It would be nice to get something modern to replace what people used to do with FileMaker. This may be it.
If you divide the U.S. Annual Budget by the population you get about $4,000 person.

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=U.S.+Population+%2F+U.S...

This means that every American who doesn't pay at least $4,000 in Federal Income Taxes is receiving money from the Government.

Thank you! All these Mac people think Apple Invented Everything.
Re:This 10 year old designed and built a Nixie-tube clock on Thursday November 26, 2015 @11:22PM (#10635840)
This is a great project. He had some help from Dad with the power tools, but it seems that he wrote the software completely by himself.
Re:Raspberry Pi Zero: the $5 computer on Thursday November 26, 2015 @10:16AM (#10633251)
I have no idea why Arduino is so popular--it has NO debugging support unless you use an ICE. (People "debug" with printf statements.) We use Netduinos because with .NET we can single step and inspect variables in live code.

Weather resistant building design, for example, concrete dome construction.
Good for you! Many other people wouldn't want to be bothered by them. And since you're so sure it will go up from ~350 to 1000 soon, you shouldn't be wasting time here! You should be taking every penny you can get and buying bitcoins!
I can get the same "privacy" and not be subject to arbitrary Bitcoin/Dollar price fluctuations by simply buying Visa debit "gift cards" for cash.

There are power plugs on all the Trans-Pacific United flights I fly. What airline are you using?
Re:A Step Toward Protecting Fair Use on YouTube on Thursday November 19, 2015 @03:34PM (#10597424)
I just wish they'd help me when there's no copyright infringement at all, so there's no need for a "fair use" argument--but I still get an infringement notice.

This happens, for example, if I sit down at my own piano and record myself playing some unambiguously out-of-copyright work, for example Mozart, Chopin, or Bach.

Just last week I got a notice from a record label because their matching software identified a Beethoven piano piece as being that from one of their copyrighted recordings. It wasn't--it was me playing.

Google should stop allowing companies that do this access to their content match system.

If they're blocking ports, they're not selling "Internet." They're selling something else.

I would hope that someone with the resources and knowledge to make them pay for these shenanigans will....

I strongly disagree with you. Obesity is not Wal*Mart's fault. Eating too many calories is.

2. Pears in pear juice (no other sweeter). WalMart's own brand: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-Fruit-Pear-Halves-Bart...

3. Organic sprouted whole wheat bread: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Alvarado-St.-Bakery-Sprouted-Whole... (All bread needs some "sugar" for the yeast to work on. Some that say "sugar free" get sugar from milk or fruit juice.)

Re:Stop Scaring Your Cats with Cucumbers on Wednesday November 18, 2015 @04:51PM (#10591026)
These owners in some of the videos will regret scaring their cats near their litterboxes, if the cat becomes afraid of the area.

(I have no rules for my indoor cats because I don't want them to become neurotic. I don't try to "train" them off of countertops, etc.)

Re:Visual Studio Code is now open source on Wednesday November 18, 2015 @01:15PM (#10589592)
Are you seriously comparing Eclipse to Visual Studio? I use both of them. Eclipse for CUDA programming, Visual Studio for everything else. There's no comparison. Eclipse is a buggy heap of crud. Visual Studio just works.
Re:Ask HN: What's your opinion on the new TLDs? on Tuesday November 17, 2015 @08:55PM (#10585415)
I think the war's over and .com won. These new TLDs will always make a company seem sketchy (with some exceptions for companies that have mostly an app presence, or for certain tech segments.)
Nobody with a "weight problem" eats fewer calories each day than their body burns. Nobody.
Eating fewer calories than your body needs every day will always lead to weight loss. Certainly it's easier if you rearrange your diet, but that's a secondary point.
300,000 people die every year from Obesity. It's our #1 killer. And it can be solved by eating less.

See this study in the NEJM:

http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199212313272701

Discrepancy between Self-Reported and Actual Caloric Intake and Exercise in Obese Subjects

Of all the "diet resistant" subjects studied, ALL of them (100%) were grossly underreporting actual calories consumed and overexerting physical activity. Some of the people in this study were on medication because doctors had believed their self-reported numbers and believed they may have had thyroid or other metabolic problems.

Remember that "bariatric surgery" is just a way to get people to eat less by making it physically impossible to overeat. (Of course, people still manage.)

The HAES people don't seem to have a lot of respect for people at normal sizes. It's less "Healthy At Every Size" and more "Healthy at MY Size".
Re:Use micromorts to fight terrorism on Tuesday November 17, 2015 @09:45AM (#10581316)
People really didn't like my Obesity comment! The number one killer has a "personal responsibility" component and the techno-libertarians here object. Go figure... We live in an upside-down world where good is bad and right is wrong.
Re:Use micromorts to fight terrorism on Monday November 16, 2015 @11:54PM (#10579244)
Ok then! Why aren't we terrified about obesity, which is the leading cause of death in the United States, killing over 300,000 people a year. (See https://www.wvdhhr.org/bph/oehp/obesity/mortality.htm)
Re:Linux has matured into a robust desktop operating system on Monday November 16, 2015 @09:10AM (#10574468)
Windows hasn't changed? He need to look at Windows 10! We love it here, and we all used to run Macs and OS X.

We develop for Linux, in a virtualbox.
