Who do you socialise with in Europe?! I’m a dual national and regularly spend time in 3 European cities and 8+ US cities. To be honest, it’s the US that’s devoid of culture and European culture is very much there and deep rooted.
Re:Loneliness is a measure of self-understanding on Thursday January 19, 2023 @09:30AM (#34440622)
Making someone feel seen and heard is a skill…if one doesn’t have that in their family or friendship group then that is a real shame. I believe that nuance was missed in your analogy.
What drives it? Wealth retention to keep it in the family?
Where do you live? Country?
Yes but if you are management and you have been wanting to make changes and cut the fat, it was previously difficult to do layoffs without extensive negative coverage. Now you can do it and fly under the radar so it may be opportunistic in nature.
Re:Ask HN: How should we split up equity? on Sunday January 08, 2023 @01:27PM (#34301645)
You could try:

- You get back 10x on your initial investment ($1.5m) before anyone else gets paid when you sell the company. In the form of preferred shares.

- After that equity split 60/40 (i.e. you have 50% more equity)

>> “Comments by Home Depot Inc. co-founder Bernie Marcus that “nobody works, nobody gives a damn,””

Corporates have been squeezing employee who give a damn…with little in the way of pay rises. Corporate profits and stock prices have been off the charts while people struggle to look after their families if they can even afford to start one altogether!

Companies need to adapt and start actually rewarding hard work…and I don’t just mean giving out employee of the month awards..I mean cash money…

First company I worked for, I worked hard and was rated star of project out of 40 people…I was training people on a super technical project who had 10-15 years of more experience than me. I was client facing and traveling to sites in multiple countries. The company was hiring people for $8k more than my salary with similar experience to me (Java and security clearance). After 1.5 yrs had my first pay rise of $400 for the year…what a joke.

I received a job offer in finance and for almost double my salary….told my employer I was leaving. They asked what can we do to keep you and I said you can double my salary…and the project manager said yes..to be honest I didn’t believe them.

Since then I’ve gone on to work at different companies for good pay but little upside since the companies were not growing (often shrinking!). This makes it difficult to get promoted as quickly since the organisations are not growing so senior management ranks stagnant and no one leaves and new roles are not created. Right now there’s no incentive to me working hard…it won’t make a meaningful difference.

Re:8 Hard truths I learned when I got laid off from my SWE job on Wednesday December 28, 2022 @07:19PM (#34167857)
Doesn’t necessarily apply to every industry… sure to a growing sector like software then maybe yes. In other parts of the economy, teams can have fixed sizes and budgets. This means no wiggle room to bring in new people. I manage a team but can’t hire a new full time person right now…I would put resumes in a pile..
Re:Ask HN: What are your best and safest investment options? on Monday December 26, 2022 @05:58AM (#34136598)
Look at your pension….in the UK, if you’re in the 40% tax bracket and with the tax relief, you’ll get an instant return on your money of 67%…the downside is the lock in.
Re:A fake job offer gone wrong on Saturday December 10, 2022 @04:32AM (#33931257)
I read somewhere that some scammers do this deliberately to filter for easier targets.
More like 6 years is the standard US investment term on a 10 fund life with 2x 1-year extensions taking it to 12. Investment term can end early if they raise a new fund but need to be 70% invested and committed. Original comment…not entirely credible…tbh
Re:Ask HN: Why don’t governments target zero inflation? on Thursday December 01, 2022 @08:39AM (#33816050)
Because zero is too close to negative which freaks people out with bad headlines...
Please enlighten me and point to where in this article it makes it a women problem… feels like they are highlighting a men’s issue…

The article feel like it is trying to lay out facts relating to tradition while withholding opinion.

Seems to me there is a recurring problem where people overlay women’s rights on to everything… the world is multi dimensional and doesn’t singularly revolve around gender… this kind of thinking shuts down debate and ostracises potential participants. The formerly oppressed are becoming the oppressor..

I do not understand your response...not sure the article was insinuating any of the above...
Just get another job....poorly treated...unlikely to materially improve...

If you are a contractor, then you can decide your bill rate and hours. If you are asked to work extra say that you need to be compensated and if they have sign off for the expense. Then send a bill...part of the problem here is that you did not maintain good boundaries and asked to be respected and get paid.

I am middle management....a big part of my job is understanding my juniors needs and enabling them to do their jumps by promoting their cause with the leadership. Secondly I lead the hiring and ongoing training of staff...not sure how AI is going to do all this...
Re:Tell HN: Getting Ready for Unemployment on Friday October 14, 2022 @06:26AM (#33201681)
Instead of focusing 100% on yourself, you need to get out of your own head. Go help others. Volunteer. Use your time.
It isn’t that black and white…to look at it in that light is reductionist.

Further equality is good however it would be helpful to do so in a constructive manner.

What often happens is that SJWs just shut down debates and discussions.. because they disagree. This kills freedom of speech and ideas. This goes exactly to your last point. Are you threatened by others who disagree with you?

Re:Taking a Break on Friday September 30, 2022 @03:40AM (#33032098)
Yes some spiral in free fall into poverty…
This refers to defined benefit persons not defined contribution pension. These pensions were overly generous…
Yeah I see where you are coming from. I do not necessarily want us to be 100% consistent...just an honest conversation about how arbitary we are!!
Sexism and racism....are huge areas of concern...whereas tall men and good looking people are treated much better than short men and ugly people...our morality, in the West, is inconsistent and arbitary..

Re:Vladimir Putin’s situation looks ever more desperate on Thursday September 22, 2022 @08:49AM (#32938104)
Honestly I can say the same thing for anyone including Americans!!
Re:Vladimir Putin’s situation looks ever more desperate on Wednesday September 21, 2022 @02:53PM (#32929680)
It is probably because many disagree with you.. most countries want to be in NATO more than ever to group up against the Russian threat… highly doubt one would leave..on balance more will try to join than leave.

Russia is weakened and has lost support from previously neutral countries.

The US doesn’t need to fight Russia and China. Straw man argument… since that scenario is highly unlikely. In any case, it’s US & NATO allies versus who ever… the Chinese want to make money and become economically dominant…which doesn’t align well with war when you want to trade…

Your view is so upside down…I almost believe you are a Russian troll

Re:Don't compare yourself to other entrepreneurs on Tuesday September 13, 2022 @10:15AM (#32824568)
My view is that we are human and comparison is a subconscious activity like you said. I feel one can become aware of when one is comparing and walk back from it. Being pleased for others people success is helpful here.
Re:Ask HN: Pitfalls in jumping ship to a client company? on Tuesday September 06, 2022 @06:54AM (#32735348)
The two companies may have an mutual understanding whereby they do not take each others employees to maintain the peace. Even if not enforceable...it may create friction when trying to move over..
Re:Ask HN: Pitfalls in jumping ship to a client company? on Tuesday September 06, 2022 @04:38AM (#32734506)
Your client may have a contract with your employer which would stop them from hiring you. I would ask around. In any case, you could always apply and they say no. Nothing ventured...nothing gained.
