Re:Show HN: VeilStream – prod-like data without the PII on Wednesday June 18, 2025 @10:26AM (#44310202)
This looks awesome! A couple questions though:

How do you handle connection pooling? Does this interfere with pgbouncer or similar tools?

Also, does this work with all PostgreSQL extensions (PostGIS, timescaledb, etc.)?

Re:Ask HN: Best resources on starting a lifestyle business? on Sunday February 18, 2024 @10:09PM (#39425883)
I don't know if its been mentioned already, but I thought the minimalist entrepreneur by Sahil Lavinga (gumroad founder) was good.
I think that certainly makes it harder. Never been to Detroit. Probably still more economic activity there than there was 200 years ago.
If you dramatically reduce taxes to labour and capital, it quickly becomes a very attractive place to move your business or earn an income. And that's the start of a development flywheel. Instead of taxing productivity, land taxes reabsorb the value generated by the community (positive externalities), which would otherwise flow into the pocket of the guy who owns a parcel of land in proximity to the public good. You then use these tax revenues to produce more public goods, which benefit everyone, and then suck up the value that accrues to the land. rinse and repeat.

I highly recommend grabbing a copy of land is a big deal. https://www.amazon.ca/Land-Big-Deal-wages-about-ebook/dp/B0B...

This is well worth a read, as is the Progress and Poverty substack if you're curious about the subject.

Re:Tell HN: Copying and pasting from ChatGPT unsolicited sucks on Wednesday December 07, 2022 @04:03AM (#33892218)
I saw a tweet today saying that using ChatGPT as a search engine is epistemological equivalent of consuming food as a human centipede.

Ask HN: Design principles for designing design tools like Figma, Photoshop etc.?

I've got a contract to design some interface concepts for a studio/editor type product. There are lots of products that fall into this category so I'm assuming someone must have written on the topic. Unfortunately, it's proving to be a difficult thing to google. Any recommendations? This is the only thing I've come across so far from Stas Aki at Readymag:...

Re:UST Stablecoin Loses Dollar Peg on Monday May 09, 2022 @11:46PM (#31323215)
Multi-coin stablecoins like UST are usually structured to make money for a third party. For some, additional usage of the primary coin drives the appreciation of the secondary coin. If they are built to incentivize adoption, you can guarantee nobody will pay too close attention to whether or not the match checks out.

We desperately need to support collateralized stablecoins like USDC through clarifying regulation that standardizes reserve requirements and transparency. This would likely drive use away from algo coins and bring stability to so called stablecoins.

Crazy idea: an asset backed stablecoin that you can't redeem for dollars

Not saying wether this is a good idea or a bad idea. But 'burning' cash or deposits into a custodial non-lending account which is attested-to monthly to be holding 100% cash, and which you cannot withdraw from would represent the ultimate voluntary boat burning for those who are serious (and maybe stupid) about creating a money for the internet. Value is not 'locked' until there is no way out....

in the late 70s the politicians also blamed OPEC for inflation. which was also bullshit.
