You can't really assume the prices will stay low forever and removing local competition exposes you to supply chain issues.
Re:Wimpy vs. McDonald's: The Battle of the Burgers on Saturday September 13, 2025 @05:01PM (#45235271)
I remember Wimpy from my school days. I have never, and probably will never, eat anything as monstrous as Wimpy's Bender in a bun with cheese.

I'm fascinated by what prompts lead to 'Please try a different prompt.'

New Zealand or Australia lead to the aforementioned error, but The Antipodes generates a set. I thought individual countries had been banned for possibly generating offensive content but it works for Great Britain.

His recent announcement to bring in a policy to make former Prime Ministers do National Service really did bring tears of laughter to my eyes.
Re:Ask HN: What's your oldest piece of electrical equipment? on Saturday January 27, 2024 @11:45AM (#39157069)
I didn't think anyone would have a toaster as old as mine, I might take mine with me just for preservation.

Ask HN: What's your oldest piece of electrical equipment?

There's a strong possibility I'll be moving from the UK to North America this year. I've found myself looking at all my "stuff" and thinking about what's actually worth taking with us. It's only now that I've noticed my TV is from 2008, my toaster from 2000 and my SNES from 1994!I still use these things frequently, even daily in the case of the toaster (my wife doesn't like it though, it...

Re:Ask HN: WFH vs. RTO Productivity Data? on Wednesday August 09, 2023 @07:38PM (#37069876)
I found the abstract of this article to be quite interesting[0] and reflects my own experience of WFH. Pre-pandemic I was always in an office and now I'm always at home, I definitely have a longer work day now because there's more distractions.

Re:What if regular exercise is the best cognitive exercise? on Saturday November 12, 2022 @11:53AM (#33574780)
I agree with this. I hate exercise so I go into the office a few days a week and I cycle to get there and back which is roughly 10 miles in total. Without that commute I'd be too tempted to do nothing by way of exercise.

Thanks! I hadn't heard of that show before, having watched the first episode you can tell it's from the era of Tomorrows World and the legendary Johnny Ball!
I work in London, UK. The distrust levels in the company I work in are difficult to gauge as I'm contracted out to a client site. From what I hear other contractors in the client site the level of distrust is simply down to pay. The parent companies that have contractors onsite rarely offered a rise that matched inflation even when inflation was <3% let alone now when it's >10%. I've even seen employees of one parent company move to another for a five figure pay rise and end up in the same building doing an almost identical job.

> I've always perceived opinions on HN regarding work as being of the 'take the money and run' variety, switching jobs as fast as possible and generally having no loyalty in the company

This is not a fair picture to paint of people who job hop. I've never been in the same role for more than three years but that's less about loyalty/money and more about my desire to learn new things at a pace faster than the companies move.

I'm not on Twitter and yet I'm probably aware of far-right commentary on the platform. I can't say I'm aware of any "far left extremists" as you call them. Who are the "far left extremists" that you mention? Isn't there more attention to far-right Twitter accounts due to the increase in violence taking place in the name of far-right politics?
Re:The SAFe Delusion on Saturday October 29, 2022 @02:50PM (#33386877)
I'm currently a year into a role as Lead SRE in team working in SAFe. We plan five 2 week sprints for which we immediately write off 50% of our time as "BAU activities" and the rest of our time is spent lurching from one deliverable to another in the hope we actually achieve something before we get "re-prioritised" yet another time. It's not even SRE, it's 2nd line support and platform engineering. I really have no idea how SAFe works or how it's meant to work, but everyone seems happy so long as I complete my JIRA tickets on time because that's what the users want.

Tim Berners-Lee's startup Inrupt [0] is essentially trying to partner with companies to sell an enterprise version of the Solid Project software. Their website suggests they've partnered with some large-ish companies already[1]. I could see a webpage prompting you for a release of your certain parts of your 'pod' rather than use cookies perhaps.

In the DevOps/OnCall role you have to be prepared to deal with "all kinds of software bugs and hardware deviations on a daily basis" which doesn't sound like a barrel of laughs.
Re:The crypto plan to save our souls on Friday June 03, 2022 @05:47AM (#31606230)
I thought this was satire at first pass.

“I don’t expect most people will buy into our long-range vision,” Weyl said. “We need to give people breadcrumbs to follow."

Just so long as those breadcrumbs lead to a place where accountability still exists. I'm still yet to read any "Web3" idea that includes a scenario of who is responsible when something goes wrong.

Re:Britain should scrap its online safety bill on Sunday May 29, 2022 @05:10AM (#31547678)
Until a major party comes out with a manifesto pledge to offer a public vote on moving to Proportional Representation I'm not sure why anyone would bother voting Conservative or Labour anymore.
Re:Narcissism is rampant, so how do we address it? on Thursday May 19, 2022 @05:36PM (#31440493)
"Unfortunately, there is no cure for narcissism"

I can't imagine this will ever change. How do you encourage someone who seeks the admiration of others at all costs to simply stop? Without a shred of evidence, I'm sure the increased use of social media is at least partially to blame.

Re:A Guide to the Fire Movement on Friday May 13, 2022 @08:34AM (#31366731)
I read a few blog posts about FIRE and they seemed to promote spending less now so you can work less in the future. That's fine, but there rarely seems to be mention of risks with moving to a fixed income.
I only recently heard of this idea at the AWS Summit when talking to a rep of one of your competitors (Zesty), they have a minimum spend of $7k. Your pricing page says there's no conditions, so I assume you don't have minimum spend requirement, is that correct?
Re:Still-active phreak numbers, all safe and free on Saturday February 12, 2022 @05:10PM (#30317007)
I always enjoy reading about this kind of stuff even though a lot of is only applicable in the US. On UK landlines you can dial 17070 to access BT line test functions. When you dial a very well spoken voice reads your phone number back to you. It's rarely been useful to me but I did once astonish someone by using it, they were convinced it was meant to be a secret number and that I was probably breaking the law!
Having just taken a job as a l Lead SRE in a large consultancy despite not being skilled or experienced enough I'm terrified that I'll struggle to move to a new org solely because of my job title. It's jarring how much of an impact it has made on me and I don't really know what to do about it. I'm aware that it's only really a problem when I move but I don't think the work and tech I'll be exposed to will help me reach a level where I'll be confident.
Re:Christopher Walken on Acting Like Christopher Walken on Tuesday February 08, 2022 @06:36PM (#30266429)
"I've always resented punctuation" is a quote I can only read in the voice of Walken.
