News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

DarrenLyman

Ah yes... The inventor of LISP.
Yes, I would agree. Although I would take it a step further for web engineers (developers) to say that if you don't have your N+ and/or Cysco certs, you shouldn't be designing.

Ask HN/Poll: Who is/are your greatest mentor(s), and why?

I would like to conduct a poll, however this poll requires your reply. I would like to know who your greatest mentor(s) is/are and why you think so?As for me, I would have to say its a close tie between my Dad and Barry Fey.- My Dad has taught me many lessons in business from the time I was 7 years old and opened my first lemonade stand to about 5 minutes ago.- Barry Fey...

Re:YC s11 Rejected Applicants: This is the real test. on Friday April 08, 2011 @12:05AM (#2422394)
I am also an Eagle Scout! I have been hired at previous "jobs" because I obtained the rank. Just remember the sky starts where the ground ends! Just get it off the ground, and your in the sky... :)
Re:Poll: Do you know C? on Friday April 08, 2011 @12:02AM (#2422388)
I use C for programming PLC's (programmable logic controllers). I have created testing centers built on C to test used PLC's.
Thanks!
More to come, very soon!
Nope, Already doing it. A user driven embed-able music polling platform / app. Its partially developed right now and will be rocking the music industry very soon. We also hold huge ground with existing social networks and launching already developed apps very soon. Looking forward to being the one that got away... and never looking back!

What are you building?

Thanks for the follow up post pg, we are looking forward to hearing from you!

Re:Ask HN: Have you looked back at your YC submission? on Wednesday March 30, 2011 @02:31PM (#2388515)
We check HN every day for comments / feedback from founders, but haven't looked at the app on YC. We constantly look at our copy to evaluate changes since submitting, and reform answers as other incubator programs have started following us. However we have not submitted to any other programs than YC. We feel the anticipation is awesome and look forward to checking HN daily until the final say is issued.

As for our video, neither of us like the camera so its terrifying to look at it and we haven't except the following day to verify it was posted. We really hope to get the chance to meet everyone in person. There is a lot about personal contact (meeting someone) that comes through, that you just can't portray in an app, or video.

No we haven't, and were wondering the same question. Thanks for posting this!

Interested.

Ask HN: Is Google's algorithm broke? or is it my account?

This is the second time in two days that google returned a google generated 404 error code based on a site link I tried to click. The first was yesterday searching fortune 500 list, the first 4 links returned the 404 error (all linked to money.cnn.com) those seem to be repaired now. The second was today searching "denver weather" the 5 day forecast links gave me the same error, as did...

Re:Why Intelligent People Use More Drugs on Thursday March 24, 2011 @11:53AM (#2364561)
This article shows me that the "societal standards" of what "bright" and "very bright" individuals are, have fallen. I refuse to believe that "bright" and "very bright" individuals are in the range mentioned in the article. Maybe the "dumbing down" of society has been instituted through the mindless activities that humanity participates in like watching t.v. or movies.

As social networks have taken over the internet, live social interaction has diminished as well. Humans need live social interaction for personal development, they don't need to see/view social interaction on t.v., in a movie, or online. There is neurological reaction that occurs when you meet someone for the first time. This can not be duplicated through viewing/obtaining the action from the outside. There is an electrical transference the occurs when shaking someone's hand, or giving them a hug that cannot be obtained through "poking" someone online.

I agree with the article that drug use by more intellectual people would be higher in the fact that there is no escaping the mind. The mind needs a break periodically, and rest for the mind comes in more ways than just sleep. Even while sleeping intellectual people are still calculating and/or working on projects.

How many hackers are reading the YC applications?

After we submitted our application to YC, one portion of our application included a reference to an old site that has never had one user sign up. Now the site has multiple "spam" user signups within 12 hours of application submission.Any ideas or is this part of the "test"?

I would agree - "Do not let YC's rejection/acceptance dictate your path." I am only applying once. This session.
Re:Poll: Did you apply to YC for S11? on Sunday March 20, 2011 @10:33AM (#2346342)
Yes.
