Ask HN: Best API to check for scam/phishing/spam domains?

I'm building an app where the user has to input a domain as part of one of our user flows. For safety/security reasons, I want to integrate with an API that can check if the domain that the user has input is scammy, spammy, or contains other malicious content. I was looking into Scamadviser (https://www.scamadviser.com/scamadviser-api), but does anyone have recommendations for any other...

According to the source article in Wikipedia: "“We had very limited money,” Lili Khosrowshahi recalled of the family’s early days in the U.S. “I’d never worked before. I started working full-time, and every penny we earned was put in Dara [and two other son’s] education… and it was expensive. I remember at the time coffee was $0.15 [a cup], and I wouldn’t buy a cup of coffee for myself.”"

He also has a cousin who is the SVP of Engineering at Slack!

I got pretty excited about trying this out, since I've been using a no longer maintained (and pretty buggy) app called Sequel Pro.

But, Beekeeper kind of seems slow/clunky? I ran a simple query in our prod DB that returned 906 rows x 60 columns – the app completely froze up and I couldn't even scroll down to the next few rows...

You would be hard-pressed to find a list anywhere. That being said, MoPub is a significant player in the AdTech market – you'll most likely find that they're integrated with most major apps that have in-app advertising. The only foolproof way is to really delete any apps that serve you ads.
It's essentially a web app/UI that allows advertisers to actually set up their advertising campaigns that run on devices.

DSPs are integrated with a host of a data providers and exchanges that give advertisers the ability to target people based on location, demographics, what articles they're reading, etc.

Great points! What would you do in situations where your engineers aren't all that interested in customer conversations?

In the past, I've tried to bring in our engineers to user interview/feedback sessions or customer meetings, but most of them didn't seem that interested in coming again.

I used to work with a lot of SaaS companies at my previous consulting company, these are the most common tools I saw:

- Sales: Salesforce, Gong.io, Intercom, Outreach, Highspot

- Product Development: Github, Jira, Pendo or Heap, Sketch, InVision

- HR: BambooHR, Lever

- Other: G Suite, Slack

That being said, this is what's the most common, not what's the best that's available. There's plenty of other SaaS products that might be better for your company and use cases!

Ask HN: As a Product Manager, what can I do to make my engineers' lives easier?

As a PM, I believe that one of the things that I should focus on making my engineers’ lives easier. I care deeply about our engineers not having a shitty experience with me as the PM on the project. For example:- I never set meeting times with my engineers that will interrupt their working flow (I love PG’s “Maker’s Schedule, Manager’s Schedule” essay)- I always try to clearly explain the “why”...

Looks like it hasn't changed much... which is a good thing!

Would highly recommend checking out `The Undoing Project` by Michael Lewis. It's a biography (of sorts) about Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman that has excellent stories about their fruitful collaboration in behavioral economics.
BTW, I didn't make this - I thought it was a really cool tool and wanted to share it.

Credit for this tool goes to Rafael Camargo:

Re:Bill Gates Breaks Down 6 Moments from His Life on Monday October 22, 2018 @05:27PM (#18278691)
It's interesting (and good) to see how Gates has mellowed as he ages. He now comes off as this affable, well-read, and geeky senior citizen.

I find it hard to reconcile that image with stories of him in the early days of Microsoft, where others described him as hyper-competitive, intense, and a bully. I wonder if he regrets how he behaved during his earlier periods.

As someone who is not a particularly big fan of Steam's platform, more competition in this space is a good thing.
Would definitely suggest checking out these series of videos from a16z: https://a16z.com/2018/09/02/sales-startups-technical-founder...

They're bite-sized sales videos from a partner over there, I found a lot of value out of them.

For a sales strategy and organizational perspective, "Predictable Revenue" is a useful book.

The hardest thing for me to get right was empathizing with my prospects and their challenges. Putting yourselves into their day-to-day problems can be incredibly difficult to do correctly, but improving that skill really helped me in all aspects of the sales process.

Re:How to evaluate the company culture before joining? on Friday October 05, 2018 @05:30PM (#18151897)
If it's a small enough company, I would definitely suggest interviewing the founders from the perspective of an investor. Your line of questioning should be focused on asking them/yourself, "why should I invest my time in your company?"

This should raise all sorts of questions like, what's the value-prop of your product/service, what's your go-to-market plan, what is your experience building and scaling companies, etc.

If you can't personally be interested in the company after speaking to the founders - I think it's likely that it won't be of much interest to you.

Re:Ask HN: Why Does Hacker News pay for Google Ads? on Friday October 05, 2018 @05:24PM (#18151853)
Is it possible that some 3rd party unrelated to HN or YC is running these ads? Weird...
Re:How Our Marketing Team Spends Money Each Month on Friday October 05, 2018 @05:12PM (#18151791)
May not be necessary for their kind of product and market. Looking at their company page, there doesn't seem to any salespeople at the company.

Would suggest that you check out Patrick McKenzie's post about SaaS companies. Buffer fits the 'Low-touch SaaS' description pretty squarely - which would mean that they don't necessarily require a dedicates sales unit.
