I think we're showing our evolutionary background, in particular greed. Having our monetary system essentially controlled by powerful private interests is a disaster too.
> What has bothered me lately, very much so, is how in-the-minority I feel about this "social crisis" that I feel is occurring: hurting people/ourselves in pursuit of money that we won't personally even see. (In-the-minority from the people that surround me in my work and personal life.)
A key point I think. I'm not sure it is a minority feeling, but more a case of active propoganda/cultural influence that keeps 80-90% of people complacent ("We're the good guys! This doesn't feel right, but they just told us we're the good guys! Keep working!").
I agree it's catalog is rubbish, but in Australia there are a great many Bollywood, Nollywood and various other International films influxing lately.
Can't imagine what a mess all this licensing etc is. Such a non-productive waste of time.
I was pleasantly surprised my place had FTTN (100/50 I think I can get if needed). Absolute boondocks of Tassie, mostly agricultural/tradesfolk I'd guess. Seems odd but I'm glad they did.
I agree (and probably made it on to a list or two). Our government agencies don't even need a warrant to see our call/web/email metadata now. Even the RSPCA can access it.
I just don't understand this, even if students were asking for it. It's a poor language whipped up in a week or two - is it really what you want to base someone's first exposure to programming on?
Make do, not due, in this instance.
Why on earth?? I don't get why the engine would be executing JavaScript, even if it were sandboxed, in the first place? That doesn't sound sensible.
Save the Berenstein Bears!
There doesn't seem to be a lot of critical thinking done by developers at times.
They'll read a blog post, echo chamber the benefits over some kale juice and start hacking away.

As IT people, I thought I'd like to ask other IT people what they think about the current state of play. VC's can go back to their yachts and paid whores.Have we, as developers, sysadmins, IT people in general, been co-opted into an advertising scheme? Why does Google produce so much pure revenue? Is constant growth OK on a finite planet? Who started this?
Oh I have to get this off my chest. So many companies saying "Yes, we're sort of agile, but we have a fairly bureaucratic structure that is unamenable to change".
If you're not agile, stop lying about it. I saw a job on Seek the other day advertising a DevOps roles - turns out they want a helpdesk operator. Stop lying in job ads, and stop drinking the kool aid.
None of it helps.
These scumbags are actively ruining computing. Cars, bridges, infrastructure... can't these warhawks pick on something else?
Then you get the NSA, the ASD, the rest of the clowns coming in and ruining it, and what is the point? Are we all just fighting each other in an ape war?
I thought we were better.
The final straw for me was an outsourced dev asking me about time estimates for an agile project that other developers had estimated for.
"How much time will this take?" (Very demanding Asian boss in Australia Post)
"No idea, might be quick, might be complex, I don't know your environment."
"Well, developers have said 8 points. How much time is that??"
"I don't know".
His response: "Stay behind after the meeting, I need to talk to you about respect for authority".
Fun times.
That's talking about me in my younger days. Everything looks exciting, until you realize it's all patterns that have been done before.
If that was a known upvote for my poor code, the pain you are in right now is my revenge.
To be fair, the original post is coming from an AdmiralAsshat.
What can anyone do? This corporate free-for-all seems like it's established (de-facto) in the United States, and all countries must bow to the US because of their military might.
We pollute, consume, lie, steal and cheat each other like it's normal practice. Where did we go wrong.
Ah geez. Time to create a competent chip manufacturer. Anyone got a spare US sized military budget?
Felt like an ad too to make it worse.

I am personally of the opinion we cannot trust corporations to look after our best interests as a species. They will look after a handful of people to excess, but abuse the rest of the population for profit. That said, is there any path forward for open source/free:* CPUs
* Motherboard BIOS/CMOS
* Firmware in proprietary devicesThoughts? Am I the only one getting a bit peeved with wealthy corps...
I think the problem is, it's very configurable. To the point, some towered architect somewhere can make those decisions for you, about how you want to work, in your absence.
Out of the box, I'm not sure, I don't think I've ever seen it. If what I've seen is out-of-the-box, it's awful.
Personally never tried it, but after Microsoft SourceSafe, it'll take a few centuries to ever use their products again.
Yep, you get a developer invested in something, they'll swear black and blue it's the best thing since sliced bread. Till you explain it to them.
I was hoping Gitlab filled this space. I keep hoping someone else will fill this space without doing any work. Time to dust off the open source hands! anyone that knows my code shudders in anticipation
None. I think like everything IBM, Microsoft, and now Atlassian, no-one ever lost their job by using Jira.
i.e. the masses have formed an opinion, Jira won't get you fired. Something else will, so if in doubt, use Jira.
Lot of people in doubt out there.
When all you have to do is hold meetings and decide these issues, that's all you can do :)
We're a foolish species most of the time.
Thanks for that. The more you open up nature, the more it seems like a computer to me. An incredible amount of mystery to be found there.
Sorry for not linking it, was in a rush.
I think we need to remove the word 'conspiracy' from the English language, it's been abused too well by propaganda.
I thought I might be safe with an APU-2 device as a firewall (AMD chip, don't know if they have the same arrangement with the five-eyes), but Intel NICs.
Guess the motto is, use paper and lead pencils for anything really important. And turn wifi off.
