Ask HN: Has anyone here turned around their life in their 40s?

I know the best of my life is behind me, but I need help salvaging what's left of it. I've been meaning to ask for help for a couple of years now, but only now got around to it after being scared by my first real suicidal ideation a few nights ago. HN is probably not a suitable platform for this, but /r/advice seems to be not very active and I can't post on /adv/ due to some IP range ban. There...

This is OT and has probably been covered elsewhere, but why does PG not use https on his site? Also, why does it not trigger showing the 'Toggle Reader View (F9)' button in the Firefox addressbar, if anyone knows?

Math newbie here.

Does 'filter' (as it is used here) have a precise mathematical definition? The only other place where I've seen this word used is the 'bloom filter', which according to Wikipedia is not an algorithm like the Kalman filter but a data structure.

The LaTeX isn't rendering on any of my mobile browsers. Anyone else see the same?
re: Explorer Patcher, does it allow the (W11/W10) taskbar to be moved to one of the vertical edges? The github page doesn't mention this.

I prefer the taskbar on the left and the fact that a vertical taskbar is not supported on W11 is one of the principal reasons I haven't upgraded from W10.

Would you mind making this available as an EPUB?
Does anyone else suffer from GI issues like epigastric pain (acidity) brought on by tea/coffee consumption? How do you deal with it?

There are commercial traffic micro-simulation applications[0] for exactly this purpose.

Will this show up in Office 2019?
Where is Part 1? I tried replacing the '2' in the URL with a '1' (and also tried removing it) but got their 404.
> I want to see more of the web paid for directly, rather than funded through snooping.

I could possibly live with paying for the privilege of using the web, if respect for user privacy is, um, guaranteed somehow. But that probably won't (can't?) happen, and we'd end up having to pay for the privilege of being snooped upon.

Re:WebIDE lands in Firefox Nightly on Monday June 23, 2014 @11:36AM (#7932495)
I've always wondered why developer tools are bundled with browsers. Shouldn't they be available as separate downloads as:

1. Most people use browsers compared to working with them for development, and

2. The additional tools just add to the package size and possibly increased resource usage (if they are running with the rest of the browser)?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

Thanks; I also found this reddit link[1] lower down on this discussion page which answers my questions.

Re:Wish I was here by Zach Braff on Wednesday April 24, 2013 @11:28AM (#5601986)
Maybe I do not understand this particular Kickstarter (and the economics/dynamics of movie-making, among other things), but I did not find 'revenue', 'profit sharing' or other related words/phrases anywhere on the page, or in this HN discussion. I've seen the rewards column, and though I'd like to add 'indie movie producer' to my resume, I don't see any prospective returns for what is essentially a risky investment (term used loosely).

Zach Braff is a very successful TV/movie star, does he seriously not have $2m of his own to make this movie just the way he likes it? Like others, is this crowd-funding exercise also mostly for 'social proof'?

Thanks to all who reply.

Does the 'Activate JavaScript protection on login' option work for you with 'Secure Login'? It has been working for me for a long time now; I am just wondering if I am doing something wrong.
The site doesn't work nicely with on-demand plugin usage like click-to-play or flashblock, although it is possible that I could be doing something wrong.
Re:GNU Emacs 24.1 released on Sunday June 10, 2012 @10:48AM (#4091176)
Does anyone know if/when it will be available via Ubuntu Software Center or some PPA? I am on Ubuntu 12.04.
What does your site offer over Mint (which is free)?

I don't really know how venture funding works, so pardon my stupid question: Why did he need/want to raise $41m from outside when he sold his company for $850m a few years ago?

While we're on the subject, does anyone know how to search with date/period restrictions without using 'Advanced Search'? "foo date:3" (last three months) doesn't work anymore.
Re:MongoDB 2.0 Released on Monday September 12, 2011 @09:35PM (#2989593)
A few months ago, I saw an online interactive 'trainer' of sorts for MongoDB, much like Codecademy's JS tutorials. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

EDIT: Damn Google, you good: http://www.mongly.com/

33. Swartz intended to distribute a significant portion of JSTOR’s archive of digitized journal articles through one or more file-sharing sites.

How do they know this? Has he said something to that effect?

I didn't check them all, but I got 403 and blank pages when trying to access the python and C++ files respectively.

Your site is mildly amusing, but I strongly believe we need to keep gimmickry such as this (along with other banal stuff, and politics) off HN. With every passing day, this site is looking more like Reddit.
