I would also recommend going through the scikit-learn documentation. Some of the tutorials/examples there are pretty good.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to your personal learning style. For me the thing that worked was to go through the above mentioned steps and then find a problem I was interested in and try to solve it using my newly found skills. That way you will discover new tools and methods.
Finally, the Deep Learning [2] book is also very good but I would not recommend it to a beginner. It's better to use it when you have a basic understanding of Machine Learning and you want to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts.

Summarizing in a post the Greek problem is almost impossible, but I would say that the referendum is a terrible idea, especially at this moment.

New Year's Resolutions
With 2015 just around the corner(or already in 2015 in some countries) I would like to see what people are hoping to accomplish in the new year. Please keep it in 1 resolution per person(the most important), so it's easier to go through them.

Ask HN: When should I apply for a patent(and if I should)?
Hi,I would like to ask you when it's better to file for a patent. I have an idea for a system(software+hardware) and I could turn this into a prototype in roughly 6 months. The question is, should I apply for a patent now, with only the design on papers or should I wait till I have a working prototype? And a bigger question, is there any point in applying for a patent in general? I mean, if you...

ASK HN: How to program a quadrotor?
Hello HN!I am here to pick your brains and ask if any of you has experience programming a quad rotor. We(a team of undergraduate students) want to make our own autopilot and we would like people to tell us how to get off the ground. The resources on the internet are not in one place(or even two) and it would save us a lot of time if someone could pinpoint us to some sites to read. Thanks a lot!
Again, I get the point that you are trying to make. I just don't think it's appropriate to present such an app or behave like that in front of a few thousand people.
The fact that the majority of the coders are guys doesn't mean that it's ok to create an app which shows boobs and then present it to a few thousand people. Although, I am sure those guys did it for a laugh, they did not understand the repercussions of their actions. With your logic it would be acceptable to put porn movies on a screen, just because guys like porn.
What would you say if the app displayed "male parts"?
I am European and I am pretty sure that if that happened here the response would be more fierce. A porn app is not liberalizing sex, it's just making things worst.
Finally, a business which succumbs to the desires of its clients, when those desires are exorbitant, is simply not a business to trust.
