Re:Ask HN: Can Someone Explain Syncing via iCloud? on Thursday August 29, 2024 @06:58PM (#41396220)
OP here, why not implement something like this https://github.com/anyproto/any-sync ?

Ask HN: Can Someone Explain Syncing via iCloud?

There is a to-do list app in the apple ecosystem called DoneIt. I really want to love this app, but it's plagued by several things. One of them being Sync. It's advertised as being private because it uses your own iCloud Drive as the database. However, it has atrocious syncing:1. Changes or additions get lost 2. Very slow for things to reflect 3. Just doesn't workI know iCloud isnt ideal. But...

Ask HN: Making Simple Apps Profitable?

I'm wonder whats the latest in revenue models for simple software apps and how to sell them?Let's say the app is a EXIF editor to process bulk images. It's a simple tool. How can one make money off of it?A subscription for such a simple tool doesn't make sense for it to be an ongoing cost.Donations are unreliable.Further upgrades/features to the app, is a possible one.One time purchases make the...

I had a look, but I want a GUI

Ask HN: A Finance Tracker

Im looking for a way to consolidate my finances. Something with small business support. GnuCash is ancient and is too technical for me. Firefly involves self-hosting which I don't want to deal with. Things like Quickbooks, are for small businesses, I want something more inclusive.I have CSV files that I want to import each month and have the software do some auto-categorisation.How do you track...

You want some sort of security. Plus, password generation features?

Ask HN: What do you think about a simple password manager?

Recently, I've been helping my parents, ages 50-60, with resetting their passwords as they constantly forget them. They used to have simple passwords, think (Apple1) until we had the 'talk', now they use more secure passwords but imo not good enough. They're reasonably tech literate, enough to know how to google, PowerPoint, Word, etc for their jobs, but anything beyond that it becomes a phone...

Ask HN: Setting up pricing for a complex product

I have product rendering agency business and want to refine my pricing strategy. On initial calls with possible clients the conversation goes like this: "I need renders for my product, how much will it cost?" "Well it depends on a lot of things; how many do you need? How complex is the product? Etc."I often stumble and have problems just throwing out a number because the price depends on a lot...

Ask HN: Trouble wrapping my head around business ideas

I got an ad for a Kickstarter campaign not too long ago, and I'm having trouble understanding the steps the founders went through to see this idea through to become a Kickstarter campaign. The product is called [Ringo](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ringobottle/ringo-the-water-bottle-that-magnetically-holds-your-phone?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=ringo). Essentially, it's a...

Ask HN: Finding a Business Mentor

Hey everyone!I'm a young product development engineer based in Melbourne, Australia, specializing in hardware. I've always been entrepreneurial and have lots of business ideas that could solve real problems. But the thing is: I tend to overthink my ideas and struggle to validate them in the market. So, I'm on the hunt for a business mentor or owner who can offer guidance and be a sounding...

Ask HN: How do manage your projects

I'm asking about non-work or business projects like, reorganise garage, setup home server, learn meditation, etc.Not necessarily breaking them down and actioning them. But how many at a time do you work on? How do you prioritise them? Do you use software?

Ask HN: Progressing on a Business Idea

Hi all,I'm a Product Developer (Hardware) and I need some advice on understanding and starting up. There's so much information and tips out there that I'm getting a bit overwhelmed. My idea: An entryway mirror that has a display and a UV camera built in. My concern is what kind of jobs want a generalist in 2 things? Software development isnt my passion per say, primarily because I like to work on physical things.
Re:Ask HN: I would like some career insight on Friday November 18, 2022 @05:53PM (#33663851)
Well said, thank you. I find it difficult to work on things that don't yield direct benefit ($ or productivity/convenience). And if work is just a means to make money, I'll quickly grow apathetic and depressed.

Any advice on this?

Re:Ask HN: I would like some career insight on Friday November 18, 2022 @05:48PM (#33663771)
I have been into embedded smarts as of late, as It does encompass a lot of things I'm into, thank you. Do you have any tips about getting into that industry without much experience?
Re:Ask HN: I would like some career insight on Friday November 18, 2022 @05:47PM (#33663737)
I may be open to moving. But Australia has jobs

Thank you

Re:Ask HN: I would like some career insight on Friday November 11, 2022 @05:27PM (#33567724)
It honestly varies so much depending on what type of software engineer. For a regular full stack developer with 7+ years, they can be looking at around $110,000. But take this with a huge grain of salt, as I'm not qualified to answer this question.

You can search on indeed and seek, and it'll give you a more accurate estimate.

Thank you, Rocket Lab doesn't have any opportunity in Australia.

Ask HN: I would like some career insight

Hey everyone, I am a fresh graduate from university at 24, living in Melbourne, Australia. I studied bachelor of Engineering, with a major of product design. Which tends to cause a lot of confusion, but it's essentially mechanical engineering and industrial design.During my study, I worked at a company in the power industry for 2 years, where I got to invent and design new products- which is...
