Re:Nobel Lecture – Herbert Kroemer [pdf] on Tuesday January 21, 2025 @09:53AM (#42780743)
I took quantum physics with Prof. Kroemer. At the beginning it was standing room only with about 30 students. By the time finals came around there were six of us. Brutal. I've got some stories about that guy. RIP.
I don't quite understand the singling out of women. The men have been doing this too[0]. And Americans are committing crimes just so they can go to prison and get healthcare.

This may seem silly but step 0 of every alternative ROM install is always what? "Backup your phone." But they never tell the user how. If you're really going to target "non-tech savvy folk" you can't just leave important steps at "you figure it out."
Re:Majority of Americans now use ad blockers on Monday April 22, 2024 @01:33PM (#40116648)
Favorite part and best part. When the large majority of advertisers block advertisements there's really no room to complain when anyone else does the same.
You forgot "give customer a meaningful discount for doing the labor of checkout."
Re:RSS is cool Some RSS feed readers are not (yet) on Sunday April 14, 2024 @12:48PM (#40032443)
"[RSS is] an easy way for readers to quickly discover released and updated articles." This is true. And there's nothing in that statement about how frequently a site updates.

Telling sites to reduce the number of entries in a feed and telling users to decrease the refresh frequency is a bad idea for sites that update frequently. Very few self-hosted rss readers allow for per feed refresh rates (freshrss is the only one I've found that does I think) so to capture everything on sites that update frequently but have tiny feed sizes I have to run separate cronjobs. That's after asking them to increase the feed size.

Musk has repeatedly claimed he allows what the law allows. Well, court orders are legally binding which is why people can be found in contempt of court and jailed for violating them. That's the case in the US and I assume in Brasil as well otherwise orders would be meaningless. People like Musk believe they can pick and choose what laws and rules apply to them.

https://youtu.be/G2uN7cw-PaU?t=4333 Apparently the Scale people don't know how to do chapter marks on youtube.
They also don't set wages, prices in stores or prices at the pump yet they keep acting as if they do and people keep voting as if they do.
Re:America's Tipping Slowdown Isn't Slowing Down on Friday December 22, 2023 @10:41AM (#38735155)
Tipping (along with often poor service and exorbitant prices) is a big reason why I rarely eat out unless it's on someone else's dime. Cheaper, more educational and more rewarding to learn to prepare something at home.

"Masters chased black and native women"

Typical Economist.

I don't see how more people don't understand self-checkout to be the uncompensated labor that it is. You're not getting paid, you're not getting any discount (certainly nothing meaningful). It's jobs lost for your local community and pure profit filling the pockets of distant fat cats.
> longer jail for the same crime, higher rates of homelessness, higher rates of suicide, lower educational outcomes, shorter life spans, less friends on average, ...

And outcomes are worse for Black men in almost all categories and have been so for some time. Yet the response to negative outcomes for Black people is to blame "black culture." Yet there's no blaming of white culture. Instead this is a crisis we have to do something about. C.f. crack vs fentanyl epidemics.

Venn diagrams, how do they work?

Give some of that money to postgres.

These comments are suspiciously light on anti-cancel culture rants. Wonder why.
Re:Affirmative Action and the Elephant in the Room on Tuesday July 04, 2023 @02:02PM (#36590360)
Unedited title: "Affirmative Action and the Jewish Elephant in the Room"

I know anti-Blackness is de rigueur here on HN but surely the Jews will be spared?

Dwelling on the minutiae is necessary for those who espouse such beliefs as part of the process of (re)normalizing their views.
Given the Bulgarian heritage, I'd assume looming laws[0] were in fact a factor even if not mentioned.

Re:The People Who Still Love Renting DVDs from Netflix on Monday April 24, 2023 @09:51AM (#35687643)
Kind of annoying that they don't mention it isn't just dvd, it's also bluray. I doubt any streaming services streams at bluray quality.
> I've listened to a lot of his podcasts, I do not recall him mentioning MIT once.

He actually used to host his pod at MIT before he moved to Texas to be closer to his true loves, Joe and Elon. Haven't watched him in years since he moved away from tech and more into (mostly right wing) political guests but even then you could count on one hand the interviews he didn't mention Rogan or Musk.

Re:Ryuichi Sakamoto Has Died on Sunday April 02, 2023 @01:19PM (#35412823)
This is as surprising to me as it is sad. 2 of 3 YMO members now gone at 70 and 71 which seems very young given the renown of Japanese longevity. Anyway, Beauty is a favorite album from my childhood so probably time for a re-listen.
