Re:Donating 8 hours design time to any project on Thursday June 16, 2011 @11:34PM (#2664223)
For anyone thats interested, I decided to donate time to Open Home Pro. Here's a quick outline of what I looked at:

- Quick logo design and colour palette to establish a more credible brand - Added related illustration to help sell the idea - Moved the call to action up and made it more visible (download button) - Restructured the content so the user understands why the app could be use before diving into more detail with the video

You can find the mockup here: http://www.jasonstrachan.com/clients/openhomepro/

Thanks, Jason

Thanks everyone for the interest, I have narrowed it down to two and emailed you both.

Chances are I'll be doing this again in a month or two so lookout for that if you still need a hand.

Cheers, Jason

The freelance design business is great right now, sometimes I get work on interesting projects, but rarely in the startup world. Thats probably the most interesting space to be doing UX right now hence the post.

I have also done this before for Simple Invoices: http://www.jasonstrachan.com/?p=290

Help me fix photo sharing

One the one side you have flickr who has the most amazing community but a product that has stagnated. On the other you have instagram who has had explosive growth using new social mechanics like follow. I think there is an opportunity to build a community aimed squarely at flickr, but using new mechanics. Something like twitter for images. For a taste of what it looks like this is one of the...

Looking for some help

We are looking for some help building the next generation of photo sharing. For a taste of what it looks like this is one of the screens - http://jasonstrachan.com/clients/shoebox/SB_05.jpgWhat is it? It's twitter for images, its flickr re-imagined, its instagram for the web... but its really something quite new and not comparable to what's out there already. I am a photographer who has been...

Re:List Gorilla: Our project over the last few months on Thursday October 21, 2010 @09:39AM (#1815297)
Getting great content that is a true refection of sentiment is going to be a challenge. We do have a few ideas on how to make it tough to game, but I'm quite happy to have that problem.

Thanks for the feedback.

And strangely enough if you have a feature request you can add it to the list here:

Re:List Gorilla: Our project over the last few months on Thursday October 21, 2010 @08:28AM (#1815125)
Glad you liked it.

Mobile is an interesting space for this content type. I can imagine a user getting relevant lists depending on their location. Actually location and localised content is going to be a big challenge for us - we can see patterns developing where users are creating lots of location specific content that may not be relevant to you.

Re:List Gorilla: Our project over the last few months on Thursday October 21, 2010 @08:23AM (#1815110)
Fair enough. That is one of the things we plan on doing soon enough, we have a list of features to get through but it will get ticked off at some point.

Thanks for the feedback.

www.listgorilla.com

What is it? List Gorilla is a place to find and create lists of all the things you care about. The items in each list are sorted and curated by you and the community. Whether you are into food, science, cinema or something more obscure, make a list about whatever interests you and watch how it evolves.

Feedback Any feedback on the idea, execution and performance is much appreciated. We have some ideas about where we would like to take this idea but I'm also very curious to hear yours. You can also email me directly at [email protected]

Thanks, Jason

Oh and a little help: why is it I can't post linkable URL's? Do I need more karma?

Not a problem, I will send along the assets you need in a little.

Show HN: The result of donating 8 hours design time

Early this week I offered to donate 8 hours to any project that needed some design help. There were a few candidates and thanks to everyone that emailed me and posted in the comments. I decided to lend my time to Simple Invoices, an open source invoicing system. You can see the result here: http://jasonstrachan.com/clients/simpleinvoices/And the original site...

Anyone else? I'll pick a project in the next few hours...
Re:Donating 8 hours design time to any project on Monday March 15, 2010 @09:30PM (#1194657)
I agree, you have some of the most important things right. It communicates very efficiently and probably works well for your market. One thing to be careful about is it does look very generic, that makes you less memorable.

Donating 8 hours design time to any project

I have a free day tomorrow that I would like to donate to any project. What I can do for you in 8 hours?- Look at how your content is structured and figure out the best way to communicate your idea - Working on the user experience and the mechanics of the idea - Take a look at you branding (fonts, colours, logo etc) - Make broader recommendations that might make the idea more...

Re:News is so broken on Thursday March 11, 2010 @07:26PM (#1185418)
That's a big part of it, but the piece that's missing is seeding news stories as they break.
Re:News is so broken on Thursday March 11, 2010 @07:25PM (#1185411)
Curating content in one place is going to be compelling, that's definably going to be a big part of this. Conceptually that's a big change from traditional news where a journalist publishes a piece and ends the conversation while things are still unfolding. Its the equivalent to walking out the room while you are in the middle of a conversation with someone.
Re:News is so broken on Thursday March 11, 2010 @07:11PM (#1185377)
When I say we will compete with NYT/CNN I mean that those are the users we hope to attract, I am not saying we will use that model. User generated content and content aggregation both need to be there to make a compelling experience.

I don't want to replicate anything that has been done previously, I think we are all trying to figure this out and its going to be an interesting ride.

And thanks for the insightful comments, there are some really smart motivated people here.

Re:News is so broken on Thursday March 11, 2010 @08:21AM (#1183639)
I can imagine when I talk about this stuff you are thinking digg, reddit etc. But its quite different to that.

The biggest difference is this is a competitor to traditional news (New York Times, CNN) and not digg and reddit.

I believe we are going to share some of the mechanics that drive digg, but where this is very different is when you view story it is not a link to someone else's content - the content lives within the context of the site.

Also I will say that the idea is not fully formed yet and needs some more thought. The biggest problem is how the content gets curated and how it gets seeded.

Find someone that cares about UX... and actually knows what that is. Its also important to for the designer to understand what it is you are tying to communicate and what the mechanics of the idea are. What is it that makes users come back? Who are you focussing on?

I guess I am not really answering you question :) But I find crowd sourced design very hit and miss. You don't get any real thinking, you also don't get any solid UE stuff... and that's where it counts. let me know if you need a hand. [email protected]

News is so broken

Looking for a developer to join me on my mission to fix news!News seems to be broken and I want to try and fix that. I want to create a place that offers a simple way to follow and find the stuff that you care about, presented in a way that is easy to scan and consume. The second part of this idea is I want to build discussion around news items, as a story unfolds it gets more context and is...

Re:Fire the “web designer” on Saturday March 06, 2010 @08:54AM (#1171527)
This is nonsense. Everyone building product should have some degree of understanding of UX. And its absolutely crucial that the designer understands all the complexities of UX. Great design is required to take this into account, as a designer there is no way you can ever separate the two.

There are many average designers who do not understand interaction design, but there are zero amazing web designers who dont care about UX.
