I use this with the Google Analytics Sheets plug-in to build full-funnel views that update automatically (well, the GA plugin updates when I run it, but that's so simple it might as well be auto)

Thanks. Been doing a bit of that... just need to dedicate more time to it.

Ask HN: How old is too old to pivot?

I've always felt like a programmer trapped in a businessman's body. How old do you find/feel is too old to jump into coding (which I've dabbled in since roughly 2000), maybe take a code bootcamp (that particular Ask HN inspired this) and try to transition to full-on developer?

Re:My Gmail Account Hacked. How do I secure it? on Friday January 31, 2014 @11:42AM (#7157504)
Same as everyone, 2-step verification. You can get the authenticator app for your phone or just get the authentication code by text message. Even if they get your password somehow, unless they've also stolen your phone and you don't have a lock screen the PW is borderline useless.
There's also Stackdriver (full disclosure, I work at Stackdriver)

Interesting question/observation. Has your usage evolved along similar lines? Has it been a linear evolution, or have you found particular break points along the way?

Same reason you give trophies to Little League participants - to provide context for the competition. To add something fun that hopefully underscores what is effectively a networking/show-off event.
The term is "cultural fit"

I don't disagree, it's just been a change in my own perspective of late... kind of like when you stop believing in magic and start understanding the reactions of a variety of elements. It starts to seem so... straightforward. Puts discovery into perspective.

Sounds Pratchett-esque to me...
Engage the folks there in person - look them in the eye (as many different people as you can).

Try to generate some interaction - ask questions, preferably ones that can be answered with a show of hands.

Breathe.

Know your material, but don't try to memorize it. Work it like a TV sports anchor - know what's going on and the details and ad-lib the specifics.

Smile and seem/be genuinely happy to be sharing this information with your audience. Wanting to be there is obvious, and so is not wanting to be there.

Re:As a Democrat, I am disgusted with President Obama on Friday August 23, 2013 @02:50PM (#6265545)
This is why I'm done with the two-party system. Both parties are the same; the only difference is where they stand on (largely) irrelevant hot-button issues.

Obama bothers me most of all because Candidate Obama was exactly what I wanted. Transparent. Forward-thinking. Respectful of individual rights. Willing to dismantle systems that denied rights to perceived enemies, both foreign and domestic.

And then this fellow who looked and sounded like Candidate Obama started in as President of the United States, and we found exactly where the buck stops - not with the supposed head of the free world, but with the practically invisible collection of people and corporations that work behind the scenes to operate the puppets we vote for.

It's sad. It's also not new. What is new, however, is our ability to communicate via non-centralized channels. It allows us to know that the wool is being pulled over our eyes and, with any luck, start more and more to pull it away.

Not necessarily even the shoulders of giants (with all due respect to Newton), but on the shoulders of normal, inquisitive men and women who are standing on the shoulders of countless other normal men and women.

It's turtles all the way down.

It's all about documentation. Documents destroyed in a "dark age" of some sort? Start from scratch, hope the branches of discovery lead to the same conclusion at some point.

Part of me immediately scoffs at the definition of "nanotechnology" assumed by the article, but this plays to something that's been bothering me of late - to what degree does humanity actually innovate/invent, vs. rubbing things together and seeing what happens?

Cooking: I put this plant in and set fire under it and it tastes good.

Chemistry: I put these two substances together and they explode.

Nanotechnology*: I put tiny ground-up bits of gold in this and it turns red.

This may be waaaaay side-tracking, but at what point do we step back and realize that everything we do consists of just... writing down what happens with different combinations of things? And today's nanotechnology is just the result of tons upon tons of writing down things like the linked article's results and then adding whatever the next logical(?) step might be?

(Makes me think the Asheron's Call spell research back in the day captured all of human ingenuity boiled down)
