Re:Andrew Mason's $378.36 Retirement Package on Friday March 01, 2013 @11:36PM (#5308475)
$10.51, 6 times a month.

The number is probably the exact amount to cover taxes on some other benefit, after taking out taxes on the salary itself.

Can you elaborate on "the approach is fundamentally flawed"?

Don't we rely on a similar sort of sandboxing for Javascript in the browser?

How about not answering the phone unless you recognize the number?
Re:How To Handle Recruiter Calls on Wednesday February 27, 2013 @10:15PM (#5296749)
I haven't. It's a polite brush-off.

Politely inform them that you're not looking right now. Ask them to e-mail you a job description so that if you happen across anyone who meets the requirements, you can put them in touch.

There's no need to go nuclear on them. After all, they might be able to do you a favor one day.

Re:3D Printing Revolution: The Complex Reality on Thursday February 14, 2013 @10:37PM (#5224285)
You are very wise.

I want to do DMLS or another technology that will make metal parts.

I haven't heard from you guys in a while. Shoot me an e-mail.

I every conversation I've had lately when I tell people what I do, they mention 3D printing. I have to gently tell people that I don't do 3D printing yet as products generally fall into one of two categories: 1. Inexpensive and low quality. 2. Expensive and high quality.

My current plan is to go after market #2 in a year or two when I can raise the capital to get a really good machine.

I started with, and plan to continue, waterjet and laser cutting as the limitations of these technologies are easy for most designers to understand. What you enter as a CAD file is pretty much exactly what you get out as a final piece.

As an aside, it's amazing that using a robot to blast away raw material into a finished part using an ultra high pressure stream of water and garnet or a frikken laser beam is considered "traditional" machining.

I tend to pick the environment/framework/library that has the functionality already written that I happen to need at the time.
Re:The Future of Excel on Tuesday February 12, 2013 @09:47PM (#5211045)
As has been mentioned elsewhere, Excel users are programmers, whether they know it or not.

What they need is the discipline of software engineering, a completely separate discipline from programming. If Excel spreadsheets had better encapsulation, internal documentation, automated testing, and the like, the world would be a better place.

Thanks! I'll put these things on the to-do list.
I'm in Atlanta. Though this may be legit, it smells like a scam to me: "pay us money and we'll consider funding your business."

Since you're a blogger, you may be able to get a "press pass", though.

Review my website: Big Blue Saw

I've been working on this business for 4.5 years now, off and on with contract jobs.I'd really appreciate the trained eyes of HN taking a look at the website to tell me what they think: http://www.bigbluesaw.com/ . In particular, I want to make sure that the website is easy an pleasant to use, and that there are as few barriers as possible to ordering. Let me know what you think.
