human decency. The windowless dorms were intended to minimize the cost of construction of the housing his donated millions subsidized.
... and this tribalism led to the violent assembly of contiguous land and hoarding of resources to the alienation of everything/everyone outside the tribe. This pattern evolved into our modern system.

If local environments began to change, then your nomadic tribe moved along rather sitting around waiting to die. Birds fly south for the winter.

This is the capitalistic narrative since the agricultural revolution, thousands of years ago, but it's not true of most of human history.

During pre-agriculture we coexisted with many species, all living off the fat of the land, resources were plentiful for hundreds of thousands of years.

A delightful counterpoint and quick read is the book "Ishmael."

UBI can only work if it's annually adjusted for inflation.

Little known fact: VA mortgages are assumable for other veterans.

A US veteran that purchased in the low-interest rate environment has a significant advantage as a seller in today's market.
